In Q3 2010 Fraser Offshore Limited fast-tracked the planning, procurement and project management of
rig-based abandonments for two subsea wells in the UK Southern North Sea. Utilising a standard jack-up
drilling unit, FOL provided onshore and offshore engineering and supervision teams to see the project
from planning through to execution and close-out.
The operations involved interfacing with in-situ subsea equipment and re-entering the two subsea wells
before cutting and pulling casing and setting permanent cement barriers to ensure well integrity in
compliance with regulatory guidelines and industry best practice.
Some challenges faced during the project included rig positioning in shipping lanes, fast tidal flows, trawl
damage to seabed hardware, use of dive teams in addition to ROVs and bespoke subsea interface
equipment. Both wells were safely and successfully abandoned.
