Box 510091 St. Louis MO 63151-0091 JUNE PROGRAM March 2015 Luncheon Notes By Pat Wiese David Berczek, Legislative Liaison for the NGA Office of Corporate Communications, will provide an update of the current status of plans for the new NGA West Campus at our June 24 meeting. Forty-six NGAA-West retirees and guests met at Pietro’s on Mar 25th for our 2015 spring gathering. Jim Mohan led us in the pledge of allegiance and Bob Eddy said the invocation. Construction of the new NGA West facility is deemed necessary to meet NGA's long-term requirements, its plans for the future and its best use of the agency's workforce and GEOINT technology to meet those demands. Ruth Walters, a retiree, and Deborah Pagenstecher, wife of retiree Stu, were introduced as first-timers. Tenor Jeffrey Gonder and Joe Tucci on the accordion entertained us after an enjoyable lunch. Current plans are for NGA to occupy the new facility in Fiscal Year 2022. The 50/50 winners were Dennis Terhaar, Ruth Walters (2), Pat Keller, Frank Aufmuth, Karen Anderson, Ron Ruffin, Libby Lanning, Clyde Creel (2), Jan Nugent, Don Smith and Carol Reed. Julia Collins, NGA West Public Affairs Officer, will also be our guest, discussing current plans for the next NGA West Alumni Day. NGA Honors Three New Inductees to the Geospatial Intelligence Hall of Fame NGAA West President’s Message By Marilyn Chryst Frank Aufmuth has agreed to be our Executive Vice President. Let’s welcome him to this leadership role. (But you won’t see Frank at the June meeting; he’s biking across the state of Missouri.) If you have any suggestions for luncheon entertainment, please contact Frank. I cannot stress enough that an organization like ours works because of the people who lead it. Recently we’ve seen, once again, how volcano eruptions and earthquakes can change the earth at any time. It makes me think of how all of you worked every day to keep our maps and guidance data current. You kept the products current as the world changed in both major and minor ways. You might have been a DMAAC’er, like me, or maybe you worked earlier at ACIC or later at NIMA. Remember, proudly, the work you have done, and that includes both the mapmakers and those whose jobs supported them; we did the mission together. Hold your head high, knowing your contribution made the world a better place. I’m proud to be part of this group. Dr. Robert Ballew, who played an integral part in the development of the Department of Defense's World Geodetic System, will be inducted into the Geospatial Intelligence Hall of Fame on May 27. NGA Director Robert Cardillo will honor the late Dr. Ballew along with two others in a ceremony at NGA Headquarters which will be televised to NGA locations world-wide. Going into the Hall of Fame along with Ballew will be the late Constance Babington Smith, a pioneer in the field of aircraft-based photographic interpretation, and Geoffrey H. Langsam, who helped develop and refine imagery analysis. Dr. Ballew's daughter Paula will accept on behalf of the Ballew family. The Geospatial Intelligence Hall of Fame, formerly known as the NGA Hall of Fame, was renamed to increase the award's scope and give better recognition to GEOINT tradecraft; The Geospatial Intelligence Hall of Fame allows recognition not only of persons who worked at NGA or one of its predecessor, but to others who have had a profound effect on the field of geospatial intelligence. Meeting details are being finalized. Additional details on these and other activities are available on the Region web site: heartland.ASPRS.org The Treasurer’s Report is omitted from this issue, due to computer problems. Look for it is the next issue.—Ed. Sports News: Thursday Invitational Bowling League Doug Nolte The Thursday Invitational Bowling League ended its 2014-15 season on the 16th of April. In the league championship roll-off we had the first half winners, the Schmelly Balls, taking on the second half winners, the Jollys. For the first time in the history of this long standing league, the Jollys came out on top. The Jollys are populated by such luminaries as Chuck Erpenbach and his brother Dean, Dennis Shannon, Roger Greenland, and the big lefty, Terry Bainbridge. These guys have toiled for years and finally came through with an outstanding performance to topple the Balls gang. Jeff and I were on the same team for years--actually the same two teams, as we bowled together on Monday nights also. He was a quiet man, yet very witty. Both of us shared a common sense of humor, and we fed each other the types of lines that could be considered light banter on a comedy show. His wit and friendship will be missed by all, and not the least by me, member of his team, admirer and friend. Wherever you are Jeff, keep on striking. Arsenal Mixed Bowling Pat Wiese The Arsenal Mixed League did not have a roll off this season because the Purple Turkeys (Sharon Hefner, George Manders, Diana Harwell, Marianne Norrenberns, and Larry Henning) won both halves. On the last night of the season the Alley Slugs, who were in second place, only had to win two games, but that did not happen; so the Purple Turkeys gained first place in the second half also. Trophies went to Tom Berra and Debbie Neustadt for high average, Kevin Marr and Sharon Hefner for high series, and Paul Estes and Velma Malawy for high single. The league was saddened this season with the death of two of our long time members, John Heisler, father of Debbie Neustadt and husband of the late Marge Heisler, both of whom worked at DMA, and Johnnie Betts, who worked in the Photo Lab. Come join us on Wednesday afternoons at 4 p.m. at Sunset Lanes for a couple of hours of fun bowling. Contact Pat Wiese, 385-7845, if you’re interested. We can always use bowlers. (Photos of the Arsenal Mixed Bowling League players are on the next page.) April 16th was not supposed to be the last day of bowling for the season; that was supposed to be the ninth. Unfortunately the 9th of April turned into a tragic day for this league. Jeff Delaplain, long-time member and founder of the league fifty-three years ago, suffered a massive heart attack just after finishing the second frame of the second game and passed away after having been NGAA West Newsletter for June 2015 page 4 2014-15 Arsenal Mixed League Rich Flauaus Debbie Neustadt Sharon Hefner Larry Henning Lisa Dean Kent Wroughton Diana Harwell George Manders Melissa Rader Dorothy Brumfield Velma Malawe Pat Wiese Ron Lindy Mike Clemente Paul Estes Gene Sylvester NGAA West Golf Group Doug Nolte As of this writing the NGAA West Golf Group, also known as the Aerospace Charting Seniors Golf Group, has played two out of 26 outings in the 2015 golf season. This year we have a population of 170 golfers from which to draw. Last season we averaged about 110 players per outing. We play a 4-player scramble format for 18 holes, awarding four teams in four flights of players. The flights are determined by the 18-hole score, grouping those scores as close as we can to an even number of teams per flight. Thus far the results are as follows: 16 April: The Missouri Bluffs 122 Players teed off on a wonderful day at this premier course. The only things spoiling the day were a flock of small bugs and a nasty Kevin Marr Tina Marr Ashley Marr Sean Marr Denny Dummeyer Ernie South Janis Schneider Ruth Walters Marv Staloch Tom Berra Barb Speiser appearance of rust-colored wasps that upset our intense concentration over the golf ball. We managed. The A Flight was won with a -8 score, Winning teams included Jim Akers, Dennis Terhaar, Don Giarraffa, Doug Nolte, Jack Eckhard and Paul Pals. B Flight was won with a -4 score and winning teams included Bob Edwards, Doug Torrie, Darryl Rue, Pete Grouzos and Joe Pfeifer. C Flight was won with a -2 (69) score and included winning players Randy Pratt, Tom Murphy, Bob Haddad, Ron Muse, Dan Snowden, Stew Pagenstecher, Harold Howard, Earl Phillips and Lee Readus. D Flight was won with an even par (71) and included winning players Ron Martens and Russ Wall. Rewards were given to players whose shots were closest to the pin on 5 holes and winners included Don Giarraffa and Darryl Rue. NGAA West Newsletter for June 2015 page 5 23 April: Glen Echo Country Club We had 117 participants at this fashionable country club in northwest St. Louis County. We've never played here before, and at this point our decision to play here again is up for vote. This is the oldest private course west of the Mississippi and it’s set up to be challenging. It was designed for the 1904 Olympics and was used during the years when golf was a competitive Olympics sport. the Neg Prep group some years ago. Attendees were Don Lippold, John Carty, Bob Diekemper, Kent Kenniston, Harry Lemakis, Larry Weisz, Elmer Filla and Rich Egan. After some discussion, we decided to return to "El Maguey" at our next luncheon on June, 11.All are invited for some "Dos Equis" and luncheon especialles. Photo Breakfast Club Frank Aufmuth, Gene Neiderschmidt There are many, many ups and downs on the fairways. Every green is perched far above the fairway, making the approach shots difficult to judge for folks of our abilities. Undaunted, we finished the day and had much to discuss about our first visit to the historic course. A Flight captured an astounding -4 (67) score manufactured by a team led by Ed de la Pena, Stew Pagenstecher and Darryl Rue. Bill Heidbreder was on a team chasing the de la Pena group. B Flight's best score was a +1 (72) and the top four teams in the flight included Ken Swehla, Jack Panula, Joe Jarvis, Ron Martens, Doug Nolte, Doug Torrie and Pete Grouzous. C Flight's best score was +3. In the four teams at the top of the flight were Ernie South, Paul Pals, Dennis O'Connor, Pat Hudson, and Ted Isringhaus. D Flight scores began at a +5. Included in the top 4 teams were Jack Eckhard, Dave Gillett, Harold Howard, Bob Day, Don Schmidt, Bob Edwards and Joe Pfeifer. Closest to the pin awards went to Doug Nolte and John Boyd. We're just beginning the season and at this time we have 24 outings yet to go before we finish up in early October. More fun awaits. Davis, who retired from DMA in 1993, is a self-described long-time member of TNMC, investing his time in on-line map editing, particularly in the New Madrid Seismic Zone, an area widely thought to be the probable site of the next major U.S., earthquake.
