Hope Is Never Silent: The Life And Legacy Of Harvey Milk

Hope Is Never Silent: The Life And Legacy Of Harvey Milk Emma Chow, Whitney Lawless, Jenna Richter Senior Division Group Documentary Process Paper Word Count: 500 Process Paper We are all very passionate about gay rights. We were looking for someone in history whose legacy directly affected life today. We eventually came across Harvey Milk. We chose Harvey Milk because although he was a leader 50 years ago, his legacy today is very prominent in some of the political issues. For example, samesex marriage is legal in many states. This incredible step could have never been taken without Harvey’s hard work and perseverance. Harvey definitely jump started the gay rights movement and it is incredible to live in the era where we see his hopes and dreams slowly coming to reality. We started researching in Ms. Lewis’s classroom on the computers. Then, we went to the Boulder Public Library and checked out books on Harvey Milk. We watched the movie Milk with Sean Penn.We also got an interview with Jordan Jo who is a tour guide in the Castro District when we went to San Fransisco to learn everything we could about Harvey and the legacy that he left. Our understanding of the topic changed as we worked on the project. At the beginning we thought that Harvey Milk’s most incredible achievement was when he was elected as an openly gay man. However, we came to realize that his true achievement was defeating Proposition 6, which would have banned gay and lesbians from working in schools. Harvey accomplished many things while in office, although it was only for 11 months. We put the documentary together by compiling all of our research, creating a storyline of what we wanted to portray about Harvey, and matching it with visuals that pulled it all together. We knew how to piece the videos together and learned how to add music and add text. These skills, both old and new, allowed us to portray Harvey Milk’s story in a powerful way. Also, we added interviews that told Harvey’s story from personal perspectives. The documentary managed to show these elements in a artistic and influential way that emphasizes all the incredible accomplishments of Harvey Milk. We also took all the judges comments into consideration and made changes to the documentary and the judges suggested. Harvey Milk was one of the most influential leaders in the gay civil rights movement, because he made a difference by getting elected. He showed all gay people that they could be successful in their fight for equality and proved that it wasn’t a bad thing to be gay. Harvey gave people hope, and that hope is still present today, through his legacy. The biggest gift that Harvey gave the world was his legacy of being a powerful gay man. He worked very hard to get elected, and made a huge difference in LGBTQ history. His main message was that gay people are just as capable of working in politics and every other job. Harvey’s inspiring story saved the lives of many people “in the closet”, and inspired them to “come out” and live the life they always wanted. (500)
