Grow a Herb Garden
If you’re new to growing vegetables and
herbs, Nick’s Garden Center is a great
place to begin. You can browse through
our huge selection of these easy-to-grow
plants and choose the ones you enjoy the
most in your kitchen and home. And
we’re always available and eager to help
answer all your questions.
Herbs look great in the garden, with the
additional benefits of their other uses.
Some herbs, such as lavender and bee
balm, feature colorful flowers, but most
other herbs create interest with their
gorgeous, aromatic foliage.
What’s great is that herbs don’t need to be
planted in a traditional garden. If you’re
an apartment dweller or someone with
limited space, these plants thrive in containers.
Growing your own vegetables and herbs
will provide you with years of enjoyment
and satisfaction as you learn about the diverse selection of available plants, experiment with different recipes and share
your results with family and friends.
Start a Cool Season
Vegetable Garden
March is here and spring is around the
corner, and you are probably longing for
some flowers and dreaming of spring
planting. Although it’s still a bit early for
many plants, now is definitely the time to
be planting cool-season vegetables in your
edible gardens. Cool-season vegetables are
uniquely adapted to Colorado’s climate
because they are able to withstand light to
moderate frosts, adding a month or more
of gardening time at the beginning and
end of our growing season. Cold-weather
vegetables include root crops such as
radishes and onions as well as low growing
green vegetables such as lettuce, spinach,
broccoli and cabbage.
In Mid-March plant onion sets, seed potatoes, garlic, shallots, bare root rhubarb,
asparagus, strawberries and pea seeds.
By April, it’s time to start planting leaf
lettuce, spinach, carrot, kohlrabi, turnip,
beet and radish seeds directly into the
garden. These durable plants develop their
best flavor during the cool days of spring
and will take whatever frost and snow
comes along. It is also the best time to set
out plants of broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, brussels sprouts, celery and leeks.
Remember to “harden off ” or acclimate
your transplants to outdoor conditions
over a period of 5 or 6 days to reduce
transplant shock.
