Mitigating Climate Change Impacts on Indian Agriculture through Improved Irrigation Water Management (MICCI) Partners Funding The project proposes to investigate the effects of climate change and variability on irrigation water security in India and to evaluate the effectiveness of better irrigation water management strategies to de-synchronize the timings of peak irrigation demand and minimum water availability and so maximise the productivity of the available water. India is an intensely agrarian economy with more than 70% of the population relying on rain-fed agriculture for employment and livelihoods. However, there has recently been a considerable change in both the spatial and temporal patterns of the monsoon rainfall, resulting in reduced crop yields and increasing uncertainty in the livelihoods of the rural poor. To combat this problem, farmers engage in supplemental irrigation using direct canal/river abstraction, on-farm reservoirs, or tubewells. To achieve the anticipated improvement in use efficiency, however, the irrigation water must be applied at the right amount and time but climate change will affect both irrigation demand and the quantity and timing of water availability (runoff and recharge), with consequences for the performance of reservoirs, direct river abstractions, tube-wells and other on-farm irrigation infrastructures. The specific objectives are to: 1. assess the impacts, and uncertainty, of climate change on water resources availability for agriculture within a range of climatically and hydrologically diverse areas across India; 2. assess the impacts of climate-induced shifting patterns in monsoon rainfall on crop-soil moisture regimes and potential irrigation demand; 3. develop and evaluate the effectiveness of robust irrigation water management approaches (scheduling, on-farm reservoir operational practices, artificial recharge etc) to achieve stakeholder-relevant outcomes under uncertain impacts on water resources and soil moisture changes; 4. Implement relevant impact plan activities which will ensure that stakeholders- farmers, policy makers, irrigation advisers, researchers, etc. derive maximum benefits from the project’s outcome. The project involves collaboration between internationally-leading scientists at 3 Indian institutions (IIT-Roorkee; NIT-Kurukshetra; NIT, Hamirpur) and 2 UK Universities: Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh (H-WU), Cranfield University (CU). Teams is working with stakeholders in India (farmers, regional and regional to national policymakers) and leading UK irrigation practitioners to deliver outputs that have lasting positive impacts on irrigation practices and management in India. The goals of the institute as embodied in the logo are truly remarkable in their scope of vision. The Institute provides Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Doctorate Education in Engineering, Sciences & Humanities; fostering the spirit of national integration among the students, a close interaction with industry and a strong emphasis on research, both basic and applied. It has been given the status of Deemed University. About Workshop MICCI stakeholder’s workshop is proposed to develop series of stakeholder relevant project summary documents on Beas river basin and Pong dam from the MICCI research work, which has been carried out under MoES-NERC funded research project “Mitigating Climate Change Impacts on India Agriculture through Improved Irrigation Water Management”.
