You might want to try self-directed
programming if…
● Traditional programming numbers are always
low, or are in decline for any reason.
● You have really over-committed teens who have extracurriculars every day of the week.
● Your teens have transportation issues, or your library is
inconvenient for public transportation.
● You feel like trying something new!
The Benefits
● Overcommitted teens with busy lives or
transportation issues don’t get left out
● Staff who can’t get off the desk can still provide
stellar programming
● Programs can help promote
library initiatives (e.g. Teen
Facebook Page)
● Your statistics look great!

Self- directed programming is NOT an excuse to operate in
absentia, NOT a way to get out of interacting with your
teens, NOT a way to inflate stats. It is intended to offer an
alternate path into their busy lives, and to show them that
you care enough to work around their needs. Point-ofservice contact is a critical component, a way to touch their
lives. That’s why I chase them down and rattle the craft
basket!
