VAJDA have come on as our sponsor for this year and have provided us with some new race numbers in the 400 & 500 range. This enable host clubs to arrange their starts according to the numbers if they wish. Fist start 100’s, second start 200’s etc. So thank you very much VAJDA for your sponsorship. This year the series sees the reintroduction of a race hosted by Big River Canoe Club, based in Grafton NSW. This club is one of the foundation clubs of the series which is now in its 15th year. It will also provide an even balance between NSW and Queensland clubs. The series is now an 8 race series with 4 events hosted by NSW clubs and 4 events by Queensland clubs. We have increased the required number of races that an entrant needs to complete in order to qualify for a medal in a particular class at the end of the series. This requirement is now 5 races. So you will have to cross the border at least once in order to get a medal. In consultation with the 8 member clubs a decision has been made to no longer distribute this booklet in printed form to paddlers. Instead it will only be available as download or email attachment. This has enabled us to keep the costs that the series organising committee charges the member clubs the same as last year. Keeping costs down enables to clubs to raise more funds from the races they host which ultimately benefits all racers. So please print this booklet yourself, read it on screen or save it to your portable device for reference on your way to races So happy paddling in 2015. Races in the Series are conducted by the hosting Canoe Clubs and are linked by a point score designed to promote participation as well as acknowledge the speediest paddlers. Paddlers of any level of skill and in any type of paddle craft are welcome to join in the competition. Northern Marathon Series Committee: Booklet , Website, Publicity Colin Cussel 0428213243 [email protected] Club Liaison Chris Mason 0401698441 [email protected] Point Score Julie Frost 0414765986 [email protected] Treasurer Elspeth Berger 0412913259 [email protected] Funding The Northern Marathon Series is self-funding using monies raised by the clubs that host races each year. For the 2015 Series, the host club for each race will contribute a maximum of $75 from the race entry fees to support the NMS. The remainder of the entry fees is retained by the host club to meet their State and Club financial obligations. The series funds are mainly used to cover cost of booklet, providing certificates and awards, and to replace boat numbers. Associated Events A goal of the Northern Marathon Series is to foster friendships amongst paddlers and their families and fellow travellers, so each host club is encouraged to organise some associated fun activities such as handicap sprint races on Saturday afternoon when the race is held on Sunday. Also, a preferred venue for dinner on the Saturday evening is either included in this booklet or will be advised prior to the event and we encourage paddlers and their families and friends to take these opportunities to socialise. Every town has something to offer for those who can spare some time in the area. Take an extra day or two if you can to visit the host towns and enjoy more than just the paddling. AGE & GENDER CATEGORIES Open Young Vets Mature Vets Vintage Vets Under 18s Under 16s Under 14s Under 12s Gender: Aged 18 to 34 years of age at 31 December 2015 Aged 35 to 49 years of age at 31 December 2015 Aged 50 to 64 years of age at 31 December 2015 Aged 65 or more at 31 December 2015 Aged 16 or 17 years of age at 31 December 2015 Aged 14 or 15 years of age at 31 December 2015 Aged 12 or 13 years of age at 31 December 2015 All paddlers who are aged 11 years or younger at 31 December 2015 Male Female Mixed Age category for Doubles is determined by the age of the younger competitor for Seniors (i.e. Open and Vets) and the age of the older competitor for Juniors. Under 14s compete over a short course, approximately half the distance of the full course. Under 16s may compete in the short or long course but will be awarded full points for either. Under 18s paddle the same distance as the Open and will receive half points if they choose to compete in the short course. While not all venues list a special short course for very young paddlers, novice or board paddlers, these can be arranged as required. www.nms.canoe.org au VAJDA 2015 Northern Marathon Series Book- BOAT CLASSES Any canoe or kayak will be accepted on the day, and will be placed in one of the following classes: International Racing Classes: K1, K2, K4, C1, C2 Australian Touring Classes: TK1, TK2, TC1, TC2 Surf Skis: SSki1, SSki2 (Surf Skis are made to SLSA Specifications.) Recreational Kayaks (e.g. sea kayaks): Rec 1, Rec2 Unrestricted: Un1, Un2, (includes ocean racing skis) Slalom Outriggers, dragon boats and any other vessels that float are also welcome if they can complete the distance within the time boundaries set by the host club ENTRY FEES No entry fee per race will be recommended by the Northern Marathon Series committee this year. The four Queensland Clubs (Currumbin, Brisbane, Varsity and Sandgate) have to pay dues to both Northern Marathon Series and Queensland Canoeing and may charge accordingly. Paddlers without Australian Canoeing affiliated membership may be required to pay an additional insurance fee per race according to the host clubs insurance policy. Membership of the Surf Life Saving Association of Australia does not provide insurance cover so the extra charge will apply if a paddler is not also a member of an affiliated canoe club RACE START TIMES & COURSES The first start will be at the time shown in this book but there may be multiple starts based on boat class, division or course length. The type of starts is determined by the host club and will be announced at the race briefing. Courses shown in the book may change on the day, depending on weather and other factors that may impact on the safety of paddlers. SERIES AWARDS Individual All paddlers are eligible for Series Participation Certificates. These ar e pr esented to paddler s who com plete at least three races, regardless of class or point score, and show venue, distance, class and time for each event completed. In addition, awards will be made to 1st, 2nd and 3rd eligible place getters in each class at the presentation night. Club Host clubs are welcome, and encouraged, to provide prizes at their own events. These may include Lucky Draw prizes at the conclusion of each presentation for which only paddlers still present will be eligible. There will be a Series Award for the club that accumulates the most points throughout the Series. The points for all members of a club count towards the Series Club Award, regardless of whether the individual paddlers qualify for Series awards. Clubs are asked to ensure paddlers who claim to be members of their club are in fact financial members at the time they race. Paddlers are asked to support their local clubs by maintaining their membership throughout the year. Across the Border Challenge Participation by paddlers from NSW and Queensland is roughly equal so there will be a tally kept of points accumulated by paddler's state of residence rather than the club to which they belong. This point score will be published after each race to add interest to the competition. There will be no trophy, just State boasting rights at the end of the season www.nms.canoe.org au VAJDA 2015 Northern Marathon Series Book- PRESENTATIONS For each race Awards for each race, including the race finale, are determined by the host club and will be handed out as soon as possible after the last competitor finishes. Series Presentations Date: Saturday 19 September, 2015 Location: 3 Traders Way, Currumbin Waters. (behind the Currumbin Post Office). Time: Dinner from 6pm, presentations from 7.30pm SERIES POINT SCORES & PRIZES Point Scores Individual To be eligible for the Northern Marathon Series medals a paddler must complete at least five (5) races in the Series in the same class, with their final score being the sum of the best 6 out 7 results including bonus (travel) points. Participation in both long and short courses will be counted. At the end of the Series, 1st, 2nd and 3rd awards will be made in all classes and will be calculated on the following basis: For the long course: 10 points for winning, 7 points for 2nd, 5 points for 3rd, 4 points for 4th, 3 points for 5th, 2 points for 6th, and 1 point for 7th and below who finish. For the short course: half the points shown above. Points cannot be transferred into different classes but long and short course points will be counted in the same class. No points will be awarded if a competitor fails to finish the course for which they nominated except when a paddler starts in the long course but can only finish the short. They will be awarded short course points as long as they cross the finish line as required and notify the judges at the time of finishing. Paddlers in doubles will both receive full points as above. Both long and short course paddlers will be awarded full relevant bonus travel points. Club Perpetual Trophy A trophy will be awarded to the Club with the most points for the Series. For this award, the total point score is the sum of points awarded to financial members of clubs for all races in which they compete, plus their travel points. Travel Bonus Points The Northern Marathon Series is first and foremost about participation. To encourage paddlers to travel to all venues, including those furthest from them, bonus travel points are awarded. Bonus points are based on the relationship of a club to the host club (see table following). Competitors who do not belong to one of the host clubs will receive the same points as those from the host club to which they are geographically closest. For instance, paddlers from clubs in the Brisbane area receive the same points as Sandgate Canoe Club members, while Sydney paddlers align with Forster-based Great Lakes Canoe Club. Just Paddlers is a unique club in that its members are drawn from all over NSW and from Queensland. Travel points for Just Paddlers members are, therefore, assigned according to their home state. Those who live in Queensland will receive points in line with Currumbin Creek Canoe Club, while those living in NSW will receive points in line with Great Lakes Canoe Club. The same principle applies to persons who may belong to a distant club but their residential address is within the area of a host Club. www.nms.canoe.org au VAJDA 2015 Northern Marathon Series Book- TRAVEL BONUS POINTS The Northern Marathon Series is first and foremost about participation. To encourage paddlers to travel to all venues, points are awarded to all persons not a member of the Race hosting club. Bonus points are based on the Kilometres travelled from your Club base to the host club race (see table following). Competitors who do not belong to the Race hosting club will still receive points as to encourage nearby clubs to participate in this series. For instance, club members from in the Brisbane area (travel usually 50km or less) will receive 0.5 points for participating in the Sandgate Race, the same will go for the Gold Coast clubs as well. Just Paddlers is a unique club in that its member s ar e dr awn fr om all over NSW and fr om Queensland. Travel points for Just Paddlers members are, therefore, assigned according to their home state. Those who live in Queensland will receive points in line with Currumbin Creek Canoe Club, while those living in NSW will receive points in line with Bonville Creek Kayak Club. Paddlers aged 14 and under must wear a Type 2 or 3 Personal Flotation Device (PFD). This is an essential requirement for insurance purposes. Other paddlers who are not strong swimmers should consider wearing a PFD as well. All paddlers MUST wear PFDs if they are directed to do so by a race official. We recommend paddlers wear some kind of footwear, sun-safe clothing, sunscreen and a hat. During the race Paddlers should observe the rules of navigation, keeping to the right (starboard) side of a channel when proceeding past approaching craft. Take particular care when cutting a corner, keeping a close watch for oncoming craft. Assistance must be given to any paddler in distress. The safety of human life far outweighs the importance of winning. Your race time will be adjusted if you lose time assisting another. Carry and consume sufficient water to prevent dehydration. www.nms.canoe.org au VAJDA 2015 Northern Marathon Series Book- Vajda 2015 Northern Marathon Series Race 1 Varsity Lakes This is also part of the Queensland Marathon Series DATE: Sunday 22 March 2015 HOST: Varsity Lakes Paddlers Club LOCATION: Sports House at Varsity Lakes, 337 Christine Ave, Varsity Lakes STARTING TIME: 9.00 am ENTRIES: 7.30 am to 8.30 am BRIEFING: 8:30 am COURSE: Varsity Lakes Waterways 15km for all U/18, Open & Veterans all classes ( long course) 10km for all U/16, short course all classes 5km for all juniors and beginners CONTACT: Ian Frost Club email: [email protected] PRE-RACE DINNER VENUE and TIME: Saturday 21 March, 6.30pm.
