The end of the school year can be a nervous time for students, especially those that
will be making the jump into elementary school, middle school, high school, or
college next fall. The parents of these transitioning students are left with a variety of
questions ranging from concerns about academic expectations to following
schedules to social skills to safety. The Parent Resource Center recognizes these
concerns and offers workshops that afford parents the opportunity to learn more about the next level of
schooling and how it might impact their child with a disability. Mark your calendar and plan to join us at
one of our upcoming sessions at the Kelly Leadership Center!

The Arc of Greater Prince William
A celebration of the many contributions made by brothers and
sisters of kids with special needs!
For siblings ages 8–11 years!
When a child has a disability, the entire family is affected. Sibshops provide support
and guidance to siblings of children with disabilities. Siblings are encouraged to share
the challenges and celebrate the joys with brothers and sisters in similar situations.
Sibshops are lively, action packed, 4 hour workshops that reflect the belief that brothers
and sisters have much to offer one another, if they are given a chance. The Sibshop
model mixes information and discussion activities with new games (designed to be
unique, off-beat, and appealing to a wide ability range). Sibshops are run by a team of
adults who have professional and, in some cases, a personal understanding of the
impact a child’s disability can have on brothers and sisters of that child.

$5.00 per child ($10.00 maximum per family)
Pre-registration is required in order to attend and is limited to 26 participants. Payment
is expected at time of registration. Registration ends on Friday, April 3. Foreign
language interpretation is available upon request if requested by Monday, March 30.

NAMI Basics is a free seven-week course designed for parents/caregivers of children and adolescents
with mental illness/emotional disabilities. (This course is not intended for parents/caregivers of
children/adolescents with intellectual/developmental disabilities, autism, brain injuries, or other
permanently disabling disorders.)
Pre-registration is required. Class size is limited to 20 participants. Pre-registration deadline is Monday,
April 1, 2013. Sign and/or foreign language interpreter services are available but must be requested by
Wednesday, March 27, 2013.

Dr. Sajjad Khan has worked with families, children, adolescents, and adults with a wide range of
behavioral, mood, and developmental conditions, including anxiety (generalized, social, OCD, etc.);
ADHD; depression; autism (including PDD-NOS); Asperger’s and Tourette’s. Dr Kahn specializes in
cognitive behavior therapy. Prior to joining Neuroscience, Inc., in Herndon, VA, Dr. Khan spent a
decade at Eli Lilly and Company, where he conducted clinical and health outcomes research. In his
workshop, Dr. Khan will give an historical overview of ASD, diagnostic criteria, brain development and
physiological functions, assessment strategies, and comprehensive treatment (including applied behavior
analysis and cognitive behavior therapy).
