Introduced are basic skills appropriate for this age group as well as safety
topics for parents and children: enter and exit the pool, blowing bubbles,
getting wet with toys, arm and leg action, front and back float, and

Choose safe places to swim and dive
Make sure your area is clear of others
Always go feet first in less than 5 feet of water depth

Make sure all buckles and straps are secure
Red Cross recommends securing pools with a barrier of at
least 4 feet and lock

Rescue a swimmer in distress safely
7. Beat heat and hold the cold
Know the hazards of hypothermia and heat related injuries
8. Learn about boating before you go floating
Learn about how to be safe in big areas of water
HERE ARE SOME ADDITIONAL POOL SAFETY TIPS!
Do not run near pools or on wet concrete to minimize risk
Parents should learn CPR/AED and First Aid to respond to
emergencies quickly and properly
Keep children away from pool drains, pipes and other openings to
avoid entrapments
Have a wireless telephone nearby at all times when anyone is
using a pool or spa
Always check the pool or spa first if a child is missing
REMEMBER: Drowning can happen fast and usually silently! Teaching
your kids how to swim only makes them safer in the water. Even if your
child knows how to swim, never leave him or her unattended!
These tips are provided to you by American Red Cross,
Poolsafety.gov, and North of the River Recreation & Park District.
