SWIM CLASSES Red Class swim classes are designed to help swimmers of varying ages and abilities develop their water safety, survival, and swim skills. Courses are age-appropriate and fun, helping participants stay motivated and achieve success on a regular basis. As children progress through the various levels, they increase their comfort level in and around the water. North of the River also provides Private Lessons that focus on one student. Parents and children learn together to increase children’s comfort in the water and build a foundation of basic aquatic and water safety skills. Introduced are basic skills appropriate for this age group as well as safety topics for parents and children: enter and exit the pool, blowing bubbles, getting wet with toys, arm and leg action, front and back float, and underwater exploration. All skills taught are with physical support from the parent. The philosophy of this class is to help your child feel comfortable in the water. As the parent, you will be teaching your child to relax and have fun in the water, as well as learn safety skills. Please note: This class will not teach your child how to swim. This class is the first step to getting your child started in the water. As your child progresses to the next levels he or she will begin to swim comfortably on their own. BEGINNING TODDLER (3 to 5yrs.) Introduction to Water Skills Orients children to the aquatic environment and helps them gain basic aquatic skills. New Skills: Enter and exit water safely, blowing bubbles, open eyes underwater, float on front and back, roll from front to back and back to front, leg actions, arm actions, and combining leg and arm actions together. ADVANCED TODDLER (3 to 5yrs.) Fundamental Aquatic Skills Helps children gain greater independence in their skills and develop more comfort in and around the water. New Skills: Jumping into water, bobbing, submerge entire head, open eyes underwater and retrieve submerged objects, front and back glide, combined arm and leg action on front and back, and safety skills. LEVEL 1 (6yrs. and up) Introduction to Water Skills Helps participants feel comfortable in the water. New Skills: Safely entering and exiting the water, blow bubbles, bobbing, open eyes underwater and retrieve submerged objects, leg actions, arm actions, and combine arm and leg actions together. LEVEL 2 (6yrs. and up) Fundamental Aquatic Skills Gives participants success with fundamental skills. New Skills: Safely entering and exiting water, fully submerge and hold breath, bobbing, open eyes and retrieve submerged objects, front and back floats, front and back glides, changing direction while swimming, combined arm and legs on front and back, and treading water using arms and legs. LEVEL 3 Stroke Development Builds on skills with practice in deeper water. New Skills: Headfirst entry from the side in sitting and kneeling positions, rotary breathing, survival float, tread water, push off in a streamlined position then begin flutter or dolphin kicks on both front and back, elementary backstroke. LEVEL 4 Stroke Improvement Develops confidence in the skills learned and improves other aquatic skills. New Skills: Headfirst entry from side in compact and stride positions, swimming under water, feet first surface dive, freestyle and backstroke flip turns while swimming, treading water, breaststroke, sidestroke, and butterfly. LEVEL 5 Stroke Refinement Provides further coordination and refinement of strokes. New Skills: Shallow-angle dive, flip turns, sculling, treading water, and improvement of the 6 strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, sidestroke, and elementary backstroke). LEVEL 6 Swimming and Skill Proficiency The goal is to enhance swimming skills for greater power, efficiency, smoothness and endurance. New Skills: Increase swimmer’s endurance, knowledge and comfort with strokes, while maintaining proper form. LEARN TO SWIM FOR ADULTS This beginner class is specifically designed for adults who want to learn water safety and skills. Our instructors will teach the basic water skills consisting of entering and exiting the water safely, front and back crawl, comfort going underwater, floating, front and back glides and treading water. PRIVATE LESSONS NOR Pool offers one-on-one Private Swim Lessons for all levels, from Beginning Toddler through Adult. DIVING LESSONS Learn to dive with individualized lessons. Lessons may consist of basic dives from the pool side or more skillful dives using the one meter board. JUNIOR LIFEGUARDING Learn what it takes to be a great lifeguard! Build lifesaving and leadership skills, along with fitness and professional development, while having a blast! The experience you gain through the Junior Lifeguarding program will help you prepare for Red Cross Lifeguard Training, which can be taken at age 15 ½ . This program is intended for those aspiring to become lifeguards, and are between the ages of 11 and 15. Participants should bring a swim suit, towel, and sunscreen. Please Note: This class is only offered during Session 2 from June 29 -July 10, for 1 hour per day M-F at the NOR Pool. The course includes: Lifeguard skills, First Aid, CPR for adults, youth and infants, CPR for the Professional Rescuer which includes AED administration, Bloodborne Pathogen training, Title 22 and Oxygen Administration. The class includes a series of physical tests prior to certification. Students must continuously swim 300 yards using 100 yards of Front Crawl or Breaststroke. Students will also be required to swim the length of the pool, surface dive down 10 feet, pick up a 10 pound brick from the bottom, and swim back to the starting point while holding the brick with two hands above the water. The students will need to be able to tread water for at least 2 minutes with no hands. There will also be a timed scenario to be completed at the end of the course to pass and receive the lifeguard certification. Some homework is included in this course and will be assigned as needed.
