A
nnual Normanna Garden Parties have been celebrated for some 66 years.
Invitations go out to our membership and other supporters of Normanna. The
Therapeutic Garden provides a wonderful venue for the event, especially when the
weather co-operates, as it did this year. August 17th was a good day for Members and invited guests to enjoy the outdoor event. Some of the residents were
also able to participate.

FALL 2014
A Message from your Board
T
his year we have celebrated
two special events in the history
of Normanna, the 70th anniversary
of the Norwegian Old People’s
Home Association and the 65th anniversary of the opening of our
home to residents.
We thank
those of you who were able to attend and for your support.
Myrna Latval
We are pleased to report that
President
the bus for Dania and Normanna
residents and our Outreach program has been ordered and should be available early in the new
year. Our thanks to so many of you who shared
our wish to make this a priority for our residents
and generously donated to make it
possible.
Our board committees are kept busy with maintaining our home and the heritage house. We are
fortunate to have a building committee that is able
to do many repair jobs on both buildings. The auditorium pot lights have now been replaced with
energy efficient LED ones. An area of siding has
been replaced on the heritage house.
The
grounds committee with the help of a volunteer
pruned and did a huge fall cleanup. Nordheim has
had cement work completed in several areas in the
patio as a safety measure.

Due to the age of our home we are looking into
replacing most of our furnishings. We thank a
resident and family for their generosity in donating funds for the purchase of two special
wingback chairs for Nordheim.
A specialized Hospital Beds & Mattresses Campaign is currently underway. New upgraded
hospital beds will replace the existing aging
standard beds.
We have been diligent as has management and
staff in preparing for Accreditation. Extra meetings with our coordinator have been held following our board meetings.
The board appreciates and works together with
a very competent and dedicated management
team ensuring that our home is well maintained
and our residents are well cared for.
We have a new website. Read more about it
on Page 10.
Our best wishes for a happy and healthy holiday season and for a wonderful year in 2015.

…..more about our
3
66th Annual Garden Party…..
M
yrna Latval welcomed guests and introduced Ladies Auxiliary President, Lise Leslie, and
celebrity guests, including Government dignitaries, Councillor Sav Dhaliwal and MLA Raj
Chouhan and Bruce Strang, Vice President of District 7 Sons of Norway. They spoke generally
about their long term association with Normanna and the continued community support. MLA
Raj Chouhan also recognised the Ladies Auxiliary contribution and recommended buying the
Cookbook as a Christmas stocking stuffer. A good time was had by all.
V
olunteer staff and Board Members set up furniture
and Canopies, microphone for the Speakers and a
piano for Peter Williams who entertained during the
luncheon. Members of Ladies Auxiliary prepared some
200 “Norwegian” sandwich plates served during the
Party with fruit punch and coffee available. A nice
touch was the serving of “Kransekake”, traditionally
served at Norwegian weddings and other events.
Ladies Auxiliary sold a new Cookbook / Celebrating
“Normanna 70 years”, as a fund raiser.

G
uests arrived about 1pm and were treated
to a Historical Collage display of Normanna from 1949-1999 and 2000-2014, prepared
by our President, Myrna Latval. It brought
memories of the early years and the development over time; most interesting for those
who” had been there” and been a part of making Normanna grow to the beautiful home
which we all are very proud of.

FALL 2014
.... about Normanna .....
Entering Normanna is a little like visiting Norway .... the Norwegian
character of the home was created by incorporating light maple woodwork, Norwegian looking furniture, Rosemaling (floral painting detail) and Norwegian style fireplaces. Many of
the light fixtures are also Norwegian. The walls are decorated with Norwegian paintings and
other artwork, many of which were donated by the Norwegian community and reflect Norwegian heritage and tradition.
A
very special feature in the reception area has “Solveig and Lars” dressed in traditional
Norwegian costumes displayed in a Norwegian setting with other artifacts including a
“Hardanger” violin and a 100 year old Norwegian Bible.
Normanna opened its first home 65 years ago, but the “new” Normanna was built during the
late 90’s. Credit for creating “a little Norway” in our community goes to the Board of Directors
of the day and in particular to Board member Else Vea who collected Norwegian arts and crafts
from Norway and Canada for years, anticipating the future needs, and guiding the decorating
committee in achieving its goal. Normanna is a beautiful home very much appreciated by our
residents. We can all be very proud of Normanna and the support it receives from its members
and the Community.
(Else Vea continues to serve …..She is currently a member of the Normanna Foundation Board)
You may wish to join one of our regular tours of Normanna.
Please call 604 522 5812 to arrange.

Easter Monday Egg Hunt
Normanna hosted an Easter Egg Hunt for children aged 2-14.
Many children attended and
participated in indoor and outdoor games, including the Easter egg hunt. Residents were delighted to see the young ones and welcomed them
with joy, excitement and smiles. At the end of
Philippine Week June 23-27
the event, the children were rewarded with chocolates and popsicles.
Residents were served delicious Filipino “Puto”
on the first day. These are traditional Filipino
baked goodies and were thoroughly enjoyed...seconds were requested by many residents. A Filipino singer entertained on the following day and sang 3 classical Philippine
songs followed by residents’ requests. Staff
presented a fashion show exhibiting their National costumes, these are called “Barong” and
“Filipiniana”. Residents were served luncheon
in the Therapeutic Garden. The good weather
and lunch was enjoyed by about 30 residents.
Other events included and `Show and Tell`,
Armchair travel, and entertainers.

Executive Director’s Report
W
e are in the final preparations for our accreditation survey
scheduled for Nov 24 – Nov 28, 2014. Accreditation Canada’s
criteria include required Organizational Practices (ROPs),
Instrument Thresholds (Safety Culture Tools and Work Life Pulse Tools)
and standard sets of criteria for Governance, Leadership, Medication
Management and Infection Prevention and Control.
The Board of Directors and Management along with staff have been
working tirelessly preparing for the survey and implementing quality improvement initiatives.
Normanna’s Balanced Scorecard was originally developed in the Spring of 2012 and revised in
July 2014 and is included in my report (see also page 7). It is imperative that our stakeholders
are informed of our Strategic Direction and performance. Below is a graph that outlines the
progress we have achieved on those Directions to date.
We are also pleased to inform our donors that the Bus has been ordered. This would not have
been possible without your contributions and generosity. Thank you all!
Respectfully submitted

FALL 2014
Meet the Staff—Clayton Norbury
I
started in the development office for ScandiaCare in
July of this year as a part time Database and Donor Relations Coordinator. For the past 13 years I have worked
in various roles within CIBC including Credit Card customer
service and Collections. For the past 6 years in my current
role as Facilities Coordinator in the CIBC Collections office,
one of my primary responsibilities has been organizing all
of our internal employee events and fundraising activities
for BC Children’s Hospital, CIBC Run for the Cure and United Way.
A couple years ago, I realized that I am very passionate
about fundraising for a good cause and donor relations,
and that I am most satisfied with those aspects of my job. I went to BCIT and started taking
courses in fundraising which led me to recently earning my Certificate in Fundraising Management. This is my first position directly supporting a development department, and it is very rewarding for me personally to be involved in fundraising for such a great organization.
In my spare time (which I don’t have much of anymore with 2 jobs) I like to go for long drives
and find places I’ve never been, listen to music, and watch movies. I also like to travel but
haven’t had much opportunity to do so. I went to Vegas for the first time last year and loved it,
and I hope to plan a trip to Europe within the next couple of years.
Thanks for reading; I look forward to meeting and working with you. Stop by and say hi if you
get a chance.
If you wish to be recognized as a Donor for the 2014-2015 Fiscal Year,
please ensure that your donations and consent form are received by the
Development Officer before 31st March, 2015.
