I know it is probably customary to thank people who have helped with this great year but I cannot. I thank each and every one of you because greatness isn't just from one or two people, it is the entire Lodge that came together as one to make this happen. There is strength in numbers and it shows. With this being said I can't stress enough the fact that we as Elks are there to help and service our community, our children, our Veterans, and don't forget, our fellow Elks. We must be able to support one another before we can support the above mentioned. I am looking forward to my Past Exalted Ruler years as I do plan on staying active in our Lodge. I encourage all of you to support your next year’s Officers. Remember that they too are volunteers and serve from their heart just as you. I thank you once again and may the principle of Elkdom stay in your heart. Always remember: “As an AmerICan, I Can, As Sandy Bowen Exalted Ruler , We Can”. Fraternally yours, Sandy Bowen Exalted Ruler 2014-2015 From the Secretary’s Desk Lodge Officers In accordance with Grand Lodge Statutes, applicants for membership will be posted at the Lodge 7 days prior to the meeting when they will be voted upon. Please come down to welcome our newest members. Secretary Message: AAArrrggghhhh!!! This is the sound a secretary makes when her printer loses it’s mind in the middle of printing membership cards. Never fear! A couple of extra days and a few work-arounds and we are back in business. I apologize that the turnaround time for you cards has not been as fast as it should be. A huge thank you to those of you who have already paid dues. Remember March 31st is the deadline. March 31st is also the Grand Lodge deadline. Delinquent members must be dropped at that time. If you are having problems getting your dues caught up please call my office. Maybe we can find a way to help you. All of our members are important to us! Now it is time to pick my last one. Now stop saying "Pick me, pick me." This person has been a great support of the Lodge, helped when needed, been a friend to many. So I want you go to look in the mirror as the one I pick is YOU. Gottach ya. Now be nice and share. No fighting about it. First come first serve. You are all picked as Elk of the month. Love you all, and thank you. Leading Knight Kathy Stark This months volunteer has been around the Lodge for some time. She has been active with the Children’s activities in the Lodge for many years. She has done amazing things with the Christmas party and everyone has always had fun at the Easter party. She has also been involved in the picnic organizing children’s activities and helping with the overall event. Next time you are at the Lodge and see Lori Heger, remember to congratulate her and thank her for all that she has done. Together we are raising money to support our Lodge and Charities. Sincerely, Becky Schmitz; Games Manager The Elks and Patriotism World War I The Elks patriotism and generosity helped the nation to victory in World War I. In 1917, the Grand Lodge allocated $2 million to finance efforts to assist U.S. soldiers. The Order organized and equipped the first two base hospitals in France, and to accommodate the maimed and wounded, the Elks built a 700bed Reconstruction Hospital and gave it to the War Department in 1918. This was the first of what was to become the VA medical centers. That same year, the Order built a 72-room Community House to take care of the families visiting the 40,000 soldiers stationed at Camp Sherman, Ohio. During the war, the Salvation Army was severely handicapped in its great efforts for the servicemen by lack of funds. To make sure that this work continued, the Elks undertook campaigns to raise funds for the Salvation Army, and on many occasions assumed the entire cost of these undertakings. In addition, the Order at Christmastime in 1918 gave the Salvation Army $60,000 to continue its programs. Following the war's end, the Elks made 40,000 rehabilitation, vocational, and educational loans to disabled veterans who were ineligible for government help or awaiting approval of their applications. This service was so effective that the government followed the Order’s example and established a revolving fund that was the precursor to the GI Bill. More than 70,000 Elks served in the armed forces during World War I. More than 1,000 made the supreme sacrifice.
