You can contact us: Dear Parents/Caregivers Firstly, congratulations to all of our students for their fabulous spirit and enthusiasm, which made for a wonderful Swimming Carnival last week. Millbrook proved to be worthy winners and our House Leaders worked fantastically as a team, supporting the other students and teachers. A big ‘thank you’ goes to everyone who was involved in making the day such a success: Joe for a huge amount of organisation behind the scenes and his leadership on the day; our teachers for their creativity and energy in leading many different events; our hardy volunteers, Helen, Karen, Nadine, Hilary, Mara and David who joined me in the pool to support our younger students; our SSO team who headed down to help with anything extra that needed to be done; and the many parents who came along to cheer, score and applaud. The Burnside venue provided plenty of space and shade and their staff team commented on the high level of professionalism that was evident in the program. We have been very busy this week with 3 way interviews. These provide a special opportunity for your children to discuss their learning with you and I am sure that you would have heard plenty about reflection, goal setting, peer feedback, successes and challenges. The students are buzzing with all sorts of achievements as we reach the end of term 1 and this is a wonderful time to reflect on how far they have come already this year. Our musical Shakespeare Rocks! for years 5-7 is underway, involving a very committed group of students who are meeting during lunchtimes. An initial cast has been set and we will ‘grow’ parts from there. Our team includes the following students; Patrick, Amelie, Emma, Edward, Stefanie, Wei-E, Ashleigh, Tina, Thomas, Leila, Matilda, Isabella, Siobhan, Nicole, Nikita, Sarah, Jocelyn, Tya, Sasha, Drew, Ruby G, Candace, Sammi, Saskia, Audrey, Daisy, Emily, Stefanie, India, Shriya, Harriet, Amilia, Ben, Francesca, Maeve, Perry, Louisa, Ruby and Aeriel. At this stage we are looking at week 4/5/6 of term 3 for two performances. If your child’s name is not on the list and should be, please let me know urgently. Finally, our site has been notified that it will undertake an External Review process in Term 2 Week 8. This will involve interrogation of our achievement data as well as many other aspects of our teaching and learning, governance and management processes. More details will follow early term 2. The Story of the Norwood School Great War Memorial presented by local historian, Denise Schumann Don Pyatt Hall, George St, Norwood 29 April 2015, 7.30 p.m This talk will unravel the secrets behind the construction of this unique war memorial designed by the Headmaster of the Norwood Public School and built by the children themselves. It is important to note that at the time the obelisk was constructed, Commonwealth legislation proscribed that all funds that may have gone to the construction of public memorials be directed to the war effort. This legislative response in 1916 was not only economic in its intention but also political as the government set about trying to control and manipulate public sentiment following the disastrous events at Gallipoli and the high rate of Australian casualties on the Western Front. The enormous loss of life in the Battle of the Somme led to a decline in enlistments in Australia and to an outcry against the introduction of compulsory conscription. It is against this backdrop that Denise Schumann will explain the motives and the inspiration that led the Norwood school community to erect a war memorial regardless of government regulations. All are welcome to attend what promises to be a great evening of local history. RBL/ICT at Norwood Primary School The Year 6 students at NPS are currently participating in a Global project titled, ‘A Week in the Life’. Students from Bulgaria, Nepal, Thailand, United States of America, and New Zealand are also collaborators in this project, which centres on exploring Geographical issues. So far students have introduced themselves to each other, both as individuals and as a collective group. On Monday afternoon Room 13 and 14 were involved in ‘meeting’ the students from the American Pacific International School in Chiang Mai, Thailand through a Skype call. Students had the opportunity to ask each other questions and generally get to know about life from another perspective. Check out this link to see the other schools involved in this project: http://aweekinthelife15-1.wikispaces.com And here to see our multimedia ‘Handshakes’: http://aweekinthelife15-1.wikispaces.com/Class+Handshakes This week students will be introduced to their small research teams. Each team will be allocated a specific issue to explore, at both a local, national and global level. We will look forward to sharing our learning with you. Haemish Middleton Director of Football Operations Of great news is the decision to initiate a collaborative project between our school and Adelaide University which will result in master plan concepts for the future development of our grounds. We are also submitting a grant application to attract funds, which we hope to be used to resurface the grass area by the OSHC building and upgrade other spaces. Also in an effort to benefit the environment, the school is looking at carbon reduction initiatives. Mooted to begin with, is an audit of the school’s energy consumption. Governing Council agreed that school will be closed on 19th May for staff training purposes. The next GC meeting is scheduled for 11 May.
