BETTY’S LEGACY
A Nottingham woman passed away recently leaving a generous
donation to the care home in which she spent her final years
By Gemma Allen
Betty Swift was 94 when she sadly
passed away, whilst living at the
Oaks Residential Care home in St
Anns and she certainly left with
positive feelings about the care she
received having left £2,400 of her
savings to the centre in her Will.
Betty first moved to the centre
after falling at home and
spending some time in hospital
back in 2012 and The Oaks
worked with Betty to get her
back onto her feet again and
confidently. Unfortunately after
another fall it was decided that a
care home was the safest
and most suitable option
for her.
The fiercely independent
Betty insisted on moving
back to The Oaks residential
care home because she had
received such good care
there previously and had a
truly positive experience.
The home provides care for those
with or without diagnoses of
dementia and evidently provides
excellent levels of service.
Betty had written in her
Will that when she passed
away, she wanted her remaining
money to be paid as a donation
to the care home as her wish
was to support the centre in
providing the excellent levels of
care she had received throughout
her time at The Oaks Residential
Centre.
Armardeep Bhattal, manager at
The Oaks, said: “We are extremely
thankful that Betty would leave
us such an important legacy,

the money will really make a
difference to our resident’s lives,
not just now but in the future.
Betty’s daughter Gina met with me
to talk about the donation
and the great work that the centre
had done for her mum. She told
me the staff here really helped to
improve Betty’s
life and indeed
prolonged it.”
With Betty’s
selfless
donation,
the centre
is planning
to spend the
money on 6 new
wheelchairs which will
mean that residents can
get out on trips, due to
the chairs being up to
safety standards and
the rest will be spent
on improvements to the
outside social area.

Mansfield
A memorial plaque has been
unveiled at the site of a former
meeting house and burial ground
recently as part of a new heritage
trail, highlighting Mansfield as the
birthplace of the worldwide Quaker
movement.
The Old Meeting House, where
Mansfield’s Quakers had met since
the 17th century was demolished
in the 1970s. Headstones from the
adjoining Quaker burial ground
were moved to a new Meeting
House building off Rosemary Street
and the remains were moved to
Mansfield Cemetery.
The site was subsequently used as a
public car park but was earmarked
for Mansfield’s new £9m bus station
and in 2012, during construction
work on the new building, further
Quaker headstones and human
remains were recovered from
beneath the car park. The burial
ground is now known to have
been the final resting place for
approximately 150 Quakers, buried
there between the 1700s and 1950s.
The first Quaker burials had taken
place in nearby Skegby.
The memorial plaque remembers
the Quakers who were once buried
there. Some headstones have been
placed at a Garden of Reflection
adjacent to the New Friends
Meeting House, where Mansfield’s
Quaker community meets today.
Mansfield can also claim to be the
actual birthplace of the Quaker
religion.
A Flaw in Smart Energy?
Reluctance to share data
about personal energy use is
likely to be a major obstacle
when implementing ‘smart’
technologies designed to monitor
use and support energy efficient
behaviours, according to new
research led by academics at The
University of Nottingham.
The study, published online by the
journal Nature Climate Change,
found that while more than half of
people quizzed would be willing
to reduce their personal energy
consumption, some were wary
about sharing their information
with third parties.
Increasing energy efficiency
and encouraging flexible energy
use are integral parts of plans
to reduce the UK’s greenhousegas emissions. Demand-side
management (DSM) systems use
technology such as smart meters,
which transmit information about
energy usage from the demand- or
customer-side to energy companies.
This information can then be
used to develop and implement
more energy efficient practices.
However, it is unclear how UK
consumers feel about the benefits
of DSM.
The academics, led by Dr Alexa
Spence in the University’s Horizon
Digital Economy Research
institute and School of Psychology,
analysed responses to an online
survey of 2,441 UK residents and
found that most participants (58
per cent) said they were willing to
reduce their personal energy use.
However, approximately one-fifth
of survey respondents said they
would be uncomfortable sharing
data about their personal energy
use with any outside party.
Those concerned about climate
change were more likely to
accept DSM, while those
concerned about the cost of
energy were less likely to
accept various DSM scenarios,
including timed shut-offs for
electronic devices and allowing
electricity network operators
to make decisions about the
most efficient times of day to
run appliances like washing
machines and fridge-freezers.
People concerned about the
cost of energy were also more
reluctant to share their energy
data and this partly explained
their lower acceptance of DSM.
The results suggest that to
encourage public acceptance of
DSM, the government should
emphasize the environmental
benefits and allay concerns
about the policies increasing
the cost of energy.

technologies can be seen and tried
in a family-friendly, purpose built
environment under the expert care
of skilled professionals.
The impact of hearing loss is huge
whether in childhood or adulthood
and today’s hearing technologies
can do much to alleviate this - but
only if they are well used.
The Ear Foundation began their
quest to raise £0.7m to build the
new Centre nearly three years ago
and have been overwhelmed by the
support of the local and business
community.
The new building doubles the
accommodation on the current
site, with an additional 250 square
metres of space to provide: a new
group therapy room custom built
for deaf children, families and
adult groups; two sound-treated
rehabilitation rooms; a technology
suite with all the latest assisted
listening devices; an information
lab equipped for people to access
all the latest information and

for professionals and families
where they can learn about how to

West
Bridgford
Property prices in central West
Bridgford have risen by up to 20
per cent on some roads over the last
18 months – a remarkable increase
according to one of the area’s most
experienced estate agents.
Associate director at FHP Living
Ian Marriott has been working
in the West Bridgford market for
nearly 20 years and believes this
is the most buoyant the market has
ever been in the popular suburb.
He said: “The area surrounding
Bridgford Park has long been
popular with buyers, but over
the past 18 months in particular
we have seen prices rocket on
certain streets – sometimes up to
20 per cent. Everyone from young
professionals to families is looking
to locate there, and that is really
being reflected in the house prices
we are seeing.”
In recent years the café culture
in West Bridgford has become
established, with FHP leading the
way with a number of high profile
commercial lettings including
Central Avenue’s latest addition

helping to drive prices in the town.
the Stop Rogue Trader campaign to
prevent residents from becoming
victims of doorstep crime. It is designed to gather
intelligence and to take
enforcement action against those
who specifically target vulnerable
consumers.
Officers from trading standards
and the police will be conducting
regular patrols where they will
speak to traders working on
residents’ properties. The aim is to
establish whether or those working
within the city are genuine.
Trading standards is encouraging
friends, families and carers to
report any suspicious traders
working at any address they visit.
Common things to look for are
poor standards of work, asking for
all or most of the money before the
job is started, asking to be paid in
cash, and an amount of payment to
be made against work still being
done. A further 1,000 incidents are
reported annually to the National
Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB)
with the average consumer left
£4,650 out of pocket.
Rogue traders will often offer
to carry out property repairs
such as roofing, tarmac work,
block paving, fascia and soffit
installation and gardening. This
may also include furniture,
mobility aids, security systems
and energy-saving products.
It often involves charging
extortionate prices for materials
or payment plans.

always get three quotes prior to

Police took
enforcement
action last
week against
two premises
in Radford,
Nottingham, which trade in
so-called “legal highs” and drug
paraphernalia.
Two men were arrested during the
operation which focused on THC:
The Hood Clothing in Alfreton
Road and Solar Eclipse in Ilkeston
Road.
Officers who attended Solar
Eclipse arrested a man on
suspicion of a firearm (section
5), supplying articles to facilitate
the use of controlled drugs and
possession with intent to supply
controlled substances.
A second man was arrested after
officers attended THC: The Hood
Clothing. He was arrested on
suspicion of supplying articles
to facilitate the use of controlled
drugs, possession with intent to
supply controlled substances and
possession of an offensive weapon.
The operation was carried out in
partnership with Trading Standards
- whose officers seized a large
quantity of new psychoactive
substances or “legal highs” - and
is believed to be the first such joint
operation of its kind in the country
with Police and Trading Standards
using their joint powers to tackle
this emerging issue.
Officers from both agencies are
also using powers under recently
introduced antisocial behaviour
legislation in a bid to prevent
further sales which have an
ongoing detrimental effect on the
local community. This has taken
the form of issuing Community
Protection Warning letters to ban
the further sale of “legal highs”
from the premises visited today.
PC Tom Andrews of
Nottinghamshire Police said: “By

are sending a clear

association with
the consumption of

Families in Nottingham have
another two weeks to give their
views on the way services are
delivered in children’s centres
Nottingham City Council has
extended its consultation asking
people to comment on whether
a greater partnership could be
created between schools and
children’s centres which are based
on the same site.
Schools would take over the
running of the buildings – and all
services offered by the children’s
centres would continue. But some
services could usefully be moved
out of children’s centres
and into other local venues such
as libraries and community
centres.
No children’s centres would
close – but services would
be reorganised and delivered
in partnership to make better
use of council buildings while
continuing to meet community
need. By working in partnership

with schools, the children’s
centres could provide additional
space for school meeting rooms
and classrooms.
The four-week consultation has
now been extended for another
two weeks, and will also allow
people to put forward their own
ideas for how they would like
to access services in children’s
centres.
The survey can be filled in

entries will be put into a prize

Survey forms are also available
inside children’s centres and
have been sent out to groups and
individuals that use the centres.

Saddle Up…! Creative Class of 2015
Cerebral
Leading cancer charity Cancer
Research UK has been chosen
by Innes England as its charity
of the year and the commercial
agent already has a busy calendar
of fundraising events planned for
2015, including a challenging bike
ride.
Fifteen dedicated cyclists from
the firm will take part in the ride,
taking place on the 6th June.
Setting off from Nottingham city
centre, the team will head east
and complete the ride in Skegness
where the team will celebrate with
the town’s famous fish and chips.
Earlier this month, the firm raised
over £400 for Cancer Research UK
during its ‘Easter Challenge’ which
included a competition between
the firm’s three offices (Derby,
Nottingham and Leicester) to have
the best Easter-themed decorated
office and the best fancy-dressed
staff. Cake sales and raffles also
helped to raise funds.
Innes England has already
committed to organising a number
of fundraising events throughout
the first half of this year including
monthly dress-down days, a
business squash tournament and
a staff sports day, in addition to
pre-organised events such as Pretty
Muddy in Leicestershire, regional
Race for Life events and Relay
Angels in Derby. More events will
be added later in the year – all with
the aim of building up its overall
fundraising barometer.
Tim Garratt, managing director
at Innes England, said: “Cancer
Research UK undertakes vital
work and we are proud to support
the charity. I hope everyone
digs deeps to support our efforts
throughout the year.”
If you would like to support
Cancer Research UK via Innes
England’s efforts please visit

Need Refreshing?
‘In the summer time when the
weather is hot, you can reach
right’….out for a refreshing glass
of one of Belvoir’s new sensational
summer drinks: Elderflower & Rose
Cordial; Mango & Peach Cordial;
Mango & Peach Pressé and Summer
Fruits Pressé.
As with all Belvoir’s drinks, the
new summer collection is hand
made on the family
farm using lashings
of real pressed fruit
juices and freshly
picked flowers with
no artificial additives
or preservatives, but
this time Belvoir has
taken the sweetest,
most fragrant tastes of
summer and bottled
them to enjoy all year
round.
Elderflower & Rose
Cordial (50cl) –
available from
Ocado
Inspired by the
popularity of their
Elderflower & Rose Pressé, Belvoir
has developed the matching
Cordial made from freshly picked
elderflowers and rose petal extract. It has the delicate taste of fresh
elderflower and dreamy scented rose,
as that’s simply what
it’s made from, and is
absolutely delicious
diluted with still or
sparkling water but
added to a glass of fizz,
it’s out of this world!
Summer Fruits
Pressé
(75cl and 25cl)
Designed to
complement the Belvoir
Summer Fruits Cordial
launched last year, the
new Summer Fruits
Pressé similarly combines the
sweetness of real pressed strawberry
juice and the sharpness of pressed
raspberry and redcurrant juices (no
concentrates used here). Blended with lightly sparkling
Belvoir spring water it has a rich,
fruity and naturally lovely taste
straight out of the Victorian Kitchen
Garden. Serve chilled over ice for
the taste of a traditional English
summer, no matter what time of year. The 75cl bottle size is available now
from Asda.
Whatever the English weather
throws at us this summer, Belvoir
has ensured we can at least get a
taste of our favourite season, even
if they can’t guarantee to make the
sun shine!

Stir-Fried Seafood with Noodles
Having bags of frozen seafood and vegetables in the freezer is always a great standby for an emergency
instant supper. Whether they are mixed with spicy rice, added to pasta or soups or simply served in a
stir-fry, as with this recipe, it will always promise to be a fast and tasty supper.
SERVES: 4
INGREDIENTS:
• Bag of mixed seafood • 4 tablespoons olive oil
• 2 red peppers, seeds removed and cut into thin
strips
• 4 leeks, cut into strips
• 2 large onions, peeled and cut into thick wedges
• 300g cherry tomatoes, halved
• 4 garlic cloves, peeled and cut into slivers
• A few sprigs of coriander
• 4 teaspoons balsamic vinegar • Salt
• Ground black pepper
METHOD:
Cook the noodles in boiling water according to packet instructions. Drain, rinse them thoroughly under
cold water and set aside;
In a large frying pan or wok heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil, add the peppers (cut into strips), leeks (cut
into strips) and onions, stir fry until lightly brown. Add the cherry tomatoes and cook for a further 2
minutes. Remove from the pan and set aside in a warm place;
Heat the remaining oil in the same pan, add the garlic and add the mixed seafood and cook over a high
heat. Cook for 7-8 minutes if the seafood is frozen (or 3-4 minutes if it is defrosted or fresh);
Add the drained noodles, reserved vegetables, coriander and balsamic vinegar and stir fry until piping
hot, season to taste and sprinkle with extra balsamic vinegar if necessary.
Vegetarian Version
Omit the frozen fish and add a bag of frozen vegetables in its place. Just make sure the vegetables are cooked through
and the dish is really hot.
Freezer Tip
If you freeze thinly cut strips of raw chicken breast, you can also add them straight from the freezer to this recipe, in the
same way as you cook the seafood. Make sure the chicken is piping hot and cooked through.
Veolia, (Nottinghamshire County Council’s waste contractors), are encouraging Nottinghamshire residents to make the most of their leftovers

Special
Day
Your Special Day
By Gemma Allen
Getting married is undoubtedly
one of the biggest events of your
life and as a couple very much
in love you want to enjoy the
whole experience of starting a life
together from the very beginning.
Before rushing into setting a date
and getting stressed by the whole
process, take a step back and allow
yourself to enjoy the run up to
one of the most important days
of your life. The last thing you
should do is get madly focused
on getting everything done right
away and making every decision
in a split second. It doesn’t matter
if your wedding day is next week
or next year, the important thing to
remember is that it’s your day and
you should cherish every moment
of it.
Planning your wedding doesn’t
have to be stressful. Careful
preparation, keeping within budget
and simply enjoying what you are
doing will make things far easier
for both of you. Savour every
second as the memories that you
are creating will last forever.

Celebrity Guest
Pupils at Hollygirt School were treated
to a special celebrity visit last week from
former Blue Peter presenter Helen
Skelton
By Gemma Allen
The School won a national
competition as part of this year’s
Red Nose Day activities that required
schools to submit photos of their
pupil’s funniest faces and wackiest hair
from Red Nose Day, plus a 250 word
summary of what the school did to mark
the day.
Hollygirt’s entry was picked as the overall
winner out of over 20 entries across
the country and the grand prize was a
visit from the Comic Relief supporter
and former Blue Peter presenter, Helen
Skelton.
During Helen’s visit, pupils
welcomed her with beautiful songs
performed by the Junior School choir, a
wonderful assembly where the children
were able to ask Helen about her personal
achievements and her fundraising for
Comic Relief. She was treated to a
celebrity lunch with pupils in the winning
photographs. The day ended with a
showcase Geography lesson led by Mrs
Howlett and supported by Helen. Pupils in
Year 5-8 were split into teams and asked
to consider the essential supplies they
would need to take on an expedition to
one of eight extreme environments, for a
challenge similar to the one’s Helen has
done. They could only choose 5 essential
items to take with them. Helen helped the
children with their ideas and was greatly
impressed by their final presentations.
All of the pupils were in awe of everything
Helen had to share with them in the
assembly, she was a truly motivational
speaker, sharing her tales of running 80
miles in under 24 hours, explaining not
to put your energy into proving someone
wrong but to instead force that energy into
what you are doing.
The pupils at Hollygirt School are
brilliantly motivated already so I can only
imagine how meeting Helen will push
them even further.
Helen told the Nottinghamshire in Focus:
“The kids here are great, what a lovely
school to be part of, it seems like a lovely
atmosphere, the kids have been telling me
about their Comic Relief day and that for
we appreciate that it can sometimes be
difficult, which is why we try our best to
make it fun with Comic Relief. Teachers
have a lot of work to do and we know how
busy they are so that’s why we hope that
fundraising for Comic Relief is fun, not
a chore. Let your hair down, lighten the
mood and have a laugh.”
“I haven’t had much experience of
independent schools but I am blown away
them it just seemed like a lot of fun.”
I asked Helen what she would recommend
to any schools that may be thinking about
fundraising.
She explained: “These days there are so
many calls from charities to fundraise and
and impressed by Hollygirt School.”
explained Helen. “There’s a lot of pressure
on teachers and education and here they
seem to be dealing with that in a very
determined and unique way so I am really
impressed.”

Planning a funeral isn’t something
that has to come about when you
lose someone, it’s becoming more
and more common for people to
arrange their own funeral in order

to ease the burden on their
loved ones.
Planning ahead is an important
part of life, it gives you peace of
mind and the security of knowing
that the future is taken care of; but
thinking about your own funeral is
never an easy thing to do.
Pre-Planning for your own funeral
is a thoughtful, responsible and
cost-effective thing to do, not only
does it ensure that your wishes are
carried out to the letter and that
you get the service you want, but
also helps to reduce stress at, what
is for them, a difficult time.
With Nottinghamshire Funeral

Whilst other Funeral Service
Providers offer a whole host
of funeral options, each at an

options, but they are covered by
the all-inclusive price. They even
allow you to select the coffin finish
and handles, if you wish, at no

Your funeral will be conducted
with courtesy and dignity and

Teaching History With
100 Objects is a series of
stimulating, free online
resources for teachers to
help motivate and inspire
young people.
The pioneering project
has been coordinated by
the British Museum with
funding from the Department
for Education.
The project consists of 100
interesting objects from 40
different museums across the
UK and aims to support and
enhance the teaching of the new
history curriculum for
key stages 1-3. Each object
resource includes information,
helpful teaching ideas, images
and links to video and other
media. The list of objects and the
resources have been developed
and written by the British Museum
with support from the Department
for Education.
Objects used in the online
library relate to topics from
the history curriculum
including Events, Vikings and
Anglo Saxons, Ancient Greece
and more.
A set of force-feeding equipment
which was used at Liverpool
Prison during the period in which
Lady Constance Lytton the famous
suffragette was imprisoned there,
has been used in the 100 Objects
educational project.
Personal accounts of such
equipment being used on these
political prisoners are held at the
Galleries of Justice Museum in
Nottingham. This equipment is currently
displayed in the museum’s freeto-enter World War I exhibition,
‘Heroes and Villains’ and can
be viewed by NCCL school and
college visitors.

Let’s Talk
Business Most Ethical Company
Businesses in Derbyshire,
Nottinghamshire and
Leicestershire outperformed
their national counterparts in the
first three months of the year,
according to the results of a new
survey.
East Midlands Chamber
(Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire,
Leicestershire) has released the
results of its latest Quarterly
Economic Survey (QES), for Q1
2015, which found that business
growth remained robust in the
early part of the year, giving
an increasing number of firms
optimism for the year ahead.
The findings were in sharp
contrast to the national survey
released by the British Chambers
of Commerce earlier this month,
which saw firms reporting
weaker results in most areas –
including domestic sales, exports
and business investment.
The Chamber tracks business
performance across a range
of key economic indicators
– including sales and orders,
staffing levels, price expectations,
investment intentions and
business confidence – to produce
a quarterly ‘State of the Economy
Index’.
After falling in two consecutive
quarters at the end of 2014,
the index increased from a
year-ending 377 to 386 in Q1,
bolstered by firms’ strengthening
confidence in their profits and
turnover in 2015, which is
resulting in rising staffing levels
and investment plans.
