remembrance of his Dad, and will
ride 100-miles through
the Nottinghamshire countryside
this June.
Tom, 26 from Aspley, will join
thousands of cyclists taking
part in the Great Notts Bike Ride
(GNBR), part of Cycle Live
Nottingham, on 20th and 21st
June 2015, in memory of his
Father who sadly passed away
with dementia in summer 2014,
Tom Wicks & friend at last year’s Great Notts Bike Ride
aged 80.
His father, Ian Wicks, a former
Marketing Manager at British
Sugar, wasn’t diagnosed with
dementia until one year
before he sadly passed away,
despite living with the effects
of dementia four years before
his diagnosis. Tom said: “Since
my Dad suffered from dementia
for a substantial amount of time
before being given treatment,
his health declined rapidly in
his later years, which was an
exceedingly difficult time for him,
his family and friends.
“I am keen to support the charity
as much as possible. I completed
the 50-mile ride last year, and
will continue to challenge myself
by riding 100-miles in June, as
well as participating in Life Cycle
for a second time with
my colleagues.”

management buyout
with support from First
Enterprise Business Agency.
The deal was led by T&S Heating’s
finance director Saeed Rafique and
managing director Robert Bluff after the
previous owner retired from the business.
Operating from their Arnold headquarters,
the company employs more than 80
members of staff and provides heating,
bathroom and building services across the
East Midlands.
Saeed said: “On his retirement, the
previous owner was looking to sell the
business so we began discussions about
the possibility of selling it to us.
“We needed additional funding and I had
previous experience of working with First
Enterprise so they were my first port of
call to speak to about financial support.
They understand and fully support our
business plan and aspirations.
“Both Robert and I have ambitions to
grow the business and particularly to
expand our private client work.”

A headteacher is aiming to tackle
the shortfall in one-to-one pupilteacher support in many schools
by launching his own video
e-learning hub.
Leon Hady, the celebrated
headteacher at Nottingham’s
Stone Soup Academy, has selffunded TuitionKit, an online suite
of interactive video content to
support revision in Maths, English
and Science for GSCE and A
Level students aiming for the
highest grades.
This comes amid concerns that
teachers across the country have
less time to focus on individual
student revision in the run up to
GCSE exams, due to increased
administrative demands and
limited resources.
Leon said: “The growing burden
of red tape placed on many
teachers is restricting ability
to provide booster sessions for
pupils needing the most help. As
a result, parents are turning to
private tutoring at considerable
cost – which just isn’t an option
for poorer families. High quality
tuition should be available to
everyone, regardless of how much
their parents earn.”
TuitionKit is an affordable
subscription service which allows
pupils to watch over 1,000 tutorials
and review over 200 model exam
question answers, all the while
tracking their learning progress.
Pupils learn at their own pace,
away from inappropriate content
and adverts that can punctuate
tutorials on YouTube, for example.
Leon said: “I’ve been sharing
revision guidance electronically
since 2009 and it has
consistently improved the grades
of many pupils. Feedback indicates
that people prefer to learn by
tracking and controlling their
progress - recapping, taking breaks
and focussing on the subject matter
that will help the most in their
exams.
“I set up a channel on YouTube
initially, and discovered that
thousands of people were
accessing the videos. This quickly
grew to millions of views around
the world, leading to positive
comments from thousands of
pupils, many of whom achieved
A and A* grades thanks to my
video content, without ever
having met them in person. I then
teamed up with other excellent,
passionate teachers,
like Jonathan Hicks,
a maths specialist, to
bring other subjects to
students.”
Leon, who was one of
the first headteachers
in the UK to guide a

adding:

resource for busy teachers who

Sport Nottinghamshire, organisers of the
challenge, are looking to increase activity
in the workplace by launching a new
two-week challenge, aimed at females, in
conjunction with Nottinghamshire’s This
Girl
Can campaign. Sarah Williams,
Club Development Officer for Sport
Nottinghamshire, said: “This Girl Can
is a fantastic initiative to encourage
more females to get involved in sport in
Nottingham.
“We wanted to involve the campaign
within the workplace challenge and hope
by doing so will motivate females to log
their activity, get active and have fun. It is
a fantastic opportunity for individuals to
challenge work colleagues to try something
new.”
From 1st to 14th June, females are being
encouraged to participate in physical
activity and log their efforts using the
free Workplace
Challenge online activity tracker, with spot
prizes awarded at random to
those involved.
As part of the challenge, £1 sport classes
will also be made available at participating
sport clubs to females throughout June to
further encourage
female involvement.
Employees across the county are encouraged
to get together with colleagues to pool their
efforts and win points for their workplace
by taking part in sports and other physical
pursuits.
The activity tracker will run throughout the
year and will have various challenges taking
place throughout, with the next of
these being the two-week challenge starting
on the 1st June.

THIS SUMMER
Help build a helipad!
You could take on the challenge
of a lifetime this summer – and
help raise money for a helipad at
the Queen’s Medical Centre at
the same time.
Daredevils could descend from
the roof of the magnificent
Lincoln Cathedral on 8 August
or take in stunning scenery while
abseiling in the Peak District
on 25 July, while keen cyclists
might like to take on the London
to Paris or London to Brighton
cycle ride in September.
Nottingham Hospitals Charity is
organising these and a whole host
of other challenge events, such
as skydives and treks, in aid of
our Saving Lives Helipad Appeal,
which aims to raise £3m to build
an onsite helipad at the Queen’s
Medical Centre.

shopping centres, have stepped in
to safeguard the immediate future
of Nottingham city centre’s Street
Pastors by agreeing to provide
the necessary funding to ensure
that they can keep operations
going in the short- term. The
Street Pastors had been receiving
funding from Comic Relief but
this has now come to an end so
they were in danger of folding.
The Nottingham BID already
supports the Street Pastors as part
of its activities to ensure a safer
late night economy in the city
centre and had plans to provide
additional support to them,
assuming that the BID secures a
second term when it comes up for
renewal this summer.
“Our members that operate in
the night time economy really
value the work of the Street
Pastors and this is why we have
decided to step in and help now
by providing additional funding,”
said Jeff Allen, chairman of the
Nottingham BID. “They help
look after vulnerable people who
are enjoying a night out in the
city centre, taking pressure off the
police and the medical services,
who can devote their time and
resources to more serious incidents
as a result. Their activities save the
emergency services a lot of money,
too.”

Golden Shepherds Pie
This is a great recipe for getting
children to eat vegetables without
them noticing. This recipe will feed
8-10 people so if you're cooking for
less, make in two dishes and freeze
the second dish, or freeze in individual
portion containers.
Serves: 8-10
Cooking time: 40 minutes
Ingredients:
• 2 tablespoons olive oil;
• 4 onions, peeled and roughly
chopped;
• 1.35kg minced lamb;
• 2 level teaspoons tomato puree;
• 1 teaspoon dried rosemary or
thyme;
• 2 level teaspoons yeast
extract|marmite;
• 50g plain flour;
• 2 x 400g canned chopped
tomatoes;
• 500ml water or meat stock;
• 1.35kg potatoes, peeled and
chopped;
• 500g carrots, peeled and chopped;
• 100ml warm milk;
• 50g butter;
• 50g red Leicester cheese, grated;
• A sprig of herbs.
Method:
1. Heat the oil in a large frying pan
and cook onion until golden brown.
Add the meat and cook for a
further 5-10 minutes. Add
the tomato puree, herbs,
Marmite, Worcestershire
sauce and flour. Cook over
the heat for 2-3 minutes.
Transfer to a saucepan and
add the chopped tomatoes,
water or meat stock, cover
and allow to bubble gently
for 45 minutes, stirring
occasionally.
2. Meanwhile, cook or steam
the potatoes in a pan of
water for 20-25 minutes or
until soft. Add the chopped
carrots to the potatoes
for the last 10 minutes of
cooking. Drain well and
return to the pan. Mash the
potatoes with the carrots
and add the warm milk and
the butter, and beat until
fluffy and smooth.
3. Preheat the oven to
180°C (350°F) mark 4. Put
the meat mixture into an
ovenproof dish or individual
freezer dishes. Top with the
potato and carrot mixture
and sprinkle with the Red
Leicester cheese, decorate
with a sprig of rosemary.
Cook for 35-40 minutes or
until golden and bubbling.

said Lisa, from West Bridgford,
near Nottingham. “After looking
around for an alternative I found
there was nothing on the market
and that’s how Lisa Lemon hands
free bags was born.”

(ncn) Health and Social Care
students came together with
NHS healthcare professionals to
celebrate International Nurses’
Day on 12th May, in recognition
of the fantastic work nurses and
midwives do all over the world.
The event, which was organised
in partnership with the
Nottingham University Hospitals
(NUH) NHS Trust, gave students
the chance to meet healthcare
professionals from departments
including: emergency, child
services, care for the elderly,
community nursing, and
midwifery. Students heard firsthand what it’s like to work in
the sector and they were able
to learn about the many career
opportunities available in the
locality.
ncn Clarendon was
overwhelmed with interest
and support, with more than
30 stalls giving all kinds of
information on careers and health
issues, from sexual health to
critical care, and visitors even got
to try their hand at practical skills
in the college’s brand new
Skills Lab.

the commercial side of business,
working in IT as a commercial
director.
“I always had this yearning to
go back to doing something
creative,” said Lisa. “Someone
said to me ‘you need to do
something that feeds your soul’
and that resonated with me.”
Lisa has had some excellent
feedback from those who have
already used Lisa Lemon hands

“A group of girls from West
Bridgford took one to Leeds
Festival and they thought it was
great,” she says. “A friend took
one to America and said it was
invaluable. She described it as
being like her third hand. I used
mine on a visit to Australia and

my valuables, like my purse,
passport, phone and tickets were
attached to me, which gave me
peace of mind.”
