YEAR 7 STUDENTS Read For My School 2015: An Update Dear Parent/Carers, Earlier this year we invited our students in year 7 to participate in a fantastic reading initiative - Read for My School. This project, which runs until 10th April, is a print and digital reading scheme that enables students to enter into a competition that promotes reading for pleasure and also rewards schools and individuals with the opportunity to win prizes, simply by reading. The scheme is supported by the Pearson Foundation, Booktrust, and the Department for Education. Our students are encouraged to read as many and as wide a range of books as they can in the two months of the competition. The Read for My School website includes a library of over 150 online books to choose from and all participants can access these freely and at any time during the competition. These books are not downloadable, but need to be viewed directly on the website. Read for My School is fully compatible with most tablets, android and iOS mobile devices and can be accessed via iPad. Books to suit the full range of reading abilities are available, including material for pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. The books are organized in eight genre-categories. We have set our students a target to encourage our students to aim to read at least one book in each category. The categories are 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Historical Fiction Mystery & Horror Humour Adventure Animals & The Wild Science Fiction & Fantasy Film & TV Real Life Reading of books is equally encouraged. Students may also choose to read any book of their choice offline and any book read that fits one of the eight genre categories can be recorded. After reading a book online, students’ records will automatically update to say they have read a book. After reading a book offline, pupils will need to enter the book details manually via their Read For my School account in order for it to count towards their total. Students already complete a Reading Log as part of their English lesson and books read can count for both. Your child is registered at the Read for My School website www.readformyschool.co.uk .We will be logging reading in school, but you can also do this at home: From the homepage/log-in screen, click sign up as a pupil beneath the login fields. Complete the short pupil account form, inserting the Reading Group Code – 420244. When recording the account username, please use the student’s Nova Hreod Username: first five letters of their surname and first two letters of their first name. This will enable us to identify the students on the system. Then click create account. Ask your child what they have used as their username and password (it could be written in their planners). After reading the welcome message, click Get Started and you are ready to read. I would recommend that you take five minutes to look at the How it Works tab in the top right hand corner. Once logged into the website using the students username, password and school code 420244, click on the Read tab found at the top of the page. Click on OFFLINE READING on left side of the page. Type in the title of ANY BOOKS read since January. Select the genre. Click Save and repeat the process for each book read. Participation in the scheme is entirely voluntary so why should your child join in? From a parent’s perspective, every pupil that registers will have access to 150 free online books and encouragement is given to try books from different genres, improving reading confidence. From a student’s perspective, 150 free books are available online; as part of the main competition they can qualify to win books for themselves and for the school. Within school they will qualify for prizes based on both a league table system and a random selection of participants. Celebrating Reading Students have already been rewarded for reading achieved and logging completed during Term 3 at a special Year 7 Assembly held on 5 March. Every student has been challenged to log a minimum of 5 titles by the end of the term. 5 Nova Stars will be awarded to any student for meeting this challenge . All students who have read and logged more than 10 titles by the end of term 4, will have their names go forward for the final rewards draw for 10 Nova stars and book prizes. Prizes will be presented during a Rewards Assembly with Swindon Secondary Schools and the Patron of Reading and Writing, Joffre White on Thursday 19th March during P3. The Learning Resource Centre is open Monday to Thursday 8.15am – 4.00pm and on Fridays between 8.15am and 3.00pm where there is always a member of staff available to help your child register or to find a suitable book.
