 For Immediate Release April 30, 2015 Calling all the good people in Finland to help the victims of Nepal Earthquake Non­Resident Nepali Association Finland has mobilised the Nepali community to raise funds from the streets in Finland for the Finnish Red Cross. We are very thankful to the good people of Finland who have donated generously during the last few days and we are hopeful of their continued support. We ask the general public to help those volunteers generously so that the Red Cross can fund the relief operations in the areas affected by the earthquake. A donation of as little as 10 euros can save many lives. The need of support is enormous at this stage and every cent counts. We would like to thank the Finnish government for their continued aid it has provided for our country, and the many INGOs and NGOs in Finland, such as Finnish Red Cross, Finnish Church Aid, Save the Children and Plan Finland for their support. However, we urge everyone – the Finnish government, relief organizations and the general public – that the need for help in Nepal is great for the short term as well as the long term recovery from this disaster. Nepal is the oldest and one of the two current development partners of Finland in Asia and this time Nepal really needs assistance in recuperating from the aftermaths of the earthquake. On Saturday April 25th, a magnitude 7.9 earthquake struck Nepal. There have been more than 60 shocks in the two subsequent days. The reported death toll has crossed 5000. According to Wall Street Journal, the economic damages of the disaster have been estimated by U.S. Geological Survey to exceed Nepal’s GDP of 20 Billion dollars. The economic impact is larger than the Indian Ocean Tsunami of 2004, and Haiti earthquake of 2010. More than 3,000 Nepali people live in Finland and are involved in various sectors. The Nepali people in Finland are working as entrepreneurs, researchers, engineers, medical and other professionals along with many students all of whom have been affected by this earthquake in one way or the other. Many of us have lost our near and dear ones including family and friends. Even larger number of Nepali people living in Finland have had their families’ homes in Nepal demolished by the earthquake. Now our family members are living in tents, waiting for food and other relief materials. Lack of proper drinking water, food and sanitation threatens to cause an epidemic to spread, if proper actions are not taken as quickly as possible. The Nepali community in Finland is very anxious at the current situation. The helpless feeling of not being there to help our families and friend in Nepal has depressed the community.
