DESERT SYMPOSIUM 2015 Information/Call for Papers/Registration The 29th Annual Desert Symposium April 17–20, 2015 at the Desert Studies Center, Zzyzx, CA Theme: Mojave Miocene: 15 Million Years of History Trip: Compare and Contrast Miocene Basins across the Mojave Desert The 29th annual Desert Symposium will be held at California State University's Desert Studies Center at Zzyzx, on the shores of Soda Lake south of Interstate 15 between Barstow and Baker, California. This historic site includes meeting rooms, overnight dormitories, catered meals, and showers: all these amenities are included with registration. This year's Desert Symposium is presented by the Desert Studies Consortium, California State University. The 29th Annual Desert Symposium: Mojave Miocene: 15 Million Years of History The symposium organizers request presentations on current research in archaeology, history, paleontology, geology, ecology, biological sciences, and environmental issues. A proceedings volume will be published with the field guide, associated papers, and abstracts. Information for Authors Abstracts and papers are due by January 13, 2015 Abstracts & Posters 15 minute presentations in geology, paleontology, geomorphology, anthropology, archaeology, botany, ecology, zoology, history and multidisciplinary studies in or related to the California deserts and surrounding provinces. Student Awards The Bob & Bobbe Adams Student Research Paper/Poster award is presented to the outstanding student presentation or poster (undergraduate/graduate students). The presentation must be a student as first author paper or poster. A cash award of $50 is presented at the banquet. Field Trip: Theme: “Compare and Contrast Miocene Basins across the Mojave The field trip theme will show variable rates of deposition during the early and late Miocene period on the Mojave Block, particularly by the presence or absence of paleosols. The trip route will be designed to return to the Center on Sunday night for the obvious amenities Day 1, SUNDAY: may run from Baxter Wash in the northern Cady Mountains to Afton Camp Ground, south to eastern, then western Daggett Ridge, then north to Rainbow Loop and the West End of the Mud Hills. Time permitting, an additional leg will run north to Coolgardie and Murphys Well, then east to Barstow and the DSC. Day 2, MONDAY: may run west from Barstow along Historic Route 66 to Hodge and then south on Helendale Road to Victorville and I-15. Then west on Phelan Road to Hwy 138, then southeast to the Cajon Valley Formation and the Crowder Formation in Cajon Pass.
