The North Shore Snowboard Team (NSST) was established as a partnership between snowboard coaches Christopher Nakonechny and Andrew George in 2002. is a snowboard coaching program designed to meet the needs of snowboarders between the ages of 11 and up. The program offers professional coaching to aid in the development and the promotion of competitive snowboarding within the Vancouver area. is based out of North Vancouver and all on hill training currently takes place on Mt. Seymour and Grouse Mountain. offers several programs, all of which are aimed at developing young athletes towards their potential. Each program is designed to be a stepping stone in which athletes are able to progress through en-route to the Provincial, National Development and National Teams. The intensity of each program is designed to meet the needs of the athletes depending on their age and commitment to the sport of snowboarding. The athlete will be able to choose which events they are interested in receiving coaching. Group sessions will be offered in all aspects of the snowboard competitive circuit including Half-pipe, Slope-style, Boarder-cross and Alpine race events. The focus will be upon developing the athletes general riding skills, developing competitive techniques as well as fostering an understanding of mental and tactical awareness, which will in turn help them to achieve their ultimate goals within the competitive snowboard world. MISSION STATEMENT “To provide the highest level of coaching to all athletes while promoting a safe, positive and fun environment in which athletes may develop their abilities and progress towards their own personal goals.” OBJECTIVES & PROJECT DESCRIPTION The North Shore Snowboard Team is committed to providing professional training for competitive minded snowboarders aged 11 and older. In conjunction with The Canadian Snowboard Federation and the British Columbia Snowboard Association, The North Shore Snowboard Team will continue to promote the growth of competitive snowboarding within the lower mainland as well as provide programs and services, which meet standards, set by the Canadian Snowboard Federation. The team's programs are designed to foster skill development, individual progression and social interaction within the participants. The programs offered by NSST are designed to fit into the existing structure of programs offered by the Canadian Snowboard Federation. The program guides participants through the steps of competition at the local and provincial levels. Participants will be encouraged to follow a dynamic training schedule, based upon individual goals and areas of interest. Training sessions will be conducted as groups: however the objectives and goals for each session will be individualized per athlete. The amount and intensity of training as well as the number of competitions attended by the program participants will vary with age and goals. PHILOSOPHY The North Shore Snowboard Team's training philosophy is based upon individual goals and progression within areas of interest. We believe this training philosophy is superior for a number of reasons. Athletes remain motivated to work towards their personal goals for the simple reason that the goals are not generic goals for the group as a whole, rather more rewarding towards personal achievements. Training sessions will be more enjoyable and thus a major positive environment to promote progression. This approach also focuses on improving athlete's strengths to promote confidence and eventually improving their weaknesses. OLYMPIC ROAD The road to the Olympics for a snowboarder is a long up hill climb. The National Organization makes the decisions on what athletes represent their country. This choice is based on set guidelines that snowboarders must complete. With in the year prior to the Olympica an athlete must find themselves ranked in the top 32 athletes in their discipline in the world. Athletes achieve this status through high-level competitions such as World Cups, The World Championships, and Grand Prix events. To be incited to these high-level events can be very difficult there are only a certain amount of spots allocated to each country. A rider needs experience and results from other high profile competitions. These are very high-level events that teams such as the British Columbia Provincial Snowboard Team enter. A great option for young riders looking for that experience is to try competing in some of the British Columbia Snowboard Association events throughout the province, www.bcsnowboard.co. Another option is the competitions at your local resort will hold throughtout the year. Getting yourself into that first competition may seem a little daunting. You may be a little unsure as to how everything works; what the judges are looking for, or if you have the tricks in your bag to perform well. In the past there hasn’t been too much help in the Vancouver area for young riders in this position. The North Shore Snowboard Team, www.nsst.ca, was developed to holp future potential Olympians take that crucial first step towards the Winter Games. The NSST programs are designed by riders and coaches specifically tailored to give young athletes the fundamental skills, experience and knkowledge to move upwards into the higher level competitions. Paving the way for future Olympians like yourself. PROGRAMS The North Shore Snowboard Team offers several programs, all of which are aimed at developing young athletes toward their potentials.
