Message from the President
At our March 2, 2015 dinner we are honored
that we will have the President of Medgar Evers
College and former Chancellor, Rudolph F.
“Rudy” Crew address our membership and their
guests.
This will be a great opportunity for our
organization to hear from a former Chancellor
of our great city. He can speak to some of the
reforms that our educational system has
undergone since he left.

January 29, 2015
I want to thank our Board of Directors and all of
our members for making our October dinner a
great success. It was wonderful to see so many of
our colleagues sharing their experiences with each
other and having the opportunity to listen to our
Chancellor, Carmen Fariña speak. Our Chancellor
spoke about her vision and about some of the
changes we would be experiencing as we moved
forward this year and years to come.
This past month, the Chancellor announced a
reorganization of our system for supporting
schools: Strong Schools, Strong Communities. She
explained how these changes would provide
clearer lines of accountability and would enable
our system to deliver supports that are better
aligned to our Framework for Great Schools. She
stated that “The goals of this reorganization are to
streamline decision-making and increase
communication across our system, from central
administration to school communities.”
Networks (school support providers) as we have
come to know over the past few years, will be
changed. We will now have seven geographicallybased Borough Field Support Centers that will
provide school support and Superintendents acting
as both our advocate and primary line of support.
As I stated in our Fall Newsletter, Public
Education today is a product of more than a
century of reform and revision. In each era,
visionary individuals have taken the lead and
transformed the system. Our Chancellor has
always been that transformational leader.
As Chancellor of New York City Public
Schools, Dr. Crew led a number of reforms,
including adoption of curriculum standards for
all schools, the creation of new mechanisms for
school governance, and the introduction of
school-based budgeting. Dr. Crew has served
in leadership roles in Miami-Dade, New York,
Boston, Sacramento and Tacoma,
Washington. He is a well-respected educator
and author.
Our Forum Committee will shortly be
announcing a date for our next Educational
Forum.
Look soon for our Professional Journal and our
new website. Our website is updated and will
have a new look shortly. Visit our website at
www.nyape.org.
I again want to thank everyone for their support
and contributions to our organization. The New
York Academy of Public Education continues
to promote the interests of urban education of
public schools, private schools, and colleges
and universities.
Respectfully,
Louis Pavone
