TIPS TO CONSIDER WHEN COMPILING A BUSINESS PLAN
The first thing to do if you would like to start a business is to think through all the details of the business and to compile a
business plan.
Some of the basic questions that need to be answered in the business plan are:
TIP 1
TIP 2
TIP 3
What type of business
would you like to start?
How will the day-to-day
running of the business
work?
Include all the background
documents that will
prove to the hub or fund
managers that your
business could succeed.
A BASIC OUTLINE OF WHAT YOUR BUSINESS PLAN
NEEDS TO INCLUDE
1. Introduce the business. Include some background
information on your business. This background should tell
us what your business is about, what industry or sector it
forms part of, and what product or service it will offer. We
would also like to know how you developed the idea for the
business and who the shareholders will be.
• What raw materials you need.
• How you will produce your product and deliver it to your
customers and how much will you produce.
• How you will make sure your equipment is kept in a
good condition.
• How much stock you need to meet your customers’ needs.
2. The market you will serve is important for us to know
about. (The word “market” means the kind and amount of
customers who will be interested in buying your products
or services.) Information about your market should include:
• What your target market is, what their needs and wants
are and other businesses already successfully supplying
this market.
• What size the market is and the demand for your product
or service.
• Is there a demand for these products or services.
• If you will be involved in imports or exports.
• If there are any signs from the past and the present
that show that your market could grow in the future.
• What the prices and quality of your services or
products are.
• Marketing and communication: How you will let your
market know about your business and get people
interested in buying from you.
• How have you studied your market and know what its
needs are.
5. As far as the people who manage and work in your
business are concerned, we need to see:
• A diagram (called an “organogram”) to show the different
job positions in your business and how they relate to one
another.
• A brief description of the most important managers.
• People and skills needed and tasks people will perform.
• The training that will be needed to develop your employees.
• The salaries that employees will earn and any bonuses.
3. Tell us in your plan about the opportunities that exist for
your business.
• Where you would like to see your business in five to
ten years.
• What do you want to achieve and how you will achieve it.
• What are the strengths and threats of your business.
• What the threats are that could lead to your business failing.
• If you have any networks (groups of people you know)
that could help your business succeed.
You should also tell us in your business plan about any legal
agreements and insurance policies that your business will need.
4. There are also some practical things we need to know
about running your business:
• Where you will run your business from.
6. Your business will need strong financial systems in
place, so tell us as much as you can about your business
finances:
• All relevant documents about the finances of your
business from the past three years (if your business
already exists).
• How you expect your financial statements to look for
the next three years and why.
• What the financial requirements of your business are.
• Accounting policies for your business.
Ensure that you gather all the necessary documentation
that you need to submit with your business plan:
• Proof of residence, this is either a recent utility bill (water,
rates, electricity, etc) that has been sent to your address
or you will need a letter from the person you are living
with, stating that you do live with him/her with a copy of
their identification document and one of their utility bills.
• A copy of your identity document
• Three months’ bank statements
• Tax certificate

HOW WE DECIDE WHICH BUSINESSES WILL BE SUPPORTED
We look at the following criteria when evaluating businesses:
• The business must have a large black shareholding and management structure;
• The owners of the business must be involved on a day-to-day basis in the management or operation of the company;
• The owners of the business must be part of the local community where the business operates;
• The owners of the business need to contribute to the business from their own financial resources;
• Loans need to be able to be repaid in good time;
• The business must have scope to grow and be sustainable; and
• The business should care for the environment.
