The Chief Nursing Officer received a call from a patient who recently had outpatient surgery. She wanted
to start by complimenting the young man that works at the desk when you walk in the new area. She said
he was very pleasant and helpful. She also said that both Denise and Donna, the nurses who took care of
her, were amazing, just amazing.

 Improved security through the addition of 12 hours per day of security staffing.  Capital purchases such as the purchase of new telemonitoring equipment throughout the hospital.  Increased leadership rounding on associates to ensure their voice is heard and that equipment, services, and tools needed to
perform duties are available.  Improved communication through Relationship Centered Communication training.
 Held additional Town Hall and Nursing Town Hall meetings at regular intervals.
 Expanded Shared Governance committee meetings.
 Increased training opportunities and professional development through programs such as the Nursing Certification Challenge.
 Improved physician behavior/issue occurrence reporting program that closes the communication loop with affected associate(s).
 Nursing Professional Practice Council was initiated 1st quarter 2015 – to hear the voice of the nurse and engage in shared
governance.

A Really Nice Compliment
Associate Chief Nursing Officer Cathy Edmisten relayed a wonderful message from a patient. The message
goes to everyone who was involved in his care. The patient is Steve Porter, who is the Director of Hernando
County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center. Steve has shared his story with many people. “I am very proud
to be a team member at Oak Hill and look forward to all of us making a difference in many more lives. It’s just

Oak Hill Hospital Establishes
Nursing Professional Practice Council (NPPC)
Oak Hill Hospital nursing has embraced shared governance by establishing the Nursing
Professional Practice Council (NPPC). The NPPC consists of staff nurses, charge nurses, case
managers, educator, directors and our CNO. The NPPC will define, implement and maintain the
highest standards of clinical nursing practice, whereby the goal is excellence in nursing care. The
council will serve as a means to provide nursing staff and management an opportunity for
participatory decision making in addressing issues related to nursing practice. The primary focus
of the council will be on the patient outcomes, addressing nursing quality, and clinical practice
standards, issues and policies and procedures. The NPPC provides a link among policy, practice,
governance, resources, and outcomes to ensure patient care reflects evidence-based practice.

April 27-May 1
“Patient Experience Week” was inspired by the members of the Beryl Institute
community to recognize the impact each of us has on the patient experience.
It provides a time to simply say, “Thank you.” Thank you for your contribution in
creating experiences that have a positive impact on our patients and their families.
“Thank you” may only be two small words, but they leave a lasting impression of
appreciation. My challenge to you is to say “Thank you” to your fellow associates.
When you see someone creating a positive impact on the patient experience, let
them know. Thank them.
