ANZAC COMMEMORATION
This morning our school community completed our focus on the centenary of the
Anzac landing with a commemoration ceremony. I was so proud of our students
as they walked respectfully along the Avenue of Honour (Drummond Street) into
Logie Street and through the memorial gates that were constructed at the end of
the First World War.
The ceremony consisted of an address by Rod Osborne – President of Oakleigh/
Carnegie RSL, readings from our students, songs from our choir and concluded
with the planting of a Gallipoli Oak – propagated from seeds brought home from
Gallipoli from a digger 100 years ago. As well as concentrating on the historical
significance, our students have also learnt about hope, bravery, empathy and
forgiveness. The messages left by students on our memorial gates reflect feelings
of gratitude.
NEPAL EARTHQUAKE
I am sure, like me, you felt utter horror and sadness on the news that a massive
earthquake hit Nepal on Saturday afternoon leaving thousands of people dead, and
others losing homes and all their belongings. We have seven students in our school
whose families immigrated from this area. One of those families, with a connection to
a Nepalese organisation ‘Victorians stand together for Nepal’, is organising collections
of basic needs for victims in this dire situation.
They have asked our school community for help by donating clothing, blankets,
sleeping bags and shoes which will be sent to those in such dire circumstances in
Nepal. Please send items you can donate to school by FRIDAY MORNING 1ST MAY for
collection.
UPDATE ON GAS
This year a number of people have commented they smell gas around the basketball
courts. About a month ago I called the gas company to inspect the site with a gas
detector but they found no trace.
Last week, after more reports, I further investigated and a specialist gas detector
company did find minor traces of gas outside the building. Despite over 20 man hours
of further investigation, including digging through concrete behind the basketball
towers, no further gas has been detected. The gas lines run under large slabs of
concrete around the perimeter of the basketball courts making investigation very
difficult. The specialist company is expecting new, highly advanced equipment to arrive
in a couple of weeks which may be more successful.

7pm: Positive Education Parent Forum
I have been recently informed this situation may have been in existence for many
years. It seems this leak is minor in nature and quite intermittent. A barrier will
remain in place around the digging site until the further investigation is complete.

Oakleigh Primary School Memorial Gates
In May 1924 a public meeting was held to discuss building Memorial
Gates at our school to remember pupils who had died fighting in the
Great War.
On 9th December 1924 it was “proposed that gates be erected facing
the centre of Euston Road”. At the time, the main entrance to the
school was on Warrigal Road. The school fence was a small wooden
fence. The gates were made from iron and were designed by a local
architect, Henry Berry who also designed the Oakleigh Soldier’s Hall
(RSL?).
A special ceremony was held and the names of all the former pupils
who fought in the war were hand-written in ink in a special book, called
the Roll of Honour. There are 139 names in the book. The book is
bound in red leather. We still have this book today.
Our school gates are an important historical symbol and a picture of
the gates is on our school logo. When the school turned 100 years old
in 1975 a special medal was struck and another in 2000 when the
school turned 125 years old. The medal features the gates on one side.
In 1980 a truck collided into the gates and so new gates were built and
their position moved to the corner of Logie Street and Warrigal Road.
They were not, however, used as an entrance to the school. A special
ceremony was held on 9th November 1980 to re-dedicate the Memorial
Gates.
In 2005 the gates were moved to Logie Street so that they could once
again be opened up for the community to use as an entrance to the
school. New brick pillars were built to accommodate the gates.

The 50 word story challenge
Students in Year 5 area were given the challenge of writing a story with the
approximate length of 50 words. 50 word stories are often more challenging to
write than longer stories, as the focus has to be very specific and often limited to a
single object or event. Often a twist or humour is used and punctuation is carefully
considered. The following samples are just a few of the fabulous finished products.
THE CHASE
“AAAAAH!” I screamed. “Somebody help me! Somebody! Please!”
I was nearly scared to death. The werewolf was about to eat me alive! But luckily, the hunter was riding on
his horse at that moment and scared the wolf away. “Thanks. You just saved my life,” I said.
Relieved, I hopped off the stage to take my sweaty costume off.

THE GREAT ESCAPE
My heart beats. Where is he? He was just behind me. I hear footsteps. Which way are they heading? No
idea. Which way do I run? Left? Right? I run left. I stumble.
I see his shadow loom over me. I feel his cold hand on my shoulder.
“You’re it!”
Kara
THE BIG DOG
Once. Only once did she need to take the alleyway back home. The alleyway that was littered with rubbish
and smelt like cat pee. She turned, panting heavily. Staring at the massive silhouette on the wall, she turned
back running as fast as she could, quickly checking if the creature had gone. It wasn’t the huge, sharp
teethed creature she was expecting but a tiny cute Chihuahua.

WALK IN A PARK
The leaves hung low. The park was silent except for the sound of birds. He continued on his walk. He spotted
a possum on the roof of a house. The wind blew the trees making them sway. The lights turned on and the
documentary finished.
