Term 1 Wk 7 2015
Dear Friends of Cranbrook Boat Club,
Welcome to CREW, the final newsletter for Season 2014/2015.
Sunday 1 March:
Cranbrook competed at the NSW School Boy
Head of the River Regatta at SIRC. The whole
Boat Club put in an impressive performance to
finish 2nd in the Overall Point score from 19
schools. More in Season Report.
Saturday 7 March:
Saw the End of Season Function held in the
Carter Hall. Many thanks to the Friends of Cranbrook Boat Club (FCBC) who hosted such a fabulous season finale.
Special thanks must go to outgoing Committee
Members; Paul Stenmark, Anita Nolan and Mandy Foley who have contributed so much to the
success of Cranbrook Rowing over many years .
The Annual Rowing Video achieved new heights
and gave an intriguing inside look at the forces
and impact that rowing has on those who give it
a go! Many thanks to Stuart Quin and Jay for
their unstinting and creative energy in producing
this extraordinary film.
Season Report:
Cranbrook Rowing scaled new heights this season with outstanding results at the two major
regattas it attends, the Independent Schools
Rowing Association (ISRA) Championships held
in November and the season ending New South
Wales School Boy Head of the River
(NSWSBHORR). Both were held on the Olympic
Course at Penrith Lakes.
For the second consecutive year Cranbrook
won the Overall Champion Boys School Title at
the ISRA Regatta and backed that up with a 2nd
place overall at the NSWSBHORR. As the overall
titles are calculated on the placings of all crews
in all divisions and boat classes, it is an excellent reflection of the breadth and depth of ability and potential across the entire Boat Club.
The ISRA Regatta was conducted in extremely
hot conditions that eventually saw racing curtailed when temperatures exceeded 40 degrees. That regatta saw Cranbrook win and
place in many races most notably in the Year 10
Eights where Cranbrook came 1st & 2nd and the
1st VIII who led for all bar the last 150 metres to
finish 2nd.
‘Power Down’! The 1st Year 10 VIII streak past Newington in the dying stages of the NSWSBHORR!
The NSWSBHORR 2015 will go down as possibly
the most successful day in the history of the
Cranbrook Boat Club. Cranbrook won 10 Gold
Medals (4/2014), 9 Silver Medals (6/2014), 15
Bronze Medals (9/2014) to amass 73 points and
finish second overall from nineteen schools. In
2014 Cranbrook finished in 3rd overall, 53 points
in arrears. This year a single point separated the
two top schools. Cranbrook won more medals
than any other school.
Standout crew within the Boat Club was again
the Double Scull of Jack Suriano and Mackenzie
Matters who rose to prominence last season.
Jack & Mack won Silver Medals at the NSW
State Championships as well as the NSWSBHORR. Both were members of the 1st VIII.
The Old Cranbrookians Boat Club Prize for the
boy who has contributed most toward school
rowing other than the Captain or Vice-Captain
of Boats was awarded to Will Stenmark. Will
has rowed since Year 7 and has been a member
of the 1st VIII for the last two seasons.
Success came from every age group, every boat
class and every division. This was especially
pleasing for the Year 8 oarsmen in their first year
of rowing who showed such dogged determina- The MFA Keen Memorial Prize for most imtion and proficiency in the highly technical disci- proved oarsman was awarded to Daniel

al in the 3rd Open Quad and a Bronze Medal in
the 3rd Open Single Sculls at the NSWSBHORR.
The Boat Club this season was ably led by Captain of Boats, Declan Quin and Vice-Captain of
st
Boats, Harrison Read who set the standard both 11 boys represented Cranbrook in the 1 VIII
off and on the water. Declan and Harrison were
