THURSDAY 2 APRIL TERM 1 WEEK 10 Three weeks of Term 1 training culminated with our senior teams coming up against Shore. The matches were hotly contested and despite not being able to get over the line, the fixtures gave coaches an insight into what aspects of the game need to be worked on over the coming weeks. Our Junior School players got their first hit out of the season in trials against St Aloysius. Cranbrook ensured all players in attendance got a good chunk of playing time to get them back into the swing of rugby. Good luck and safe travels to the 100 plus boys who are embarking on rugby tours over the holidays. These boys are all listed in Running Lines and I encourage them to make the most of the opportunities they have been given. Touring is a wonderful aspect of rugby where boys can improve their play on the field and become a tight knit team off it. Full tour reports and photos will be published in Term 2. Finally, I would like to congratulate Will Stenmark on his appointment as Captain of Rugby for 2015. Will was a member of the 2014 1st XV Premiership team and is also Second Prefect of Cranbrook School. Junior School Rugby Launch The junior School rugby launch was a fantastic occasion to open the season for our younger players. Ms Gamble, Mr Sampson, Mr Caniglia and 1st XV squad member Beau Mayer all addressed the crowd of eager boys and parents and inspired them for the season ahead. Following the speeches, boys took part in a knock out goal kicking competition with photos of the winners below. Many thanks to Henry Walton and other members of the Cranbrook rugby club for putting the launch together . It is easy to do; just click the link below and enter your details. It is a great way to get to know other parents and some of the kids in the Cranbrook rugby community. We usually find it works best if you sign up for an hour before or after your son plays, as you usually have to be there then anyway as they warm up or reserve for the next team. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ar5n7MHXveYbdDl2VTZRVUwyUnp4V0lNY2NoZ2 NBbXc&usp=sharing Rugby Tour Selections 2015 1st XV/2nd XV New Zealand: Jack Anderson, Reuben Antico, Lewis Barakat, Harrison Burcher, Oliver Burston, Tom Burston, Tom Chirnside, Jamie Clifton-Bligh, James Coppola, Mitch Dickins, Harry Doyle, Isaac Elias, Jack Fagan, George Gibson, Oskar Harrington, Tom Hill, Josh Kemeny, Mack Matters, Beau Mayer, Angus McNiven, Ed Negus, Michael Nolan, Matt Peppas, Joff Pilton, Declan Quin, Alexander Rathie, Ed Renton, Matt Reynolds, Darcy Searl, Jackson Senes, Alex Sprague, Finnbar Stenmark, Will Stenmark, Felix Studdy, Jack Suriano, Oskar Szangolies, Mischa Tanne, Matt Tierney, Tom Wilson 16A Canberra: Alex Antonelli, Jake Broekhuizen, Charlie Crammond, Alex Floyd, Richard Goodman, Tom Lamens, Oscar Lim-Strachan, Aaron Meyer, Spencer O’ Connor, Joe Pardey, Henry Smith, Tex Smouha-Ho, James Walker, Finn Weir, Andrew Glastras, Richard Chalik, Aaron Giesser, Tom Tilley, Connor Sprague, Peter Milios, 14A Country NSW (Cowra,Bathurst,Mudgee): Oliver Carroll, Clem Corkill, Charlie Curran, Gardner Dowling, Max Epstein, Angus Finlayson, Jude Gibbs, Hugo Hayman, Oliver Lamens, Remy Livingston, Jack McCaffery, Gabriel Meyer, Tristram Moult, Peter North, Lachlan Peters, Oscar Pintaric, Luca Polese, Marcus Roberts, Tasman Smith, Anders Steglick, Jeremy Tasker, Jake Taylor, Patrick Tagg 13A Country NSW (Cowra,Bathurst,Mudgee): William Begg, William Brown, Mitchell Caponas, William Clunies-Ross, Julian Davis, Ben Falla, Darcy Hadlow, Sebastian Harris, Max Hootman, Archie Hyles, Henry Johnson, Peter Masselos, Toby May, Jayden McLachlan, Tim Pilton, Saxon Purcell, Charles Raine, Tyler Rogers, Anthony Rowlands, Jack Ryan, Will Suriano, Alex White 12As Armidale: Mateo Baldwin, Lachlan Carroll, Will Faure, Samuel Fuller, Joseph Harnett, Harrison Hupfau, Daniel Lazerson, Sam Logan, Matt McGuiness, Louis Mercer, Sam Olliver, William Reddick, Liam Sartena, Jesse Sassoon, Samuel Tearle, Josh Waitsman, Freddie Walton, Matthew Yetton, Max Zahra *15s to tour Gold Coast in July Match Reports Saturday 28 March 1st XV 10:17 Loss Last Saturday, the Cranbrook 1st XV took on Shore in their second hit out of the season looking to build upon their win over St Pius the week before. Both teams looked to set the tone physically as was evident from the moment Shore kicked off on Hordern Oval. Throughout the first half, momentum shifted between both teams. Cranbrook put together some solid passages of play and pressured Shore in their own half. Renton consistently made good metres with the ball in hand along with solid carries around the ruck from Rathie. However, Shore remained disciplined in defence in their own half and a lack of ball retention from the Cranbrook side saw opportunities go begging. In the closing minutes of the first half, Shore continually pressured the Cranbrook line. Strong Cranbrook defence, with consistency coming from Kemeny and Matters saw Cranbrook keep the Shore side scoreless into half time. Cranbrook kicked off in the second half with the aim of playing the game in the Shore half. The half opened with Cranbrook attacking in Shore territory. Strong forward carries from Stenmark and Szangolies kept Shore honest around the ruck. However, sloppy ball retention and kicking, along with a lack of line speed in attack saw Cranbrook struggling to score. As a result, Shore capitalised and scored a long range try. Soon after, Shore continued to attack the Cranbrook line and as a result snuck a try in the corner. However, Cranbrook was far from done and once again looked to play deep in Shore territory. Aggressive running from McNiven gave Cranbrook good yardage and soon enough, Cranbrook saw Will Stenmark score a powerful try. As things started to look better for the Cranbrook boys, a lapse of concentration in defence saw Shore score a long range try. Cranbrook looked promising at times yet failed to convert this into points letting themselves down with continued errors. As a result, Shore capitalised and won 19-7. The Cranbrook team is now looking forward to its tour of New Zealand and building up towards the CAS competition. 2nd XV 10:12 Loss The 2nd XV came out very strong and managed to hold Shore off completely for the whole first quarter staying at 0 all. But due to a lack of fitness the Shore side was able to score a try. The boys were eager to score after seeing this outcome and from a penalty on their 10m line big Peter Doohan was able to charge the ball over the line to even the game up to 5-5. This rallied the boys up and brought fire to their eyes, leading to Andrew Spira running off a scrum at number 8, powering through 3 tackles to stumble over the line making it a close score of 12-10. Unfortunately after a series bad play the 2XV was unable to get the ball over the line and ended the game at 12-10. 3rd XV 0:38 Loss Cranbrook 3rd’s suffered a heavy loss against Shore on the weekend. From the starting whistle, the Shore boys were on the front foot continually keeping possession of the ball. The game provided the coaches a chance to assess individual skill, and gave the boys an opportunity to hone their skills. With a two-week break ahead, the boys will return fresh for a new term of rugby. 16A 12:19 Loss After a tough week of training, the 16s boys were keen to prove that they deserved their spot in the side. As a result, the boys came out determined and enthusiastic. However, Cranbrook struggled to keep possession of the ball, and when they did, they lacked structure and organisation from the backline. The lack of communication was another factor that lead to a number of opposition tries. Nevertheless, there were many positive outcomes that can be taken from the game, these include; strong ball carries from Stenmark and Glastras, which led to the only two tries that Cranbrook scored. As well as this, the team also showed gritty defense and an improvement in the lineouts. Junior School Trials v St Aloysius Junior School rugby kicked off their trials on Saturday with all age groups fielding one team against St Aloysius. It was a great way to start the season with all players in attendance getting plenty of game time. The trials allowed coaches to identify key areas to work on at training and players the opportunity to blow out cob webs ahead of the Term 2 IPSHA season. All players are encouraged to attend the Junior School Rugby Camp which commences on Hordern next Tuesday – Friday. Details of this camp are available on Cranbrook Connect. Weights Centre Opening Times The weights centre will be open during the holidays at the following times: Wednesday 8th April 11am-1pm Friday 10th April 11am-1pm Monday 13th April 11am-1pm Wednesday 15th April 11am-1pm Friday 17th April 11am-1pm Primary School 7s Tournament Report Last Thursday the U12s went out to Latham Park to play a 7s tournament. Cranbrook entered two teams with 22 boys showing up for the day. Cranbrook 1 played three pool games against: Bronte PS, St Brigids and Moriah winning each one convincingly playing some very good running rugby. Cranbrook 2 only played two pool games, the boys finished second in their group having come back to win against Scots from 3 – 1 down to 5 – 4 this was a great display of fight and commitment to the end. Unfortunately they lost the next game to St Charles. As a result Cranbrook 1 played the other winners of the other two groups. They clinically put away St Charles and then unfortunately in their last game they conceded a score in the last play which meant they drew to St Therese, but overall still qualified first. The Cranbrook 2 team also played a further two games and due to the unlucky draw played two games back to back with the harder of the two played first. Cranbrook 2 ran Moriah close but missed out by one score, similarly against St Brigids it was a tight game but unluckily went down with fitness being a big factor. But overall it was a great start to the 2015 season and congratulations to all the boys in both teams for a great day of sevens. Rugby Handbook The 2015 Rugby Handbook is now available for viewing on Cranbrook Connect. This document is the first port of call for any questions regarding Cranbrook Rugby. It outlines things such as training and playing uniforms, protective equipment, 1st XV support as well as highlighting all Cranbrook 1st XV Captains and those Cranbrookians that have gone on to represent the country at Schoolboy and Wallaby level. The second half of the handbook is a High Performance Manual which is a must read for all players as they prepare for the season ahead.
