1 GENERAL
a) These Sailing Instructions (SIs) provide specific details for the Round the Isle of Wight (RIOW)
Race and apply in conjunction with the SORC 2015 Notice of Race including General Conditions,
version 1.1.
b) Particular attention is drawn to the Port of Southampton Byelaws, the Precautionary Area, and
the exclusion zone associated with the new Cowes breakwater.
c) Yachts shall not anchor or kedge within the area defined by the two lines denoting power cables
and gas pipes between Stone Point and Gurnard Bay as shown on Admiralty chart 2036.
d) All positions given use WGS84 and are approximate. All times are in BST.

3 CLASSES AND START TIMES
a) Classes and class flags are as follows
Class 1
IRC-rated boats with TCC of 0.995 or higher
NP1 and SORC pennant
Class 2
IRC-rated boats with TCC of 0.994 or lower
NP2 and SORC pennant
Class 3
Boats without an IRC rating
NP3 and SORC pennant
Each yacht shall carry her class and SORC pennants on her backstay.
b) It is intended to give a time check on VHF at 30 minutes before the first expected start. This will
normally be GPS time; however, in the event of discrepancy, the time announced by the RC will
take priority.
c) Starts will use a 5-4-1-go sequence. Anticipated times are shown below:

d) Subject to entries, starts may be combined. This will if possible be notified via SMS or email by
2000 on the evening before the race and will be announced on VHF after the time check and at 20
and 15 minutes before the first start.

e) Starting signals and recalls will be made on VHF and not signalled visually, changing RRS 26, 29
and 30.

IDENTITY GATE
No earlier than 40 minutes before the first scheduled start, each yacht, as draft permits, must
pass between the beach and the mooring buoys in the vicinity of the starting line in an East to
West direction with the skipper wearing a lifejacket and harness and receive visual
acknowledgement.
5 COURSE
a) The start line is between a flagstaff flying a SORC flag and Gurnard Buoy (3U). The flagstaff is
behind the JOG race officer’s box about 50 metres to the east of the New Holmwood Hotel, Egypt
Point, Cowes.
b) In addition to the Isle of Wight, the course uses marks listed on the SCRA Solent Mark Designations
alphabetical list, Version 2, dated 04 February 2015, a copy of which is available on
www.SCRA.org.uk.
c) It is intended to send the course via SMS, if possible by 2000 on the evening before the race, and
to announce the course on VHF after the time check. In exceptional circumstances, the course
may differ from that given out the previous evening.
d) The course will be one of the following.
Course A: Start to East
Round Isle of Wight to starboard
Course B: Start to West
Round Isle of Wight to port
Pass Snowden Buoy (32) to Starboard
Round the Needles Lighthouse (1L) to Port (be
aware of the off lying rocks and wreck)
Pass Horse Sand Fort (6B) to Port
Round St Catherine’s Point* to Port
Round Bembridge Ledge Buoy (6F) to Starboard
Round Bembridge Ledge Buoy (6F) to Port
Round St Catherine’s Point* to Starboard
Pass Horse Sand Fort (6B) to Starboard
Round the Needles Lighthouse (1L) to Starboard
(be aware of the off lying rocks and wreck)
Finish when Snowden Buoy (32) is within
100 metres and bears 200° magnetic i.e., pass
Snowden to Port
Finish between the flagstaff flying a SORC flag
(see Section 5a) and Gurnard Buoy (3U)
Course C
If rounding the Isle of Wight is not appropriate in the prevailing or forecast conditions, an alternate
course may be set suitable for the conditions on the day.
*St Catherine’s Point is in position 50o 34.54N, 01o 17.87 W
6 FINISHING AND SHORTENING COURSE
a) There is no time limit.
b) Competitors must take their own finish time.
c) Amending RRS 32.2, ‘SORC RACE CONTROL’ or a nominated competitor may shorten the course at
the Needles Lighthouse (IL), at St Catherine’s Point, or at Bembridge Ledge Buoy (6F), by
announcement on VHF identifying the new finish mark and bearing. In this event, take your own
time when the finish mark is at the required bearing.
d) You are reminded that bearings are taken from the normal helming position.

DECLARATION, RETIREMENT AND REPORTING
See Notice of Race including General Conditions Section 14.
8 SCORING, RESULTS AND PRIZES
a) Results will be announced at the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club (Royal Ocean Racing Club Cowes
clubhouse) at 19.30 or as soon after that as possible, and will be published on the SORC website.
b) Prizes will be awarded for individual classes and overall.
The overall winner on corrected time under IRC wins “The Anticipation Cup”.
The first IRC boat on the water wins the Watermark Trophy.
There will be a prize for the first Rookie under IRC.
