Congregation Ohev Shalom The Entire Community is invited to the Edward S. Ackerman Scholar-in-Residence 2015 Weekend April 24th & 25th featuring Dan Kaufman and his group Barbez The weekend will begin with an Israeli style Shabbat dinner on Friday night. (details to come) At Shabbat Services on Friday night and Saturday morning, Dan will discuss the history, persecution and achievements of the Roman Jewish community. He will present the origins and preservation of their music as well as his research in Rome. He will also discuss the connection of Italian Jewish resistance during the Second World War to the wider resistance movement in Italy during that time. At a concert on Saturday night, Barbez will play the mysterious, beguiling music of the Roman Jewish community. The concert is free and open to the public, followed by a dessert reception. Barbez, formed in the late 1990s in Brooklyn, NY weaves a mosaic of avant-rock, old world cabaret, Eastern European folksong and contemporary classical music into a uniquely beautiful and personal soundtrack. The Dr. Edward S.
