Third, fourth and fifth graders annually participate in the Ohio Achievement Assessment and End of
Year tests. The tests are given to all Ohio students to measure students’ knowledge of various subjects.
These assessments help Oak Hills to assess overall achievement of our students, schools and rigor of
our instruction. In order to help your child put testing in perspective, remind them that this yearly
“check-up” highlights their overall strengths and identifies areas of improvement. The Springmyer
staff wants every student to perform at his or her highest level. Parents, you can help your child by
doing the following:
1.) Make sure your child gets plenty of sleep.
2.) Be certain your child eats a healthy, well-balanced breakfast and takes any daily medications.
3.) Have your child to school by 8:30 a.m.
4.) Please do your best to avoid scheduling appointments for your child on testing days.

As a community service project, S.M.A.SH. (Springmyer’s Movers and Shakers) will be collecting Pop Tabs to
donate to Cincinnati’s Ronald McDonald House. We’re helping keep families together when it matters most,
and we’re teaching our students the value of recycling! Ronald McDonald House provides a “home away from
home” for the families of critically ill children seeking medical treatment at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital
Medical Center. Pop tabs are recycled to earn money to help provide all the comforts of “home” to these
families. Students can bring pop tabs to the school office where each grade level will have a bucket. The
grade level with the most pop tabs brought in will win an extra hour of recess. Pop tabs will be collected from
April 20 - May 12. Thank you for your support!

SAVE THE DATE FOR LITERACY NIGHT
May 26, 2015 6:00 to 8:30 pm
April 11, 2015
Dear Community Partner:
YOUR MISSION SHOULD YOU ACCEPT IT:
To build a structure that weighs less than 75 grams and can hold 10 pounds. Next, remove
as much weight from this structure while still holding the 10 pounds to earn maximum points.
Wait...one more thing...It can only be made with wood, glue and playing cards. We also
want you to integrate the weight removal into a performance that includes a prop or set
piece that transforms. Sound IMPOSSIBLE….? It is not, thanks to Destination Imagination.
The Destination Imagination program encourages teams of learners to have fun, take risks,
focus and frame challenges while incorporating STEM (science, technology, engineering,
and mathematics), the arts and service learning. Participants learn patience, persistence,
flexibility, ethics, respect for other’s ideas, and the collaborative problem solving process.
This is exactly what seven 5th graders from the Oak Hills School District (The D.I.
Diamonds) have done. They have prepared for six months and produced a dynamic solution
to the Destination Imagination challenge referenced above. One other thing that should be
noted, all parents sign a non-interference policy, simply no adult help. Team Managers are
there with the team to help guide the process but the solution is 100% the work of the
students. Their creative solution includes a full presentation set in Ancient Egypt that
demonstrates depth in research, thought and design. It includes a pyramid made of boxes
that appears to be bricks on the ground and through weight, pulleys and counterbalance,
transforms into a full pyramid with a column and hieroglyphics.
The D.I. Diamonds won highest honors at the Regional Competition, by placing first out of
all local school districts and being awarded Destination Imagination’s highest award for
creativity and innovation. Now, they have represented Southwest Ohio at the State
Tournament, on April 11th, taking 2nd place and winning a Renaissance Award for
innovative technical design and engineering. They were one of only six teams, out of 180,
to receive this award. Now the D.I. Diamonds will be representing the State of Ohio at the
Global competition in Knoxville, Tennessee, the week of May 18th, 2015. This is where the
challenge really begins. It will cost approximate $900 per student to attend the Global
Finals. This amount will truly cover the cost for the team members to attend and be
prepared. This does not include any team manager or family costs.
Your Mission...should you choose to accept it: To help in any way you can to financially
support The D.I. Diamonds: Erin, Ethan, Katelyn, Kristan, Natalie, Nicholas & Michael.
They have worked extremely hard to represent Oak Hills, the Southwest Ohio Region and
now are hoping to raise enough money to represent the State of Ohio on an international
stage. Any amount or assistance is appreciated. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Laura Kumler

"Enrichment Day is coming...May 15th. Be on the lookup for
volunteer opportunities in the next 2 weeks." Springmyer is in need
of plastic pop bottles for Enrichment Day. They are ones with a
plastic screw lid (not 2 litres and not water bottles). Bottles
should be rinsed and dried and sent to school with caps. The first
grade classrooms will be using them to make bird feeders, so maybe
around 90-100 are needed. Please send them to the office. Thank
you team Springmyer.
