Dead Sea Scrolls
Community lectures and field trip
A rare opportunity to hear a top expert on the Dead Sea Scrolls
and then travel to see an exhibit of the scrolls is planned by the OLA
Faith Formation Center.
Dr. Lucas Shulte will explain why these scrolls are so important
and what they tell us about the development of the Bible, both Hebrew
and Christian Scriptures. His lecture is scheduled Wednesday, April 15
at 7 p.m. Dr. Shulte comes from the Claremont School of Theology.
This presentation will be followed by a field trip to an exhibit of
the Dead Sea Scrolls at the California Science Center in Los Angeles
led by Dr. Shulte on Sunday, April 19. A limited number of tickets are
available at the group rate of $15.50 ($11.75 student rate) from Elena
Cardena at 626-3596, ext. 213. Deadline to reserve a place is April 12.
Finally, Dr. Carol Younger, veteran Bible educator, will return to
OLA for a three-part series on Bible basics planned Wednesday evenings April 22, April 29 and May 6. Watch the bulletin for details.

Divine Mercy Novena begins Friday
The Divine Mercy Novena of nine days begins on Good Friday,
concluding before Divine Mercy Sunday, April 12. OLA households
are encouraged to pray this novena at home or to join a bilingual
group at OLA on each of these days:
April 3 & 4 – Novena in the Reflection Room at 3:30 p.m.
April 5 – No communal prayer on Sunday
April 6-9 – Novena in the church at 5 p.m. before the 5:30 Mass
April 10 Friday evening celebration of Mass, novena, and private
confessions at OLA beginning at 7 p.m. This event is
part of a collaborative schedule of daily Masses at local
churches. You will find the schedule at the Welcome
Cart on the patio or vestibule of the church.

Help the OLA environment team Help make our church and auditorium places that reflect the hope
and joy of the Resurrection! Many hands are needed to prepare the
church for Holy Week. The Holy Week schedule for the team is

 Thursday, April 2 after Mass (about 9 p.m.)
 Saturday, April 4, from 9 a.m. until finished
Parishioners may donate flowers – calla lilies for Holy Thursday
and Easter lilies for Easter Sunday. Potted plants are best since they last
longer, but cut flowers are also welcome. These may be left Wednesday,
April 1, or Thursday, April 2, in the portico off the north entrance to the

Dates for Vacation Bible School
The Faith Formation Center has announced that Vacation Bible
School will be June 29 to July 3 this year from 5 to 8 p.m. The theme is
Cat. Chat, a play on the word “Catholic.” if you would like to join the

Divine Mercy Novena
This novena was revealed to St.
Faustina in a vision. The prayers
are from her diary. It is considered
a source of grace and conversion of
heart. These prayers may be said
using rosary beads as a guide for
five “decades.”
1. Make the Sign of the Cross.
2. Optional Opening Prayer:
“You expired, Jesus, but the
source of life gushed forth for
souls, and the ocean of mercy
opened up for the whole world.
O Fount of Life, unfathomable
Divine Mercy, envelop the
whole world and empty Yourself
out upon us.”
3. Pray three times: “O Blood and
Water, which gushed forth from
the Heart of Jesus as a fount of
mercy for us, I trust in You!”
4. Say the Our Father.
5. Say the Hail Mary.
6. Say the Apostles Creed.
Pray Nos. 7 and 8 five times.
7. Pray “Eternal Father, I offer You
the Body and Blood, Soul and
divinity of Your dearly beloved
Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in
atonement for our sins and those
of the whole world.”
8. Ten times pray: “For the sake of
his sorrowful Passion.”
9. Concluding Doxology prayed
three times:
“Holy God, Holy Mighty One,
Holy Immortal One, have mercy
on us and on the whole world.”
10. Optional Closing Prayer:
Eternal God, in whom mercy is
endless, and the treasury of compassion inexhaustible, look kindly upon us, and increase Your
mercy in us, that in difficult moments, we might not despair, nor
become despondent, but with
great confidence, submit ourselves to Your holy will, which
is love and mercy itself. Amen.”

Good Friday collection
Support the work of the Church in the cradle of Christianity through the Good Friday
collection. The Franciscan Order has been
custodian of the holy places, living and praying there, caring for the needs of the people
now dwelling where Christ once lived, and
charged with rendering sacred shrines accessible to
Christians the world over.
In return, the Franciscans
promise to pray for their
benefactors at daily Mass
in the Holy Land.

We enter Holy Week with a mix of emotions. Here we face contradiction. In the reading for the Gospel procession, the crowds wave palm
branches but in the Passion narrative, Jesus is whipped. We hear of the
cries of “hosanna” but also of “crucify him.” We can visualize a donkey
being brought for Jesus to ride and also his crowning with thorns. Jesus
is honored and then mocked; he rides triumphant and then is led out to
be crucified. His disciples dine with him and then betray and deny him.
In the Suffering Servant depicted in the reading from Isaiah, we can
see Jesus in his Passion. Just as did the Servant, Jesus gave his back to
those who beat him and did not shield his face from those who spat on
him.
The reading from Philippians portrays Jesus as the essence of holiness. Though God, Jesus is willing to be humble, to be obedient. Jesus
empties himself to do the will of the Father. We, too, are to empty ourselves, to turn over our being to God, to humbly be obedient to his will.
Have our Lenten practices taught us this? Will we be able to enter Easter
Time resolved to put our trust in God? Will we pray as Jesus does in the
Gospel, “Abba, Father, for you all things are possible.” – © LTP 2015
