April 2015
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
This month we are focusing on orange fruits and vegetables. Orange foods get
their color from a pigment called carotenoids. Carotenoids are an antioxidant,
and are proven to reduce risks of cancer and disease, plus improve eye sight. The
most common carotenoid we see in food is beta-carotene, which occurs in food as
Vitamin A. When making half your plate fruits and vegetables, be sure to include
orange foods as often as possible.
Orange Fruits & Veggies Fun Facts
1. Cantaloupe: This fruit is called “rock melon” in Australia
2. Peaches: In China, the peach is a sign of good luck.
3. Carrots: Carrots are grown in 5 colors: orange, red, yellow, white, and
purple
4. Mango: There are over 1,000 different varieties of this fruit.
5. Squash: Squash comes from the Native American word that means
“eaten raw”
6. Oranges: America’s first orange tree was planted in Florida in 1513.
7. Sweet Potatoes: This vegetable is a great source of vitamins B, C, D, and
iron which helps your immune system and keeps you healthy
Prayer Corner
Kids: Circle all the orange vegetables on the menu with an orange crayon or
marker. How many did you find? (Hint: Don’t forget to circle the vegetable juice!)
Lord, in this month of April, we give You thanks for Your many blessings to
us. We thank You for family, friends, food and most especially for the gift of
our faith. Amen.
