STOP LABOUR’S PLANS TO END
WEEKLY BIN COLLECTIONS
■ Labour have announced plans to end weekly bin collections and
move to fortnightly collections across large parts of Camden. I
oppose Labour’s threat to our services and local Conservatives are
fighting to retain weekly bin collections as a necessity, not a luxury.

attracting rats and urban foxes,
while messy streets threaten
our area’s beauty and amenity.
Hampstead Conservative
Councillors Andrew Mennear
and Siobhan Baillie proposed
a motion to Council calling for
the protection of weekly bin
collections, but this was voted
down by Labour.

great work of our local Conservative team. I’ll continue working with
Councillors Tom Currie and Stephen Stark and ex-Councillors Simon
Marcus and Chris Knight to help improve our community.
The local by-election’s being held to replace Simon Marcus, who’s standing down so
he can focus on representing you in Parliament if he were elected.
I’ve campaigned with Simon Marcus to defend Hampstead Heath, with Tom Currie
to protect our local pubs, with Stephen Stark to block inappropriate planning
applications, and with Siobhan Baillie to stop Tesco lorries blocking our High Street. If
elected as your Councillor, I’d continue to work with them to keep Hampstead special.

hotel plan blocked
by Councillors
■ Plans to build a hotel at 6
Streatley Place have been
blocked until Councillors can
see the impact on the area.
This is a victory for residents
who want sustainable
development for our area.
I attended the meeting at Town
Hall, where Councillors agreed to
delay the decision until they’d had
a chance to see the effect of the
application on the site.
Alain de Botton’s plan to build a
hotel in the heart of the village
provoked outrage from residents.
The design is out-of-keeping with the
area, while both the building itself
and its construction would have
affected people living nearby.
Local residents in New Court
commented that it would affect
their quality of life and invited
the developer to meet with
them. English Heritage raised
concerns about the application and
recommended amendments - but
Camden council staff backed the
plan anyway.
Hampstead Conservative Councillor
Stephen Stark told the Council
meeting, “Camden planners think
their opinion trumps that of English
Heritage. It’s just not acceptable.”

PUB DEMOLITION ADDS
IMPETUS TO SAVE LOCALS
■ Local residents have been stunned by news that the Carlton Tavern
in Maida Vale has been illegally torn down by developers: raising
concerns that pubs in Hampstead might face a similar fate.
The development was denied planning
permission last year, yet was torn down
regardless: just one day before the pub
was to become a Listed building. The pub
was the only building on Carlton Vale that
survived the Blitz - but is now in ruins.
Local Conservatives have fought to
preserve our pubs across Hampstead.
With residents, we’ve secured Asset of
Community Value status to protect the
Old White Bear and Magdala.
However, the fate of the Carlton Tavern
shows that the fight to protect our pubs is
not over, and I will keep working with our
local team and residents to help them
survive and thrive.

Dams work disturbance hits our Heath
■ Construction work began last week on the Hampstead Heath
ponds - causing traffic, noise, and disruption to our Heath.
The Dams works will involve thousands of lorry movements on the Heath, disturbing
its tranquility and undermining its beauty. Over 1,000 letters of objection and a
14,000-signature petition were ignored by Camden Council in granting permission
for the works, which will leave the Heath scarred.
With Simon Marcus and a huge number of residents, I have been strongly opposed
to the Dams project. If elected to represent you, I would fight to continue Simon’s
work and prevent further unnecessary developments affecting our Heath.
