Financial Summary
April 26, 2015
Weekly Collection
Weekly Budget
+/- for the week
$ 18,414.00
- $ 17,800.00
$
614.00
The estimated weekly collection needed to maintain and operate
our parish buildings, ministries, programs and salaries is $17,800.
Well, it appears that spring has finally arrived. I was not expecting to turn on the heat last week
but it now seems that spring is here to stay – until summer, that is!
We are in the midst of “First Holy Communion” season, which will last until May 30. I ask your
prayers for our children receiving Jesus for the first time. As you know, the vast majority of us
received our First Holy Communion in the second grade (7 or 8 years old, depending on birthdays). This was not always the case. In fact, it has really only been true for the past 100 years or
so. Saint Pope Pius X was pope from 1903 – 1914. It was Saint Pope Pius X who lowered the
age for the reception of communion to the “age of reason.” Prior to Pius X, one received First
Holy Communion at the age of 12 years old. Pope Pius, however, thought the Eucharist was so
important that one should receive it as soon as possible. Pope Pius X said, “The safest and surest
way to heaven is the reception of Holy Communion.” Please pray that our First Holy Communicants will recognize the awesomeness of the Eucharist and receive Jesus every week at Sunday
Mass.
Pastor’s Letter
Dear Parishioners:
As you know from the news, there is tremendous violence in the Middle East and Africa. In particular, Muslim extremists have targeted Christians (overwhelmingly Catholic or Orthodox).
Many Christians are literally dying for their faith. Sadly, the United States government has been
largely silent on the persecution of these Christians. A few months ago, the ISIS terrorists beheaded 21 Egyptian Coptic Christians working in Libya. Our government issued a statement
lamenting the deaths of the 21 Egyptian “citizens”; the US government never mentioned that
they were murdered because of their faith!
What can we do? PRAY! Every Sunday, we will offer a special intention at Mass for our persecuted brothers and sisters. But we need to pray more. Offer up a decade of the Rosary for peace;
offer up your Holy Communion at Mass for our persecuted Christians. Make a point to do this!
We cannot underestimate the power of prayer. For decades, we prayed for the conversion of
Russia and the end of atheistic communism. We now need to storm heaven with another righteous intention.
Don’t forget the Catholic Ministries Appeal. Our goal is $107,300. So far, we have $51,784 in
paid pledges. That is from 383 donors. The Catholic Ministries Appeal is an opportunity for us
to help the good work of the Diocese (Catholic Charities, Catholic hospitals, Catholic schools,
etc.) and the good work of our Parish as well. When we reach our goal, the parish will receive
over $21,000 as a rebate for having reached our goal! As I said at Mass, it is like “double bonus
coupons”; your pledge helps the great mission of the Diocese and the Parish at the same time.
Also, don’t forget our Parish Pilgrimage to Lourdes and Paris. I think it will be a great pilgrimage, and I encourage everyone to consider coming; ask your friends as well! I find Lourdes to be
particularly inspiring. Please see another section in the bulletin for details.
Remember: Together, we can do something beautiful for God!
In Christ,
Fr. Brian

Respect Life Ministry
Now and at the Hour of Our Death
Catholic Guidance for End of Life Decision Making
Talking about death and dying can be difficult and uncomfortable, yet
perhaps no conversations are more profound or necessary for all of us.
End-of-life decisions are among the most challenging we will ever face
as individuals and families and as members of society. Residents of
New York State must be particularly vigilant as we seek to oppose any
legislation that promotes assisted suicide.
The bishops of the United States teach us:
“Catholics should be leaders in the effort to defend and uphold the
principle that each of us has a right to live with dignity through
every day of our lives. As disciples of one who is Lord of the
living, we need to be messengers of the Gospel of Life. We
should join with other concerned Americans, including disability
rights advocates, charitable organizations and members of the
healing professions, to stand for the dignity of people with serious
illnesses and disabilities and promote life-affirming solutions for
their problems and hardships. We should ensure that the families
of people with chronic or terminal illness will advocate for the
rights of their loved ones, and will never feel they have been left
alone in caring for their needs. The claim that the “quick fix” of
an overdose of drugs can substitute for these efforts is an affront
to patients, caregivers and the ideals of medicine.”
When we grow old or sick and we are tempted to lose heart, we should be surrounded by people
who ask, “How can we help?” We deserve to grow old in a society that views our cares and needs
with a compassion grounded in respect, offering genuine support in our final days. The choices
we make together now will decide whether this is the kind of caring society we will leave to future generations. We can help build a world in which love is stronger than death.
To Live Each Day with Dignity: A Statement on Physician-Assisted Suicide
Find out more by reading the New York State’s Catholic Bishops’ document, Now and at the
Hour of our Death by visiting catholicendoflife.org and www.nyscatholic.org.
“My soul ... You knew full well; nor was my frame unknown to You when I was made in
secret ... Your eyes have seen my action; in Your book they are all written; my days were
limited before one of them existed .”
~ Psalm 139:15-16

Mother’s Day Novena
Please don’t forget to turn in your Mother’s Day Mass Remembrance envelope which you
received in the parish mailing. It is a nice way to show our love and respect for our mothers
by praying for them at Holy Mass. All the names on the envelopes will be placed in front of
the Tabernacle as a concrete reminder of our prayers for them.
Mother’s Day Candles
Once again, we are offering a Loving Candle which will be placed in the
Tabernacle area and lit on Mother’s Day weekend. This symbolic light
will remain in the Tabernacle area for the life of the candle (approximately
a week).
This is a beautiful way to honor our living and deceased loved ones. The
Loving Candles will be available after all the Masses this weekend and at
the Parish Office (Rectory) during the week for a donation of $10. If you
have any questions, please feel free to contact us at 661.3224, ext. 121.

how our faith fills us and gets us through our lives. We welcome all women to come and share
how God made us special and how we bring that into our world. We meet on the first Thursday of
each month in the Spiritual Life Center at 9:30am. Your story is what we need to hear. Our next
meeting is on May 7. For more information, call Vita Scorcia at 669.4717.
Holy Name Society
The Holy Name Society invites the men of our parish, young and old, to join us. We can use the

Society meets on the second Sunday of each month. Our next meeting will be on Sunday, May 10.
We come together to pray the Rosary at 7:40am in the Church and the meeting will follow the

Today’s Second Collection benefits our Catholic Elementary
schools and the Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation.
Long Island’s Catholic Elementary Schools and

Diocese with a high profile expression of our
common mission to evangelize. Our schools

buildings or who sees one of our children in
uniform has to say to themselves that the Roman
Catholic Faith is alive and relevant.
We are grateful to you, the parishioners of the Diocese, for your support of our schools and students.
Thank you in advance for your continued support for our schools, and for your support of the

Growing with the Gospel
Sharing the Gospel
Put a brand new light bulb in a lamp. Turn the
lamp on. It shines brightly. Now, unplug the
lamp. The lamp goes dark. It might be a nice
lamp. It might have a new light bulb. Yet, without being plugged in to electricity, the lamp
cannot shine. In today's Gospel, Jesus is the
vine and you are a branch. As long as you are
attached to Jesus, your faith can grow fruit like
love, kindness and gentleness. If you break
away from Jesus, your faith will die, and you
will not grow any fruit. Stay plugged in to
Jesus, so you can shine. Stay connected to
Jesus, so your faith can grow fruit.
Mission for the Week
Read Galatians 5:22-23 with your family. Write down the nine
different kinds of fruit that will grow from your faith, when
you stay connected to Jesus.
