Giving to Catholic Charities transforms the lives of people in need and is a tremendous way to respond to the bounty of God’s gifts in our own lives. Before ascending, He commanded us to live and preach the Gospel. We run a relay race of faith. Each family generation hands on the baton of faith to the next generation, teaching by word and example who Jesus is and how to live the Gospel. Don’t drop the baton of faith! FIFTY YEARS! Our Lady of Grace is celebrating it’s Golden Jubilee this year. It all begins on June 14th with Bishop Lennon celebrating the 11:00 Mass. The statues of St. John Paul II and Blessed Teresa of Calcutta should be installed in time for the celebration. Thanks to everyone that has contributed toward them. We are still accepting donations. God bless you for your generosity. DID YOU KNOW? It is an extremely rare case when abortion is required to save the mother’s life. Of course, when two lives are threatened and only one can be saved, doctors must always save that life. However, abortion for the mother’s life and abortion for the mother’s health are usually not the same issue. Since every abortion kills an innocent human being, it is morally abhorrent to use the rare cases when abortion is necessary to save the life of the mother as justification for the millions of on demand “convenience” abortions. HELP! We STILL need one more man or woman to join our church cleaning crew. You would be on a schedule with three other people to clean Wednesday mornings once every six weeks. It only takes about an hour to clean. Please call the office, if you are interested. FOOD PANTRY Your generous donations provide help for many needy families. In this time of economic uncertainty this ministry is a lifeline for many. Our Food Pantry can always use a variety of items. At this time we are especially in need of: cereal, coffee, hand soap, jam/jelly, peanut butter, rice and laundry soap. You can drop off your items in the church vestibule or at the church office. Please make sure when dropping off items that they are not expired, and preferably have a few weeks to a month shelf life. Not everything is given out the week we receive it. Thank you! The tradition of leaving crosses began after an uprising of the Polish and Lithuanians against the Russian tsar was squelched in 1831. Relatives of the dead rebels, with no bodies to bury, instead left crosses on this hill to commemorate their fallen. During the Soviet occupation of Lithuania from 1944 to 1991, the Hill of Crosses became a symbol of defiance against the Communist regime. Three times the Soviets bulldozed the hill, but after each time both locals and pilgrims once again would erect crosses on the hill. When crosses continued to appear the soviet authorities stationed KGB agents around the site to stop people sneaking through the forest to plant crosses. In 1991, when Lithuania acquired its long awaited independence, the hill became a dual symbol of Lithuania's Catholic faith and her national identity. Pope John Paul II visited in 1993 to dedicate the site. A stone marker at the foot of the hills bears his words, "Thank you, Lithuanians, for this hill of crosses which testifies to the nations of Europe and to the whole world the faith of the people of the land." Today there are about 200,000 crosses at the site, excluding carvings and shrines, made out of everything from wood to metal. A hermitage has been erected nearby to assist visitors and the faithful are welcome to add their contribution to this unusual Hill. Today, the crosses number in the hundred of thousands. This place attracts both locals and tourists. Walking among numerous crosses, some decorated with devotion to loved ones, one can hear the rosaries rattle in the wind. This little hillock has long been a potent symbol of suffering, hope, devotion, and the undefeated faith of the Lithuanian people. He was christened Pascau in honor of the feast. As a youth he was a shepherd for his father. Paschal would carry a book with him and beg passersby to teach him the alphabet and to read. As he toiled in the fields he would read. In a vision he was told to enter the nearby Franciscan community. He became a lay brother in 1564. Paschal practiced rigorous asceticism and spent many nights in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. Paschal spent his life as porter, cook, gardener or official beggar. He was careful to observe the vow of poverty. He would never waste any food of anything that was given for use of the friars. He gave generously to the poor that came to the door. He was known for his unfailing courtesy. Although poorly educated he had a great love for the Blessed Sacrament. He defended the doctrine of the Blessed Sacrament against the Calvinists. Many people sought Paschal’s wise counsel. Paschal died on May 17, 1592. He is the patron saint of Eucharistic Congresses and Eucharistic Associations. Elaine Sustersic & Jamison Swope I
