Bonus challenge: Mobile Action Team for BOOKS April 20-May 12 THE CHALLENGE: Just about everyone has a smart phone these days—and if you’re like us, you keep it by your side at practically all times. ONE’s Mobile Action Team is a new and exciting way to engage people in the fight against extreme global poverty. Members receive breaking news, have the opportunity to take advocacy actions fast, and do it all on the go - right when it counts, all via text message. We’re calling on you to help build ONE’s Mobile Action Team in order to strengthen our grassroots network and keep students engaged in anti-poverty advocacy over the summer and after they graduate. Your bonus challenge? Get as many people—with a focus on graduating seniors—as possible to sign up for the ONE Mobile Action Team. Anyone can join by texting "CAMPUS" to 877-877. We know, we know. This bonus challenge falls during a difficult time in the semester when many of you are pulling all-nighters studying for finals and stalking the registration website to get into filled-up classes at the last minute. While we can’t help you with those things, one thing we can help you with is how to pay for your books next semester—and it’s out of this sentiment that we decided to reward you for your hard work on the ONE Campus Bonus Challenge by helping you buy your books for next semester. Read on to get the details! BRIGHT IDEAS: Canvass. Every campaigner’s favorite activity: classic canvassing. Designate a couple days and time periods for a canvassing blitz. Then, get as many people as possible to stand on the quad, outside academic buildings, and other high-traffic spots on campus with a clipboard and sign-up sheet during the designated times. Stop passers-by, tell them about ONE, and ask them to join the Mobile Action Team. Easy as that! After all, you’re not asking for their money—you’re asking for their voice. Table. You know the drill. Table in a popular spot on campus like the student center, and ask those who approach your table to sign up for the Mobile Action Team. Try incentivizing people to join by giving away a sweet or ONE swag in exchange for signing up. Target seniors. Ask seniors to join the Mobile Action Team via senior email lists, canvass door-todoor in senior student housing, and tap into senior-only events happening in the last week of the semester. THE PRIZES: EACH school that signs up 2% of their student population to the ONE Mobile Action Team with at least half of those people being seniors will receive: $100 in Amazon or campus bookstore gift cards* *to be split equally between canvassing team members EACH school that signs up 5% of their student population to the ONE Mobile Action Team with at least half of those people being seniors will receive: $100 in Amazon or campus bookstore gift cards* $100 in Starbucks gift cards* *to be split equally between canvassing team members EACH school that signs up 10% of their student population to the ONE Mobile Action Team with at least half of those people being seniors will receive: $300 in Amazon or campus bookstore gift cards* $100 in Chipotle gift cards* $100 in Starbucks gift cards* *to be split equally between canvassing team members Canvassing Guide for Mobile Action Team on College Campuses Canvassing isn’t as intimidating as it seems. You’re not asking for someone’s money, you’re asking for their contact information (specifically their cell phone number) so that we at ONE can reach out to them via text so they can take an instant action whether they’re grabbing lunch or racing between classes. Below is a script for you to use to explain exactly what it is you’re asking for and some ideas you can try out while on campus. Some canvassing reminders: - Work in teams. This challenge is designed for a team of canvassers to “storm the campus” and get as many Mobile Action Team sign-ups as possible. - Do what makes you most comfortable. That goes for where you go to get phone numbers and how you explain ONE’s Mobile Action Team. - Not all tactics work at every campus. Residential campuses will have a little easier of a time to grow their MAT’s but a commuter campus might need to stick to traditional canvassing methods. - You’re still representing ONE and the issues we work on haven’t changed. MAT is another way for us to reach new and existing ONE members. - You can always reach out to the ONE Campus team if you have questions. o Jen Fraser – [email protected], 978.884.4674 o Gordon Wong – [email protected], 617.997.9662 o Brandi Geurkink – [email protected], 803.240.5160 Canvassing Logistics Canvassing script Hi there – I’m [insert name] and I’m a member of ONE here at [insert campus]. ONE’s an international organization fighting extreme poverty and preventable disease specifically in subSaharan Africa. I’m going around today asking students to join ONE’s Mobile Action Team which is a way for ONE to be in touch via text so you can take an action, like calling your elected official to vote “no” on a bill that would cut poverty-fighting programs, right away. We’ll only be texting you a couple times during the year. How to join: 1. Text “CAMPUS” to 877-877. 2. You’ll immediately receive a text thanking you for signing up and asking you for your school name. Please respond back using your school’s official name. Example: “University of Arizona” or “University of Texas at El Paso”. 3. You’ll receive a series of texts after that asking you for your graduation year and email address. Each question that you respond to will help ONE communicate with you better so that you can continue to take meaningful, poverty-fighting advocacy actions. Calculating Your Canvassing Time Having a clear and calculated plan before you canvas can make your team’s efforts more effective. This will help you determine how much human effort it actually takes to sign up 2%, 5%, or 10% of your campus to the Mobile Action Team. To calculate an estimated canvassing plan, follow the steps below. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Use the “Goals Chart” on the following page to find your goal Multiply your goal by 3 to get the total number of people that you need to talk to (this is using an estimate that 1/3 of the people you talk to will actually agree to sign up for MAT) Multiply the number by 90 to get the total seconds that need to be spent canvassing (this is using an estimate that the “canvassing pitch” will take about 90 seconds to execute) Divide that number by 60 get the total estimated minutes that need to be spent canvassing Divide that number by 60 again to get the total estimated hours that need to be spent canvassing Divide that number by the number of team members you have The remaining number is approximate canvassing hours that need to be spent per person to reach your goal! Remember to consider how your team will communicate metrics with each other while canvassing. This will help you to identify how many sign-ups each person got during their shift, and how many of those people are seniors (you’ll need to ask them this). Work as a team to determine what the best way of communicating this will be (tallying, phone check-ins each day, etc.). FAQ’s - Will ONE spam me? o No, we’ll text you only a few times during the year to tell you about big news or to ask you to take an immediate action. Also, ONE doesn’t sell your phone number to outside vendors, so it’ll only be ONE’s to use. - Can I opt out? o Yes, if you decide that enough is enough then you can remove yourself from our list. - Does Mobile Action Team make a difference? o Yes it does! A couple of weeks ago Senator Rand Paul submitted an amendment that would slash vital foreign aid programs ONE has been advocating on for years. ONE members from around the country took to the phones to make calls to their Senators asking them to vote no on the Paul Amendment. Many members called their Senators after receiving an email from ONE but just as many members called their Senators after receiving a text via Mobile Action Team. It was quick and easy and the amendment failed! Tactics/best practices for canvassing: Dorm Storm A fast and easy way to add people to ONE’s Mobile Action Team is to break into teams and literally go door to door to ask students to join MAT. Pick a night and time you know students will most likely be in their dorm and go door knocking! You’ll be surprised how many people you can get to sign up if you can dedicate an hour or two to it. o You might to make sure the Resident Assistants in the building know you’re coming. Remember, you’re not asking for money—just asking people to join a movement. o Someone’s not in? You might want to take a “leave behind” flyer for them telling them you were by and giving them information about joining MAT. Tabling It’s a tried and ultimately true method of getting people to join into any cause. By now, you’ve done a million tabling events and the same tactics you’ve used to gather tweets, letters, and phone calls can be applied here. The ask: Join ONE’s Mobile Action Team to take actions wherever you might be. Set up shop in the most populated area on campus and let the people come to you. Take advantage of campus-wide events (concerts, end-of-year events, etc.) Is there a big event on campus (whether it’s an entertainer or academic) happening soon? You know there’ll definitely be students attending. Why not volunteer to collect information for Mobile Action Team? Try canvassing before the big event near the ticket takers and ask for two minutes of their time. Go where the seniors are Go and table outside where the seniors need to pick up their cap and gown. This is an easy way to acquire their information. You can usually ask a member of your school’s administrator about the location and date of the cap and gown pickups. Of course, you’ll want to clear the hurdles of reserving a table with student programming. Join the ONE Mobile Action Team! Join the ONE Mobile Action Team!
