Another step AACO will be taking
is the formation of an audit committee. This committee will meet once a
year to review the prior year’s banking
activity, investments and the yearend
financial report. Audit committees usually consist of EC/BOD members and
interested members. The results of the
committee audit and the yearend report
will then be posted on the Members

along with AACO’s 990 income tax

The opportunity for AACO to become
more transparent and accountable will
come over time and as situations arise.
This will be a slow process but I am
committed to attaining these goals.

AACO Tax Code Change
- Now Official!
Thanks to the research, persistence and
diligence of our President Laurie HahnParrott, the AACO now has officially
been designated as a 501c(3) not-forprofit organization. Due to a serendipitous finding, we discovered that we had
been a 501c(6) for some time – also notfor-profit - but with the option to lobby,
which precluded accepting tax-deductible charitable contributions.
Now we are able to receive donations of
any amount and show potential donors
our tax-deductible status – and just in
time for the 75th anniversary celebrations!
g
ct
This opens the door for larger contributions in the future and even establishing
living will donations. This will make a
significant difference in our organization
going forward. Well done Laurie!

AACO National Meeting, 75th
Anniversary, Las Vegas Update
Greetings, all!
Host Hotel Confirmed
The big news is that we have our host
hotel confirmation from Michael Paulos of AMS and we have been assigned
to the Flamingo Hotel Las Vegas. It is
centrally located on the strip, directly
across from Caesar’s Palace. I believe
that Olivia Newton-John has a show
at the Flamingo, for all of you Grease
lovers! We have not received our room
block information or any rate information either, but our contract has been
signed.
Meeting Registration
At present, meeting registration is set
to open at the beginning of July and
continue until the end of September.
I have filled 6 of the 12 spots for the
workshops and Jennifer Lambert continues to take abstracts for evaluation/
acceptance until the beginning of May.
If you or your physician colleagues are
interested in giving a course, please
contact me at [email protected].
75th Anniversary Update
Kyle Arnoldi, Rachael Jenkins, and
I have been working with AMS on a
special 75th Anniversary logo for our
big celebration. It is now complete and
Kyle should be given the lion’s share
of the credit for a lovely design. (See
back page.) We should also thank the
American Orthoptic Journal for funding the design process.
Others on the 75th Anniversary Committee have been working hard on
giveaways, the President’s Reception,
a commemorative booklet and fundraising for our big celebration. We do also
want to encourage our physicians to be
involved in this monumental year, so
please share the excitement with them.
We always like to involve those who
support us in our meetings.

AACO Membership in the AAP
I would like to strongly encourage all
orthoptists certified by the AOC to become Affiliate Members of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on
Ophthalmology.
Congratulations to our Lancaster
Award winner Bruce Furr, Scobee
Lecturer Alex Christoff and Scobee
winner Kathleen Curtin. See more
details on pages 1, 10 and 11.
Our membership in the AAP affiliates
us with a highly respected, 60,000
member organization dedicated to
children. It gives the name Certified
Orthoptist an amplified voice and an
opportunity to be recognized.
A great thank you is due to new President Laurie Hahn-Parrott for her
diligence in sorting out our organization’s tax code so that donors are able
to deduct their charitable contributions.
See more about this on page 2.
You must submit a copy of your current
certificate of certification, and one letter
of support from an active member of the
Section on Ophthalmology confirming
that your practice is at least 50% pediatric. Membership is $30. To become a
member visit the website at www.aap.
org, scroll to bottom of page and click
on Join.
If you are already an AAP member, you
will receive renewal notification at the
time of your membership anniversary.
If you have any questions, please call
the AAP toll free number at 1-866-8432271 or email me at [email protected].
Please join.

available now on Amazon. (Pages 4,7)
Several overlapping meetings took
place in Japan starting at the end of November. Several AACO members were
fortunate enough to be there, either as
presenters, or to attend the IOA Council
of Management meetings - or both! See

News from the International Orthoptic Association
The IOA Council of Management held
its annual meeting in Kyoto, Japan,
November 28-30, 2014, in conjunction
with the XII meeting of the International Strabismological Society (ISA).
The IOA was graciously hosted by
the Japanese Association of Certified
Orthoptists (JACO).
In addition to other business, the Council entertained three bids from IOAmember countries to host the 2020 IOA
Congress. The winner was Liverpool,
England (British and Irish Orthoptic
Society), narrowly edging out San
Francisco, Calif., (AACO), and Kyoto,
Japan (JACO).
Also at the 2014 meeting, the IOA
and ISA announced the adoption of a
Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)
to strengthen the relationship between
the two organizations. The IOA and
ISA have shared interests and objectives, and both recognize the value of
collaboration. The MOU formalizes a
longstanding and collegial relationship,
and provides a framework for future
interaction.
June 1, 2015 marks the third annual
World Orthoptic Day, founded by the
IOA to promote and celebrate our profession. The holiday has really caught
on world-wide, and celebrations have
become more elaborate and noteworthy
with each year.
For 2015, in addition to the annual
Photography Contest, the IOA will hold
the first World Orthoptic Day Video
Contest! Submissions for both contests should be representative of World
Orthoptic Day and this year’s theme:
“Orthoptists providing a clear vision
for the future of eye health.” First,
second, and third place prize winners
will be announced in March. Deadline
for submissions is February 15, 2015.
Each IOA member country is strongly
encouraged to participate in the festivities by planning local and national
events and spread the word about our
field.
For more information or to assist in
planning AACO events, contact AACO
Public Relations Chair, Marlo Galli
([email protected]), or World
Orthoptic Day Task Force members
Kyle Arnoldi ([email protected]) and
Megan Sheeley (mmsheeley@hotmail.
com). Let’s truly make this a global
event this year!
The IOA launched a new website in
December, 2014 (www.internationalorthoptics.org). The site has been
completely redesigned to be easier
to navigate, more informative and
functional, as well as visually appealing. The website is now linked to IOA
social media. All AACO members are
members of the IOA and have access
to the Members Only section. Log on
with the e-mail you submitted when
you paid your AACO dues, and the site
will prompt you to create a password.
Contact IOA Secretary Katherine
Fray ([email protected] ) or
your representative, Kyle Arnoldi with
questions about website log-in.

Clinical Approach to Ocular Motility
Congratulations to Miss Ida, as she is
known by many, on the recent publication of the second edition of her
book on ocular motility.
Her newly-revised book is filled with
clinical and diagnostic pearls presented in a readable and understandable
format. Monte Del Monte, MD says
this is the key to success in the challenging field of strabismus. In her first
year as an orthoptic student, Angela
Dillon commented that she could not
have asked for a better introduction
to the field. Recent Scobee winner
Kathleen Curtin says the book is
perfect for students and residents just
starting in the field of ophthalmology.

JASA-JAPO-AAPOS Joint Meeting - Kyoto, Japan Nov. 30 - Dec. 1, 2014.
Speakers at the AACO symposium.
From left: Terra Haller, Cheryl McCarus, Pam Huston, Dr. Chie Usui and
Dr. Bruce Furr.
Several AACO members traveled to
Kyoto for the joint meeting, popularly
called TRIO, of the Japanese Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology, Japanese Association of Strabismus and
Amblyopia, along with AAPOS. The
meeting continued into the 12th International Strabismological Association
meeting held at the same venue Dec
1-4. Kyle Arnoldi presented a paper at
the ISA meeting.
The organizers for each section of TRIO
were Dr. Christie Morse for AAPOS,
Dr. Noriyuki Azuma for JAPO and
Dr.Takashi Fujikado for JASA.
The 8th symposium of the TRIO was the
AACO Symposium chaired by Cheryl
McCarus. Speakers included AACO
members: Bruce Furr (Amblyopia
Therapy), Pamela Huston (High Tech
Orthoptics), Cheryl McCarus presenting for Noelle Matta (Amblyoscope in
Diagnosis and Treatment), and Terra
Haller, (The Pre-Op Examination.) The
session concluded with a presentation
by Chie Usui, CO, PhD on the JACO
Approach to Early Detection and Treatment of Strabismus and Amblyopia. All
speakers were very well-received and
were enthusiastically questioned by
colleagues in the audience.
Let’s Celebrate as AACO turns 75!
Meanwhile another international group
present in Kyoto at the same time was
the IOA Council of Management holding a planning meeting headed by IOA
President Karen McMain with IOA
Secretary Katherine Fray. Many IOA
officers and representatives from member countries were there.
The AACO 75th Anniversary Committee
is busy planning a wonderful celebration
this year. We will remember all that we
have accomplished in the past by focusing on the history of the AACO and celebrate all that the AACO has become.
There will be special giveaways and a
spectacular gala to enjoy.
Members of the Congress Scientific
Program Committee for the upcoming
congress in Rotterdam were present and
included Chair Kyle Arnoldi who is
also AACO’s representative to the IOA,
and program committee member Carole Panton, who represented Canada as
IOA representative Jennifer Schofield
was unable to attend.
A special commemorative booklet is being produced that will have tributes to
many orthoptists from ophthalmologists,
family members and friends. A letter will
be sent out soon with instructions on how
to make a donation and submit a tribute
for inclusion in the booklet. This will be
distributed to ophthalmologists at the
AACO booth at the upcoming AAPOS
meeting in New Orleans and disseminated further before the October deadline.
Chie Usui
educates Kyle
Arnoldi on
the nuances of
shochu!
They were invited by Japanese Association of Certified Orthoptists President Chie Usui to a dinner sponsored
by JACO in honor of the IOA. Kyle
Arnoldi was given a “tutorial” on the
traditional Japanese spirit shochu, and
learned about the different types, and
how they are distilled and consumed.
[Ed: Contributions to this article by
Cheryl, Bruce, Kyle and Carole.]
There will be a special section entitled
“Who’s Who in American Orthoptics”.
We are also collecting photographs from
past years that we will display during
the scientific session. Look for further
instructions for these projects in future
Scoop bulletins.
I encourage each and every one of you
to attend the annual meeting this year in
Las Vegas. Let’s make this a meeting to
remember and be talked about for years
to come!
Rachael Jenkins, DBO, CO
75th Anniversary Chair
Other AAPOS speakers included Drs.
David Guyton, Erick Bothun, Jennifer Galvin, Mike Repka, Paul Phillips, Steve Christiansen and Alex
Christoff. Also attending the joint
meeting were Drs. Mary Louise Zimmerman Collins, Allison Jensen and
Steve Kraft.

was stimulating, energetic, edifying,
challenging, and fun! The meeting was
held at the Westin Michigan Avenue
Chicago hotel.
Saturday was intensive learning with
the varied instruction courses. Some
were at break-neck pace, such as Dr.
Andy Lee’s thyroid eye disease course,
where we were reminded about the
“FAT” scan (Family Album Tomography!) One course reviewed where our
profession started and described how it
has changed over time. Other courses
included statistics for orthoptists and
pediatric trauma related to strabismus
and amblyopia.
There were a variety of other topics such as ocular manifestations in
syndromes and their treatment options, low vision management, contrast
sensitivity testing in children, advances
and the use of technology in treating

amblyopia, an update on cerebral visual
impairment, learning disabilities and
the eyes, acute onset strabismus in children, and binocular symptoms following head injury.
We gathered for our annual business
meeting Sunday morning where we
had a professional parliamentarian in
attendance to keep our meeting flowing
smoothly. There can be no doubt we
are a family. After moments of intense
discussion and raw emotion, we came
together to pass motions and get the
work of the AACO accomplished. In
the end we all understood each other
just a little bit more.
The Sunday Leadership Luncheon and
Lecture, led by Robert F. Melendez,
MD, MBA was sponsored by AAPOS.
We are grateful for the support the

show us! Dr. Melendez told us to start
with humility and showed us that focusing on our passion, not the position,
is the way to effective leadership. He

Next we were on the buses to McCormick Place for the joint AAO/AOC/
AACO Strabismus Symposium the
topic of which was “Adult Strabismus:
Techniques to Alleviate Visual Discomfort.” This was aimed at comprehensive
ophthalmologists in the audience who
were encouraged to refer their patients
for further evaluation and shown that
much can be done to alleviate adult
diplopia. Topics included skew deviation, macular diplopia, divergence
insufficiency, and torsion. With his wife
Susan in attendance, Bruce Furr, CO,
PhD was presented with the Lancaster
Award by Ron Biernacki.
Monday morning we were back at The
Westin for the joint AAPOS/AACO
Symposium to learn more about unexplained visual loss in children. This
included testing for, and management
of, low vision plus suggestions for
evaluating factitious vision loss.
Monday afternoon, with his wife Allison Jensen, a pediatric ophthalmologist, their children and his parents in attendance, Alex Christoff gave the 44th
Richard G. Scobee Lecture. He gave us
a review of the sensorimotor characteristics encountered during his examination of complex neuro-ophthalmology
and oculoplastics patients in his 9 years
at The Wilmer Eye Institute.
The Richard G. Scobee Award for the
highest student score on the AOC board
examinations was given to Kathleen
Curtin from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Most of her training
program instructors were present with
the notable exception of Program Director Bruce Furr who headed home
the night before.

On Tuesday morning, our final day in
Chicago, the AACO Practice Management Committee, consisting of Jorie
Jackson, Dr. Aaron Miller and Laurie
Hahn-Parrot, presented a diversified
offering of pearls. We came to understand more about our certification (and
its potential limitations), and state and
federal legislation from Dan Briceland
of AAPOS, professionalism (virtue
transcends behavior), billing in an everchanging insurance system, what CMS
stands for (Center for Medicare and
Medicaid Services) and how all these
may affect our future ability to practice
Orthoptics as the medical professionals
we were trained to be.
Just saying “thank you” seems inadequate to express the appreciation we
all have for the tireless effort so many
of our fellow orthoptists gave to present
the membership with this gathering

In Memoriam - Ronald Marshall Burde, MD
It is with great
sadness that
we announce
the loss of
a cherished
friend, colleague, and
mentor to so
many who
were fortunate
enough to
revolve around
this bright star. Ron died on February 23,
2015 of complications from Parkinson
disease.
After graduating from Massachusetts
Institute of Technology and Thomas
Jefferson College of Medicine, Ron
completed his residency in ophthalmology at Washington University in St. Louis
where he continued on the faculty.
Ron was a great ophthalmologist, and
superb neuro-ophthalmologist quickly
becoming a household name at a time
when the discipline was not yet represented as a specialty on every university
faculty.
He was a great supporter of orthoptists
and coined the term “neuro-orthoptist”
in reference to his close association with
Gill Roper-Hall. They co-authored
many original papers and book chapters
and presented their research together at
regional and national orthoptic meetings.
They also co-hosted one of the largest
regional orthoptic meetings at that time.
but
As Professor of Ophthalmology at
Washington University in St. Louis, Ron
trained a continuous flow of residents and
fellows, and encouraged medical students
and neurology residents to take electives
on the neuro-ophthalmology service. He
authored or edited 12 books, published
many scientific articles, was sought after
as a visiting lecturer and was the recipient
of numerous honors.
It was a grim day for his St. Louis contingent when he accepted the role as Chairman of Ophthalmology at Albert Einstein
College of Medicine/Montefiore in New
York. Of course, his new East Coast
colleagues were thrilled! He remained a
regular visitor to St. Louis and was on the
national scene until his illness forced him
into early retirement.
He was married to his childhood sweetheart Sharon Kaplan Burde and had three
boys. He was a proud husband, father
and grandfather. He was a close friend,
squash partner and co-resident with Steve
Waltman, MD, whom he later encouraged to marry his newly-arrived British orthoptist. He was best man at their
wedding and longtime confidant to both.
He will be missed by thousands of former
patients whose lives he impacted, and
most deeply by his family, close friends
and colleagues. For many of us, his death
marks the end of an era.

AOJ: A New Beginning and
Celebration of the Past
The management of the American
Orthoptic Journal underwent a successful restructuring in 2014, expanding
and changing the composition of the
Corporation’s Board of Directors, and
making a clearer distinction between the
business and scholarly sides of the AOJ.
The new Board of Directors, seated in
Dec. 2014, consists of the American
Orthoptic Council. This ensures that the
Corporation will always be composed
of an equal number of orthoptists and
ophthalmologists, better reflecting the
spirit of collaboration in which the Journal was founded decades ago. As AOC
members change, so will the AOJ, Inc.,
Board of Directors, ensuring a solid mix
of experience and “new blood” in the
management of our journal.
This year, the new Board will have a
very busy agenda! In addition to amending bylaws, creating policy, electing
Corporation officers, and choosing the
future Editor, the bidding process for a
publisher and negotiations with AAPOS
to reinstate the AOJ as a member benefit
will continue.
For the 2015 issue, the Editorial Staff
will remain unchanged with James
Reynolds as Editor, Kyle Arnoldi as
Associate Editor, Jason DeBoer as
Managing Editor, and an Editorial Board
that includes orthoptists Bruce Furr,
Rachael Jenkins, Cindy Pritchard,
Gill Roper-Hall, Lisa Rovick, and
Jocelyn Zurevinsky.
Both the 2015 and 2016 issues of the
AOJ will celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the AACO, which spans a full
year from the fall of 2015 to the fall of
2016. A special cover design is being
developed, and both issues will feature
specific content designed to commemorate this important anniversary. The
2015 release, however, is designed to be
the singular 75th Anniversary “keepsake” issue of the AOJ. And it’s not
too late! The Journal is still accepting
manuscripts for this issue! In particular,
we welcome submissions featuring an
historical perspective on strabismology
and orthoptics.

A Vignette from the Past - Leroy White, CO
Leroy White was born in Edmond, Okla., into a family of five children and raised in
Needles, California. His father, who was a full-blooded Native American, taught music. Leroy was a wonderful musician whose specialty was the pipe organ. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma and taught art in an elementary school when he
first moved to Portland in 1942 as a young adult.
He was certified as an orthoptist in the ‘50s after studying with an orthoptist (Mrs.
Noles) who worked in Portland. He spent some time observing and learning in the
Orthoptic Department at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. He often told me that
“those British orthoptists knew more than their doctors.” He was certified after passing
the written and oral board examinations after a didactic course in Minnesota. This was
the era of orthoptists Fausta Weingeist, Lisa Cibis and Antonia Rasicovici.
In those days one could practice
independently with a standalone orthoptic clinic. Leroy
bought the practice from Mrs.
Noles and maintained a busy
office in the Medical Arts
Building across from the public
library in downtown Portland
for many years. He measured
deviations, treated convergence
and accommodative problems
as well as caring for the amblyopic population for the local ophthalmologists. This was
in the days of Kenneth Swan,
MD at the University of Oregon Medical School from whom we learned about the
“blind spot syndrome.”
I met Leroy White when I was a student at Portland State University and looking
for a part-time job. Robert Knowles was a second orthoptist who joined him later
and worked there full-time; the practice was very busy. Two or three of us college
girls worked a few hours a day seating patients at the Troposcope, changing their stereoscope cards, working the Rotoscope, making home exercise sticks and cards and
occasionally instructing in physiologic diplopia. We did amblyopia activities as well.
Weekly office treatment was routine for patients back then.

His patients adored his kindness, humor and patience though he knew how to chastise
the ornery child. Back then, parents were not allowed to accompany young patients
into the inner office to hover over and distract their children!

I met Bob Knowles recently and we reminisced about Leroy. Bob was certified in 1960
after doing the course in Ann Arbor, Mich. He and Leroy were good friends of Jane
Hurtt, Velma Ritter and Marianne Eyles, a British orthoptist who opened several
offices in Encino, Calif. The “gang” often attended meetings together.

Leroy retired at 65 and then volunteered at Good Samaritan Hospital’s Devers Eye
clinic for a number of years. I did not become an orthoptist until about 15 years later
but we remained close throughout that time.
When Leroy died in 1994, I inherited all his equipment and books. More than what he
taught me professionally, I thank him for opening my eyes to wonderful authors, art
and ballet, and my ears to opera and classical music. He was always studying something, not just ophthalmology.

Kathleen Curtin, CO
Kathleen Curtin was born in Iron
Mountain, Mich., and brought up in
Cleveland, Ohio as one of six children. Being part of such a large family made her realize her love of caring
for others and eventually directed her
toward a career in healthcare.
When Kathleen was a child she was
diagnosed with Brown syndrome.
Her parents followed the advice
of a pediatric ophthalmologist and
certified orthoptist and over time this
issue resolved. Kathleen says that
her ocular history influenced her to
pursue a career in Orthoptics.
Kathleen attended The Ohio State
University in 2009. Whenever she
had any free-time she would spend it
outdoors hiking, camping, or boating.
She also has a passion for travel.
Kathleen received her BA in English
in 2012. She pursued her orthoptic
training in Ann Arbor, at the University of Michigan’s Kellogg Eye
Center, under the direction of Bruce
Furr, CO, PhD. There, she had a
great team who made it their priority
to teach her everything they knew.
Kathleen now has the pleasure of
working alongside Dr. Aaron Miller,
and Jorie Jackson at Houston Eye
Associates in The Woodlands, Texas.
This busy practice sees a diverse
patient population so Kathleen is
continuously exposed to a variety
of conditions. Kathleen says she is
fortunate to have found such a perfect
fit in the first position of her career.

Tribute Committee Report
As the new Chair of the AACO
Tribute Committee, I would like to
thank my predecessor Cindy Cline
for the excellent job she has done in
revitalizing this committee. Many
orthoptists were honored or remembered with donations and tributes
during her term.
Please consider sending a tribute in
memory, or in honor of someone in
your career history that has made
a difference in your professional
journey. Perhaps you have a mentor, coworker, advisor, leader in our
field, teacher, physician, or special
orthoptist friend who has made your
career more productive and enjoyable. Why not honor them! Your
tax-deductible donations help support AACO education programs
and projects.
This year we are celebrating the
75th anniversary of our profession.
A separate committee will be soliciting donations for a special commemorative booklet which will be
available at the national meeting.
Meanwhile the Tribute Committee will accept individual tributes
which will be printed in the next
issue of PRISM. A receipt and letter
of acknowledgment will go out to
the donor, and a note of recognition
will be mailed to the honoree or the
family of a passed loved one.
The tribute forms can be found on
the AACO website.
Please send the completed forms
with checks made payable to
