Will There be Anyone to Follow?
D
uring the past week I have been attending a gathering of Marist
priests in New Zealand under the age of 65. There were 31 of us
at this meeting. It may interest you that:
14 were aged between 60 and 65
13 were aged between 50 and 60
4 were aged between 40 and 50
All of these priests work in a wide variety of ministries – youth and
schools, parishes, Maori pastoral care, communications, seminary
formation, lecturers etc. However, the reality is that we are getting
older and we cannot as a Province sustain in the future all the works
we are presently engaged in.
We have 4 fine young men currently in formation at the Marist
Seminary in Auckland. However, that is not enough to replace those
of us who in the next 10 years or so will not have the energy and
perhaps the health to do the things we are engaged in now.
The Church and the Society of Mary need vocations. One of the
highlights of our gathering was the influence and respect we have for
those Marists who inspired and encouraged us as young men to
consider a religious vocation.
If there are any young men reading this I encourage you to consider
the possibility that God may be calling you to serve the Church as a
priest. It is a worthwhile and fulfilling vocation. Yes, it takes courage
in our secular world to be different – to discern what God is asking of
me. However, the Bishops and the Provincials of religious orders
need generous and faith filled young men to answer the need we
have in the New Zealand Church for priests and religious.
Why not talk with someone about it?

ANZAC and Other Wartime Memorabilia
You are invited to bring along any memorabilia or photos to
place on a display in front of the Altar for St Teresa's or St
Thomas More on ANZAC Weekend.
This would enhance the liturgy to remember those who served for their country
and pray for peace.
Please note there is no Saturday morning Mass at St Teresa's on ANZAC Day

St. Vincent de Paul Society– Otari Parish
The local Conference responds to the Society’s call to follow Christ through
service to those in need.
Their commitment is through person-to-person contact.
Activities we perform:
-Visiting and spending time with the elderly, sick, lonely or homeless in the
neighbourhood, and in hospital and local rest homes.
-Guiding and equipping refugees to adjust to life in a new land and in our area.
-Obtaining/Donating uniform or activity fees to support our most needy school
students.
-Transporting elderly and the ill to doctors, dentists.
-Delivering emergency food packs, clothing and household goods to people in
most need.
We welcome anyone who would like to take part in our meetings. We meet in
prayer and friendship to promote compassion, respect, humility and common
sense to anyone who needs it. We meet on the evening of the last Wednesday
of the month.Next weekend, after Masses (25/26 April), a collection will be taken
up to help fund our parish work.
