Quick Reference Sheet ORGANIZATION TUNGASUVVINGAT INUIT WHAT IT IS Organization Mandate Tungasuvvingat Inuit (TI) aims at empowering and enhancing the lives of Inuit across Canada. Since 1987, TI has been operating in Ottawa as a community-based counselling and resource centre. TI was first established as the result of an Inuit needs assessment study which clearly demonstrated the necessity for a service geared to the unique culture and needs of Inuit clients adjusting to urban living. Since then, the programs at TI have expanded to accommodate the growing Inuit population. WHAT THEY PROVIDE Key Programs & Services for Job Seekers PROGRAM DESCRIPTION Contact: Employment Support Program - An HRSDC ASET Agreement Holder, TI's Employment and Learning Centre offers assistance with finding financial assistance for education, résumé writing, developing cover letters, and practising interviews; also assists in removal of barriers to long-term employment success. English and Inuktitut. Eligibility criteria: Urban Inuit persons. Employment Support Program 613.565.5885 [email protected] OTHER PROGRAMS Community Support Centre - Supportive environment that attempts to duplicate the community spirit and cultural surrounding of the Inuit homelands. Visitors can make tea and bannock, eat traditional food when available, read northern newspapers, and socialize with other Inuit. Daily programs: clothing bank, employment services, computer and internet access. Weekly community kitchen program. 613.565.5885 [email protected] Youth Program (TI) - Various programs that promote Inuit culture and language, life skills education, promotes exercise, provides alternatives to negative environments. Eligibility Criteria: Inuit youth 10-25 years of age. Inuit Family Resource Centre - Child development and nutrition, cultural development and retention, parenting and caretaking skills, community development , pre and postnatal program: support through pregnancy, birth and the first year of infancy. Eligibility Criteria: Inuit children 0-13 years of age and their families. Mamisarvik Healing Centre - Holistic and therapeutic treatment that helps clients end their dependency on drugs and alcohol, heal from past trauma and develop a healthy lifestyle. Services include: inquiry contact, intake, initial assessment treatment planning , case management, residential treatment, day and evening treatment, continuing care. Community Support Program - Short-term counselling, crisis intervention and referrals for: housing, legal, medical and social services, interpretation services and assistance in obtaining non-insured health benefits, weekly Inuit women’s healing circle.
