The significant additions at the company’s one-of-a-kind production facility should be completed by late summer or early fall. The SCORE Cleveland chapter is part of a network of more than 300 chapters across the country that offer free mentoring as well as low-cost seminars and workshops on everything from preparing a business plan to developing marketing strategies. SCORE volunteers share their real world expertise in one-on-one or team mentoring sessions, provide online counseling and lead workshops on a wide range of business topics. SCORE volunteers also can serve in a chapter leadership capacity or assist with marketing, IT, administration, finance or fundraising. June 2015 Member News Lake County History Center Partners With Geauga Family Farms Consumer Reports Names Lake Health Top Performer in CT Scan Radiation Safety Geauga Family Farms, a cooperative of 10 certifiedorganic family farmers in Geauga County, is partnering with the Lake County History Center to host a convenient pick-up site for Painesville area members of its Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. Elizabeth Connor, executive director of the Lake County History Center, said partnering with Geauga Family Farms to provide a place for co-op members to pick up locally grown produce is a way to get back to its own roots. “The Lake County Home was a working farm since 1876,” Connor said. “This would let us get back to the roots of what the property was originally used for while allowing us to reach out and see new faces of people who may not have visited our site before.” CSA members may pick up at the Lake County History Center, located at 250 Riverside Drive in Painesville Township, Tuesdays between 4 and 6 p.m. during the 20week Summer CSA season. The season will begin in early to mid-June, depending on Mother Nature. The CSA model provides a way for consumers to purchase local food directly from a farm by entering into a contract with the farmer. CSA members become partners with a farm by paying up-front for a subscription, or “share,” of produce that is received weekly during the 20-week growing season from June through October. By investing in the farm at the beginning of the growing season, members provide financial support to the farm when it is most needed for seeds, supplies, labor, etc. Members choose a nearby location at which to pick up their weekly share, such as the Lake History Center or other new sites this year in Hudson and Beachwood. Other sites include locations in Middlefield, Lakewood, Macedonia, downtown Cleveland, Parma and others all over Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Summit and Trumbull counties. Lake Health is one of 13 top performing hospitals in Ohio for computed tomography—or CT scan—radiation safety, according to Consumer Reports. Ratings, released by the organization March 5, are based on the number of “double scans” performed and the steps hospitals take to reduce patients’ exposure to unnecessary, excess radiation. Last year, Lake Health performed 41,225 CT scans, which combine X-rays taken from many different angles to provide cross-sectional images inside the body. These clear, detailed pictures help doctors diagnose illnesses and internal injuries as well as monitor cancer and other diseases. While most patients benefit from the technology, the increased use of the imaging tool has raised concerns about the risks of radiation overexposure. “CT provides unparalleled diagnostic capabilities that at times can be lifesaving,” explained David Steiger, MD, chief of radiology at Lake Health. “Although the scans deliver more radiation than a single X-ray, the information gathered is so much more valuable than the risk of exposure involved.” For example, CT scans can help pinpoint the location of a potentially fatal blood clot in the lungs. They can also render three-dimensional images of the heart and coronary arteries allowing cardiovascular experts to check for aneurysms and blockages without the need to perform an invasive catheter angiography. However, Dr. Steiger emphasizes that the technology should always be used judiciously. “The golden rule in medicine is that the benefit of the procedure should outweigh the risk,” he said. With patient safety a top priority, Lake Health has the most effective protocols in place to reduce radiation exposure and minimize risk. “Patients who come to Lake Health for any type of imaging, whether it’s CT, MRI or X-ray, or an interventional radiology procedure can feel confident they’re in good hands,” Dr. Steiger said. People with Alzheimer’s often have problems with sleeping or may experience changes in their sleep schedule. Many people with Alzheimer’s wake up more often and stay awake longer during the night. A person experiencing sleep disturbances should have a thorough medical exam to identify any treatable illnesses that may be contributing to the problem. Individuals may feel very drowsy during the day and then be unable to sleep at night. They may become restless or agitated in the late afternoon or early evening, an experience often called “sundowning.” In late stages of Alzheimer’s, individuals spend about 40 percent of their time in bed at night awake and a significant part of their daytime sleeping. In extreme cases, people may have a complete reversal of the usual daytime wakefulness-nighttime sleep pattern. Studies have found that sleep medications generally do not improve overall sleep quality for older adults. Use of sleep medications is associated with a greater chance of falls and other risks that may outweigh the benefits of treatment. Non-drug coping strategies should always be tried before medications, since some sleep medications can cause serious side effects. Maintain regular times for meals and for going to bed and getting up, seek morning sunlight exposure, encourage regular daily exercise, but no later than four hours before bedtime, avoid alcohol, caffeine and nicotine. Treat any pain, if the person is taking a cholinesterase inhibitor (tacrine, donepezil, rivastigmine or galantamine), avoid giving the medicine before bed. Make sure the bedroom temperature is comfortable, provide nightlights and security objects. If the person awakens, discourage staying in bed while awake; use the bed only for sleep Discourage watching television during periods of wakefulness. Non-aggressive Verbal Behavior: Incoherent babbling, screaming or repetitive questions is frustrating to the caregiver and family members, especially as a sign that your loved one is "losing it." Non-aggressive Physical Behavior: Pacing, wandering, repetitive body motions, hoarding or shadowing represent ways for your loved one to communication boredom, fear, confusion, search for safety or inability to verbalize a request for help or a feeling of pain. Behavioral disturbances are seen in most individuals with dementia at some point in their course. Identification of predisposing and precipitating factors is very important. The approach to the management of behavioral disturbances in individuals with dementia should be structured and thorough. Ensuring the safety of the individuals and others should be paramount. Addressing the causes of behavioral disturbances such as comorbid medical illnesses, polypharmacy, pain, personal need, environmental factors, Aggressive Verbal Behavior: Cursing and abusive language can be shocking when your loved one was previously upright and proper. Aggressive Physical Behavior: Clearly, physically aggressive behavior such as hitting, scratching or kicking can be dangerous or life-threatening to the caregiver and care recipient. Men are twice as likely to exhibit aggressive behavior, especially in the middle to late stages of the disease, or if they have major depression. The degradation of different parts of the brain causes aberrant behavior. Other conditions, such as pain, can also lead to it. Experts say that all types of behavior are forms of communication. Your loved one is trying to tell you something even though the disease has robbed them of other ways (i.e., talking) of telling you. Perhaps your loved one is depressed or in pain and does not know how to express it in words. Some experts believe that agitation behavior is "the inability to deal with stress." For the caregiver, the key is to identify whether the behavior is event-related (a visitor arrives, dinner is served), sudden (unexpected outburst) or escalates ("catastrophic" spiral of tension and outbursts). Organization by the caregiver will help a great deal in beginning to combat these behaviors: Modify the environment to reduce known stressors (e.g., shadowy lighting, mirrors, loud noises); Note patterns of behavior and subtle (and not so subtle) clues that tension and anxiety are increasing (i.e., pacing, incoherent vocalization); Dysfunctional behavior often increases at the end of the day as stress builds and your loved one becomes tired. etc. is critical to a successful outcome.
