Pastor’s Desk
Dear Friends,
The PCUSA has voted to change
its national constitution to
move the definition of marriage,
an issue that has been at the
forefront of debate over the years.
I know that within our own
Presbytery and congregation this
has been an issue of concern and
prayer for many. It is my prayer
that we all remain at the table,
continuing the conversation
around what matters most to
each of us. I give thanks for our
congregation and for the gifts
that every member brings for the
building of the kingdom in our
midst. The change in the national
constitution moves the definition
of marriage from “between a man
and a woman” to “traditionally
between a man and a woman.”
Now individual Sessions,
the governing body of the
congregation, must decide
what policies they might adopt
in response. The Sessions are
free to determine their own
responses apart from the national
gathering, the General Assembly.
At the Session’s request, the
pastors led four gatherings for
the congregation on Sunday
mornings in March looking at

PCPC Vision Statement
Join in PCPC Easter Tradition
PCPC continues its longstanding
tradition of adorning a courtyard cross
with real and artificial flowers before
and after church services on Easter
Day. Bring your flowers and join
the individuals and families in this
time-honored tradition that shows yet
another expression of our love for our
Lord, Jesus Christ, on His Risen Day.
We are called to be a community of
disciples in Jesus Christ, who, seeking unity
in the faith, are living our lives in joyful
obedience to God’s Word. Worshipping
Christ, learning in Christ, growing in
Christ, caring in Christ, acting in Christ,
reformed in Christ.

relevant scriptures regarding this issue. The last one was on
March 29th.
I’ve asked the current Session to open their meeting on
April 14th to hear input from the congregation around
this question, beginning at 6:30 pm. Depending upon
the number of people desiring to speak, we will likely
limit the time to two or three minutes per person. I’ve
proposed to the Session that it not take any action on this
issue until after that April opportunity to hear input from
the congregation. Then I’ve proposed to the Session that
deliberation and action on any motion could resume at
their stated meeting on May 12th, or later as the Session
may require.
You can email input to the Session at Clerk@palmaceia.
org, and send written communications to Clerk of The
Session, PCPC, 3501 San Jose St., Tampa, FL 33629.
The Session will be given a packet of each emailed or
written communication. Written communications will be
shared in their entirety.
The Session at PCPC is made up of thirty-six elders; each
year a third of them roll off active service and another third
are elected as a freshman class. I’m grateful for this current
Session, as I have been for each of the thirty-two Sessions
I have worked with in my ministry. They are doing a
wonderful job of praying, serving, and working in faith
and fellowship together.
The members of this year’s Session are:

worship at pcpc
Palma Ceia Presbyterian Church offers several
options for worship. On Sunday mornings, there
are traditional services held in the Sanctuary
at 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. At this service we
follow the Order for the Lord’s Day from the
Book of Common Worship and follow the pattern
of “Gathering, The Word and Sending.” Hymns
are led by the choir and selected from The
Presbyterian Hymnal.
In addition, there is a contemporary worship
service called the Connection held in the
multipurpose room in Covenant Hall at 9:00
a.m. The service offers a relaxed environment
with a message by one of the pastors and music
provided by the worship band. The sermons
typically follow a series format.
A thirty-minute Vespers worship service is offered
on Sunday evenings at 6:00 p.m. in the Chapel.
This service includes scripture readings, prayer
and meditation.
The sacraments, baptism and communion,
are offered at all three services - Traditional,
Connection and Vespers.
There is something for everyone at Palma Ceia
Presbyterian Church, and we welcome you to
worship with us.

NAREA CONFERENCE
By Nancy Little, Preschool Director
In March I took a Continuing
Education trip to New York
City. I attended the winter
conference of the North
America Reggio Emilia
Alliance, or NAREA. In
the 1990’s the schools of
Reggio Emilia, Italy, received
international attention when
they were described as the

education in the world.
From that inspiration have come numerous organizations
and initiatives which contribute to the vitality and vigor of
early education in this and other countries.
I was privileged to hear the Italian teachers (speaking
through translators) and to see their video of provocations
and the remarkable responses of children so young.
I also heard a presentation by Mara Krechevsky from
Yale University on documentation of children’s learning,
the increased use of which is delighting our PCPC
community. The reason we document is to make learning
visible and to deepen our understanding of the processes
by which children learn.
PRESHCOOL
As well as attending lectures, we also visited
schools. For me, this was the heart of
the experience. I visited the Blue School,
Williamsburg Northside School, and the
Tribeca Community School.

REPORT FROM FEBRUARY 2015
TRIP TO MOMBIN CROCHU,
HAITI
‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did
for one of the least of these brothers
and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
Matthew 25:40
During February 20-27, a team of 13 medical and ancillary
personnel from PCPC and elsewhere traveled to Mombin
Crochu, Haiti, to work in the tiny hospital nestled in the
mountains in this, the poorest part of the poorest country in
the western hemisphere.
During this time 38
surgical procedures and
350 dental procedures
were done, over 140
patients were seen, and
85 pairs of glasses were
distributed. Visits were
made to the community,
lectures were given to
students and medical
personnel, teaching was accomplished, and assessments were
done of the status of the hospital, which has been supported
by PCPC since 1994.
This trip to Mombin Crochu Hospital demonstrated the
continued improvement exemplified by the continuity of
the care given by the physicians, as well as the administrator
and the financial director. This has lent stability to the
hospital and the ability to care for persons within the
community and outlying areas.
The patients are well cared for,
and the limited resources are used
to their best advantage. There
are programs in public health,
nutrition, and education within
the community. The Food for
Life program continues to offer
nutritional support for the patients, and is ongoing. The
Moringa Project will be restarted when the rainy season
returns.
The Mobile Clinic is an exceptional outreach that offers
basic care to those who would not be able to receive
it. Assessment by trained team members showed the

program to be well organized
and functioning in an efficient,
effective manner allowing muchneeded care to reach outlying
areas. The clinic’s truck is
invaluable and serves not only
for transportation for the hospital personnel but also to
carry sick patients to more advanced
facilities. Sending work teams to
help with the structural integrity,
electrical wiring, and maintenance,
as well as other medical teams would
greatly contribute to the facility and is
encouraged.
This trip re-enforced the belief that God is at work in
Mombin Crochu, and it is a privilege to be part of this
journey. We commend the hard
work of those at Mombin Crochu
Hospital, and all they are doing
for those so in need.
A
And we give deep thanks for the
continued support of PCPC,
which helps to sustain this greatly
needed mission, helping God’s people help themselves.

“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life,

Psalm 23:6
LEARNING AND GROWING IN
CHRIST
By Susan LeBlanc
I amble in to my classroom on the second floor of the
Westminster building. The yellow pine cabinets and terrazzo
floor greet me with a familiar smell. I see all my friends and
we look at our art displayed from last week. Soon we are all
there and seated around the rectangular tables with worn
maroon bibles in hand, ready to turn to our bible verses.
The teacher opens with prayer and our lesson begins. He
knows each of us by name and is not just our teacher, but
our mentor. We feel comfortable with him and are ready to
discuss, draw a picture or listen to a piece of music related
to the bible story about our relationship with Christ. The
discussions are always lively and filled with questions. As
the shadows move across the room, Sunday School comes to
a close.
This story is a vivid memory from my childhood. My
relationship with Christ started in my Sunday School
classes. My father was the teacher.
As a child, I didn’t understand the importance of going
to Sunday School. Thankfully, my parents did. That
foundation was being built every single Sunday. Those
stories are a part of who I am. Now it is my turn to give
back.
I am a parent of an elementary aged child; I want her
to have the foundation I grew up with. I have made a
commitment to all of God’s children to help them learn
and grow in Christ. Here is what a typical Sunday morning
looks like: Sunday School begins as the children join us on
the second floor. We (there are at least four of us) greet the
children and have a quick paper/pencil activity for them.
Each child has a bible and opens it to the story we are
reading for the day. There is a video that makes the story
come alive for them, and then we separate into two smaller
groups. Each group has at least two facilitators and the
children do an activity. The activity could be art or a game,
even cooking. Soon all of the children are back together
and we close with the Lord’s Prayer.
As parents, we are always on the lookout for the best
education for our children. Well, here it is every Sunday
morning created just for your child to learn and grow in
Christ. We want you to be a part of your child’s foundation
too. The lessons are extremely easy to follow; all of the
prep work has been done for you! If you can, make a
commitment to one Sunday; there is one child in every
group that needs to hear your voice. You could be the
difference maker.

PARISH NURSE CORNER
The church Parish Nurses, Gayle Hudson, RN, and Martha Spicklemire, RN,
provide informative news each month in order to:
1. Offer educational materials and resources to the congregation.
2. Provide patient advocacy tips to assist with individual medical needs.
Advanced Care Planning
All adults benefit from thinking about what their healthcare
choices would be if they are unable to speak for themselves.
This event could happen if a loved one is suddenly injured
or experiences a life-threatening illness. National Healthcare
Decision Day is April 16th and gives us an opportunity to
look at some aspects of advanced care planning for any future
healthcare decisions that we or family members might encounter.
Advanced care planning is a thoughtful process of planning for
future medical care, should you become unable to make your
own decisions due to a life-limiting illness or injury. It involves
education, reflection, communication, and documentation. It is
a valuable tool for families as they face difficult decisions about
caring for you in the final phase of life.
One aspect of advanced care planning is appointing a healthcare
surrogate. This is a person you select (family member or trusted
friend) who has the authority to make all healthcare decisions
you would make if able to do so. This person must be at least
18 years old, be willing to speak on your behalf when needed, is
comfortable asking questions of your healthcare team and serve
as an advocate when handling any conflicts with others who
might disagree with your wishes. You may choose an alternate
surrogate in case your primary surrogate is unable or unavailable
to make decisions. In order for the surrogate to act in your
behalf you will need to complete an appointment of healthcare
surrogate form. On this form you will designate what measures
you do and do not want taken in the event you suffer from some
form of end-stage condition with little chance of recovery. The
form must be signed by you and have two witnesses signatures
as well in order to be legal. Copies of the form should be given
to your surrogate and all doctors that care for you. Keep the
original form with your other important papers. If you are
admitted to a hospital give a copy to that facility as well.
Another option in advanced care planning is the completion
of the Five Wishes document. This is a United States advanced
directive created by the non-profit organization Aging with
Dignity. It has been described as a living will with a heart and
soul. An online version called Five Wishes Online now allows
users to complete the document using an online format or you
may print out a blank version to complete by hand. The last
portion of the document contains a section that must be signed
and witnessed. It is a legal document in 42 states. The form is
available at the Aging with Dignity website.
Advanced care planning is a gift to you and those you love.
It is never too early to take this important step to ensure you
that your health care wishes and decisions are respected in the
event that you are not able to speak for yourself. If you would
like further information about advanced care planning and
the necessary forms to complete this process please call Gayle
Hudson at 813-963-0819.

BEAR ONE ANOTHER’S
BURDENS
In Galatians 6, Paul tells us to “carry each other’s burdens,
and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” At
PCPC, our Stephen Ministers have been trained and
organized to do just that. They provide one-to-one care,
prayer, and support to those who are going through a
difficult time.
If you would like more information on our Stephen
Ministry, please call Betsy Bradt at 286-1676.
By Pastor John DeBevoise
Do you know where St. John is? I’m not asking about
the apostle -- but about the Presbyterian church here in
Tampa named after the disciple John. The church is our
neighbor. It’s located on North MacDill across the street
from Women’s Hospital and about a block south of the
intersection of Macdill and Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd.
on the west.
St. John Presbyterian is a wonderful church with a heritage
of benevolent outreach and faithful Christian witness.
It began as the Ybor City Mission in the 1930’s here in
Tampa, and people still remember the wonderful legacy of
Reverend Walter Passiglia, whose pastoral ministry was an
enormous blessing to the community.
The church moved from Ybor City to its present location
where it has continued its outreach in the West Tampa
neighborhood. The church offers an extensive part of its
campus to the Judeo Christian Clinic where over 40,000
patients are seen each year. It also houses on its property
the St. John Learning Center, a full day school for the
children of working parents, many of whom are single
parents and working at minimum wage jobs. The church is
now pastored by the Reverend Ramiro Ros, who was, for
over twenty years, the pastor at the Beth-El Presbyterian
Mission to Farmworkers in Wimauma, FL. Ramiro is
bilingual, and preaches in Spanish one Sunday a month,
particularly at the church’s evening service.
The congregation is smaller now, but their faith and their
heart are large. They have approached PCPC’s Witness &
Service committee and asked if members of our church
might support them by coming to worship with them
on occasion, continuing a critical mass of a worshiping
community in the sanctuary. A number of the members of
the committee have gone and visited, taking part in that
11am worship service. They report that the worship was
vibrant with wonderful music, and Ramiro is an excellent
preacher, and that the congregation welcomed them so
warmly. They were glad to share with them.
If you are able to consider being a part of the group of
folks who is trying to go on occasion and worship at St.
John Presbyterian as a way of supporting their ministry
there and nurturing their life, you can obtain more details
by emailing Dr. Sylvia Campbell at [email protected] or
Dennis Bradt at [email protected].
We are grateful to be in partnership with our neighboring
churches here in Tampa and we hope that everyone will
join us in continuing to pray for the life, witness, and work
of the St. John Presbyterian Church.

And he said to them, “Do not be amazed; you are
looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who has been crucified.
He has risen; He is not here; behold, here is the place
where they laid Him.”
Mark 16:6
Lord,
the Resurrection of Your Son
has given us new life and renewed hope.
Help us to live as new people
in pursuit of the Christian ideal.
Grant us wisdom to know what we must do,
the will to want to do it,
the courage to undertake it,
the perseverance to continue to do it,
and the strength to complete it.
We rejoice in the good news of Jesus Christ!
Amen
