are invited to attend school on that day, follow an abbreviation of their children’s schedule, meet
their children’s teachers, and learn about the classes their children will be taking. We ask that you not
bring your children because we will not be able to care for them. We hope to see many of you on Saturday!

KIUA SPORTS
MS Girls Basketball
The girls took third place, beating Senri-Osaka
to finish on a winning note. This is the first trophy the girls' basketball team has won in 5
years. Marist won the tournament in front of
their home crowd.
The most notable changes to the calendar are:

April 9 - TOEFL Primary Exams (grades 2-8)

April 18 - Open House

June 13 - MS/HS Sports Day

June 15 - No school for MS/HS

July 6-7 - MS/HS Final Exams

July 8 - No school for MS/HS

July 9-11 - MS/HS Camp

Sept. 15-18 - Achievement Tests

Sept. 26 - Elementary Sports Day

Sept. 28 - No School for Elementary

Nov. 5-6 - Elementary Fall Camp
TOEFL PRIMARY
A new English proficiency test called the
TOEFL Primary has recently been made available for use with elementary and junior high
students. We will be administering this test to
all KIUA students in grades 2-8 to see what
grades it is most appropriate for, so we can
make a good decision about how we may want
to use it in the future to check our students’
progress in English learning. Our students will
take the test during periods one and two (9:0510:40) on Thursday, April 9.
MS Boys Soccer
The boys played at CA and came in fourth
place. Mr. Simoes was happy with how the
team did overall. Though they would've liked to
have finished higher, he felt it was good considering the strong competition.
HS Boys Soccer
At the WJAA Nagoya tourney, the Flames
downed CA jv 3-0, then battled St. Maur
(Yokohama) coming just short 2-1. In the semifinal against M.C. Perry Samurai, Sean Osada.
had many good saves. The match ended in a 00 draw. In the penalty kicks, Perry converted
more, going through to the finals, 4-3. In a
back-and-forth match for 3rd place, the Flames
drew even with the Marist Bulldogs in the closing minutes with a well-placed free-kick from
Kaito. With a 3-3 stalemate at full time, penalty
kicks were taken. This time, the Flames came
out on top, 5-4. KIUA was the only team to hold
champion Perry team scoreless during the tournament. Well done, players and coaches!
HS Girls Futsal
All the girls who took the opportunity enjoyed
playing soccer and making fun memories together, especially seniors Meg and Joanna. As it
was the first time for many to play since middle
school, everyone realized how fun futsal could
be. We hope to see the girls give it a go next
year too!
STUDENT TEACHER
Angela Marraudino is a senior studying elementary education through Laurel University in the
United States. She will be doing her student teaching practicum at KIU Academy this spring, working with Mr. Rohrer. Angela will be teaching fifth graders and some fourth and fifth grade combined
classes. We trust this will be a good experience for both our students and Angela.

UNIVERSITY CORNER
DUAL ENROLLMENT PROVIDES HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH MORE OPPORTUNITIES!
Kyoto International University (KIU) Academy
provides a quality and affordable international
education for internationally-minded students
grades 1 – 12. Qualified KIU Academy high
school students, typically in their junior and
senior year, may also choose to dual-enroll in
rigorous college-level courses to build on their
high school studies and to explore more deeply subjects of potential interest.
Beyond gaining knowledge, students have an
opportunity to further develop essential life
skills, such as effective communication, critical
thinking and “win-win” problem solving.” Dual
enrollment also allows students to gain confidence as they better know what to expect
when they enter a college or university full-time. In some cases, students will be able to earn
transferable college credit that will save both time and money for the student and their family.
Support for dual enrollment is gaining momentum around the world, particularly in the US
where states are competing to get well-rounded, capable international students. The KIU organization is eager and well-positioned to serve internationally-minded students interested in
enrolling in post-secondary courses while in high school. In particular, KIU’s current Foundations Program (http://www.kyotoiu.ac.jp/en/05program/index.html), coupled with the Autumn 2015 launch of the University of London’s International Foundation Programme
(http://www.kyotoiu.ac.jp/en/08London/index.html), prepares students to succeed in more
advanced coursework in the future.
The Kyoto International University organization strives to be the recognized leader in quality
bilingual education based on Christian principles. If you would like to learn more about KIU
and the Foundations Program or International Foundation Programme, please visit us on the
web or call 0774-64-0804.
We hope you have a wonderful new 2015 school year!
