The Relationship of Doubt to Faith
What a wonderful Easter Triduum we celebrated here
at St. Peter’s! The liturgies were beautiful, but even
greater were the commitment of sixteen people willing to
take the leap of faith by entering into the fullness of the
Catholic Church.
As I assisted with the various Holy Week liturgies, I
couldn’t help but be haunted by a couple questions: does
all that we’re doing in this church really matter in the
grand scheme of things? Do these extraordinary liturgies
really impact the world? Has something of eternal
proportions really changed in the lives of these sixteen
people?
Are there really temporal and eternal
reverberations for what we did last week at St. Peter’s?
One thing that I have learned in my own journey of
faith is that the finite mind will always have doubts. The
more one enters by faith into the infinite, however, these
doubts have less of a hold on us. Sometimes, God even
gives more tangible evidence as he does in our Gospel
today with Thomas. But even with Thomas, that certainty
probably waned a bit. Once Jesus ascended to the Father,
Thomas had to be a believer like the rest of us, content
with signs and glimpses of the Lord’s presence. Even
those with the greatest faith, as evidenced by Mother
Theresa’s doubts later in life, sometimes struggle to make
sense of God’s mysterious workings.
So do I think the events of Holy Week at St. Peter’s
changed the world? Absolutely! In a mysterious way, the
Lord of the Universe was present here, working through
the complexities of human experience, so that his
goodness might be spread even more diffusely.
Will the events of the Easter Triduum at St. Peter’s
matter from the standpoint of eternity? Absolutely!
When we are privileged to meet the Lord someday, Easter
2015 I’m sure will be significant. But so will every other
day! So let’s make each day a mini-Easter, in which the
joy of the risen Lord penetrates our soul and transforms
us.
Let us grow together in Christ,
Fr. Jeremy

The Montessori Preschool/Kindergarten program is unique
and unlike any in this area.
“When we were visiting various preschools to decide where to
send our daughter, we were amazed by the learning environment Montessori provided that was unlike any other. This environment has enabled her to flourish and grow beyond the average expectations of a preschooler.” Courtney and Michael
St. Peter’s Kindergarten is a full-day program. Children in
full-day programs have higher achievement test scores on all
core academics and they exhibit more independent learning,
classroom involvement, and productivity in work with peers.
Full-day kindergarteners are more than twice as likely as halfday kindergarteners to reach grade levels without repeating a
grade.
St. Peter’s Elementary, Junior High and High School have
long been known for the tradition of academic excellence. The
continuing intent is to have a school that serves the needs of the
community and teaches students the importance of goodness,
discipline, and learning. St. Peter’s sends graduates out into
young adulthood with a commitment to the service of Christ,
Church, family, community, and the world.
“St. Peter's helped me build a solid foundation in my belief in
God and confidence in my abilities as a young person. This,
along with the educational experience of an advanced, college
preparatory curriculum, helped prepare me for the challenges
of adulthood. Thanks to St. Peter's School.” Chris Wilson ’85
“In addition to providing the opportunity to learn in the academic arena, St. Peter's challenges the emerging young adult to
think on what they want their lives to be in the moral, spiritual,
and ethical sense. This opportunity is unique to parochial education.” Daniel P. Moloney ’91

OF ONE HEART AND MIND
Reading about the faith of the early Christian believers can be a
real inspiration to those of us who have been Christians for a long
time, as well as for those who are newly baptized. Can you imagine
people of this world being “of one heart and mind” as was the first
community of believers? Today’s First Letter of John seems to hold
the key to how this can be accomplished. Keeping God’s commandments and loving all of God’s children seems to be the start of being
“of one heart and mind.” We live in a world that stresses differences—
differences among religions, among races, between genders, and
among economic classes. Today we are summoned to focus on what
we all share in common on this fragile planet of ours.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
When we imagine the disciples cowering behind locked doors on
the first Easter, it is a matter of the greatest urgency that the doors get opened. They are not locked in as if in prison; rather,
they have chosen to marinate in fear. Both the lock and the key stand on their side of the door, in their control. Christ breaks
through this significant barrier with a message of “Peace.” The risen Lord’s word propels them through the door and along
the path leading to the consoling image of the community living in harmony in the first reading today. What do we pray for
in our tradition? More than anything else, we pray for peace. Every Mass is an earnest prayer for peace with God, with self,
with neighbor, and for peace in the world. Yet, curiously, the peace Christ offers is deeper than the mere absence of conflict.
Our tradition treasures the memories of saints who were remarkably open to Christ’s gift of peace even in the maelstroms of
history. St. Edith Stein and St. Maximillian Kolbe, martyrs of the Holocaust, are but two examples. At the eye of a fearful
storm, they stand as witnesses to the power of Christ’s rising in our lives.
