He said if anyone has further questions on any criminal activity they are concerned about you can give him a call at 757 727-6864, or email him at [email protected]. He also invited people to the website: www.fbi.gov to find links to informative sites concerning various schemes criminals use to prey on people. Our next meeting is on November 13 when our friend Anthony Merendino will be showing us the new products Ski World is offering this year. If you are looking for a ski trip or know someone else who is, Bill and Sonny still have two openings each on their trips. My Mount Snow trip needs at least six more to break even and it has capacity for 20 more bus riders and 10 or more others. If these trips don’t fit your schedule there are BRSC trips available, including one to Mayrhofen, Austria with the Columbia Ski Club. Ski Chair, Steve Liberman, is working on day or weekend trips for 2015. So come on out to the meeting and have a slice of pizza during our social hour, sign up for trips or make your November trip payment , see what Ski World has to offer and talk with all your PSC friends. Hope to see you there. / Rick Irby, President of PSC MEMBERS SPOTTED OUT & ABOUT: Ronnie Triplett preparing for Frostbite Race, in Hampton Roads, Oct 26th Steve Liberman, bowling in a Virginia Beach league, in October. Skiing Together Since 1966 NOVEMBER 2014 Ski News, Page 4 PeninsulaSkiClub.com SKI ACTIVITIES CHAIRMAN ARTICLE: With a three week gap between Telluride and Mt. Snow and no trips after Schweitzer at the end of February, other than the Ski Council Eurofest, I’m looking for other options for our members. Please let me know about your interests and I’ll try to arrange more PSC trips. Here are some ideas in no particular order to spark your interest and to encourage new trip captains. Family trip or “learn to ski/snowboard day.” I think we could really use a trip to VA, WV, MD or PA. Yes, this means we ski for a long weekend or during a school break (= lift lines), but it’s not about maxing out OUR skiing, but getting the next generations skiing or snowboarding. Wintergreen day trip Mid-week 2 or 3 day trip – Snowshoe, Canaan/Timberline, Wisp, Whitetail, Seven Springs Long weekend - Snowshoe, Canaan/Timberline, Wisp, Whitetail, Seven Springs Amtrak train to PA, NY, VT, NH, ME (include snowmobile?) Snowmobile trip 1, 2 or 3-day total immersion ski boot camp with highly qualified instructors Whitewater rafting trip (NC, WV, PA?) Spring skiing (March and early April). There is plenty of snow at altitude (Colorado for example) and further north (BC or Alyeska). I skied at Breckenridge last April and it snowed 15” the first night! See article in National Ski Club Newsletter at http://nationalskiclubnews.com/images/2014MarchIssue.pdf (page 8 of PDF/page 15 of magazine) Alaska trip (ask Ray Carmines about Alyeska) Some years ago we ran a trip to Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Germany near Austria. We had something like 104 on the trip and many weren’t skiers. They went for the “Europe” experience. Maybe we could accomplish something like that at Quebec City. There are many ski resorts nearby including Mont Tremblant and le Massif. NOTE: Trips could possibly be done with Ski World, Parks & Rec., or other organizations. These ideas apply to the future as well. With enough interest, we can do practically anything. It’s still my goal to ski with as many members as I can. I’ll be on both western trips, so just say the word! See you on the slopes. / Steve Liberman 321-7933 [email protected] Steve Liberman is on the ball. Or under it. Judging from the crowd’s enthusiastic interaction and the length of discussion after his presentation, the topic was of great interest to our members. Here are a few notes and photos taken at the meeting. Scam artists prey on people’s fear, good will, and greed. A tip-off is when they insist on a short time span for you to provide money. Beware of callers saying they are your grandchild and waiting for you to give the grandchild’s name. Then the scammer may ask for bail money or travel money. There are similar email scams after hacking into people’s email address list (I’m stuck in another country without my wallet, but remembered your email address). Do not post birthdays on facebook, especially not with public profile. Birthday is a key element in identity theft. Scammers often ask victims to use green dot cards (anonymous, pre-paid) or money orders. Credit cards are safer than debit cards; your bank will probably not return your money if you are using a debit card Scammers use a type of phone where they buy minutes but don’t have to give their name and address, so they cannot be tracked. Verify the number given to you over the phone is the correct phone number for businesses you trust, by looking on your paperwork, in phone book etc. The phone number a con gives you could be to an accomplice. Look on Virginia Criminal Courts web page http://www.courts.state.va.us/ for contractors who have civil suits against them.
