FRIDAY April 17 2015 Issue 1104 Kids’ Anzac displays in hall Organisers of the Pohutukawa Coast Anzac commemorative centenary display have been “absolutely thrilled” by the response of local youngsters. About 100 projects created by Beachlands and Maraetai school pupils have been presented for the two day exhibition at the end of this week in the Beachlands hall as part of the lead up to Anzac day. “We are absolutely and totally thrilled by the response,” says organising committee spokesperson Barbara Kilgour. “Really we have been blown away by what the children have produced.” From large displays to dioramas and booklets, pupils have followed the brief and created unique projects either about famous New Zealanders involved in the First World War or family members who had been involved in the combat. “We have been over- Let me make selling your house a positive experience! - ONE agent - ONE result - SOLD Scott Strong 0275 330 077 Short of a drop Coolest household water in town Ph: 0508 732 843 $250 per 17,000ltr - $225 per 13,500ltr (3000gal) - $180 per 10,000ltr Jim Patrick and Barbara Kilgour with some of the Anzac Day projects on display in the Beachlands Hall, April 17-18. whelmed by the quality of their work,” says fellow organiser Jack Patrick. “It’s just fantastic.” There will also be displays from the Beachlands-Maraetai & Districts Historical Society and Red Cross along with an historical stamp display, music and poppy making. Visitors will be invited to make a poppy which will be “planted” on the grass verge outside the Beachlands Chartered Club on Anzac Day, April 25 before the annual mid-morning parade. The free commemorative display will be open this Friday, April 17 from 10am to 5pm and on Saturday, April 18 from 10am to 3pm. Barbara says the idea for the display was formulated last July. “It’s our gift to the community so they will feel part of this year’s special Gallipoli centenary,” explains Barbara. “We hope it will be an enriching experience and we encourage everyone to come along and enjoy the event.” Roadworks take tyre toll Roadworks on the main Maraetai-Whitford Rd are allegedly causing damage to tyres, according to a number of motorists. Two local service stations have also reported an increase in the number of customers with punctures in the past 10 days. Owner of Maraetai Automotive Mike Annette confirmed he had dealt with six irreparably damaged tyres in five days which he believed was attributable to the roadworks. Four of them occurred over a two day period after new metal had been allegedly laid on the roadworks site mid-week. “We had to go and rescue one woman who had just come through the roadworks and was stranded by the roadside in Beachlands her tyre went flat that quickly,” says Mike. “They are using stones that are almost small rocks which can slice right into a tyre like a knife and ruin it – we can’t repair them.” Beachlands Maraetai "Bringing water to your community for 30 years" ? Running legend Arthur Lydiard, a Beachlands resident towards the end of his life, finally gets a street named after him – kilometres away from where he actually lived. It begs the question as to whatever happened to the petition we sent the Franklin Local Board asking for Leigh Auton Reserve (at the end of the street where Arthur did live) to be named after him and not some former council bureaucrat. Never heard back on that one. Meanwhile, there are now signs of life at the Countdown end of the Jack Lachlan Drive development area. Ti Toki Lanes, the first batch of 42 sections, went on the market last weekend. This prompted me to send another email to Countdown which resulted in one of their usual vague replies, as follows: “There has been substantial interest in the new Beachlands centre and we are looking forward to the project getting underway in the final quarter of this year. “The new store and centre will not only THE EDITOR SAYS BY DUNCAN PARDON [email protected] Want to find something to keep your kids amused during what’s left of the school holidays? Here’s a suggested game...take them for a drive to see if you can find all these new streets in BeachlandsMaraetai. The street signs pictured right have gone up in the past few months and can be found in the new subdivision areas of Spinnaker Bay, Jack Lachlan Drive, Karaka Rd and Maraetai School Rd. You can also add Atalanta Way, which the Franklin Local Board signed-off on at its March meeting. Atalanta Way is named after an America’s Cup yacht, in keeping with other road names in Spinnaker Bay. (No, it’s not a spelling mistake. Atalanta is a character in Greek mythology...apparently). And if you are wondering what happened to Fifth and Sixth View Ave, well they don’t exist – presumably to avoid confusion, given that there are several roads already between Fourth and Seventh. The hideously named Artist Ave is actually an extension of Shelly Bay Rd but had to have a new name because the house numbering goes in the wrong direction. An extension would have meant re-numbeirng the entire of Shelly Bay Rd. While at the monument, the names of those inscribed are recited out loud. With the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings on April 25, the PC Times went in search of more information about the monument and the names inscribed on it. The first meeting to discuss a memorial to Clevedon’s dead from the 1914-18 war was held on August 13 1919. As a result, it was decided to purchase a triangle of land on the corner of East Rd (now Monument Rd). By various methods 957 pounds was raised to purchase the land and build the monument. It was unveiled on August 28 1921. Mrs J.A. Munro conducted the unveiling. Her son, Robert, was the first Clevedon serviceman to die in the war. Like many of his Clevedon mates, Trooper Robert William Munro served with the 3rd Auckland Mounted Rifles. He was killed in action at Gallipoli on May 19 1915 at age 21. There are 16 names on the Clevedon monument. Seven are listed as Killed in Action, four as Died of Wounds and four Died of Sickness. Others who died while serving with the Auckland Mounted Rifles were Trooper Richard Roland Jones, killed at Gallipoli on August 27 1915 and Sergeant Robert Douglas Wilson who died of wounds on the hospital ship, HMHS Sicilia, off Gallipoli on August 9 1915. Sickness was as much a killer as bombs and bullets and among those who died of illness were Rifleman Colin Campbell, of the NZ Rifle Brigade, who died in France just two days before the 1918 armistice. Private George Alexander died of influenza just days after the war ended, in the military hospital at Featherston Military Camp in the Wairarapa. Among those who died of wounds was a member of the McNicol family, Second lieutenant Duncan Bannatyne McNicol a member of the NZ Maori (Pioneer) Battalion in France August 4 1917. The 16th name on the monument is perhaps the most enigmatic. Cadet W H Williams RNTS is listed as Drowned at Sea. Cadet William Harry Williams served aboard a fleet officer training ship, Aparima, which carried up to 50 cadets. When war was declared the Apirama was requisitioned to act as a cargo ship. Cadets were teenagers and as such their parents were given the option of removing their sons from the ship as it would be operating in a war zone. Cadet Williams was one of the remaining 36 cadets who stayed on board. Seventeen of the cadets, including Cadet Williams, were among those who lost their lives when the Apirama was torpedoed by the German submarine UB40, while sailing to the Welsh port of Barry to take on coal. On Anzac Day 1952 a second memorial was dedicated to the eight Clevedon servicemen who died in World War 2. This stands in front of the 1914-18 monument. • The PC Times is grateful to the help provided for this article by Clevedon & Districts Historical Society researcher Jan Sanders. One of the first cars here today put $50 in a bucket straight away!” Mark describes the HQ Holden as iconic. “They came out from 1971-75 and were one of the big sellers for Holden – completely restyled and remodeled...I don’t think the look ever dates. “It’s the only one never raced at Bathurst, when the Toranas took over.” Kawakawa Bay’s Barry Wood, president of the General Motors Enthusiasts Club, with a 1973 Holden Belmont sedan owned by friend and fellow Bay resident Clint Tau. “Two came here today from Puhoi and said the looks they got on the motorway were amazing!” The HQ came in Belmont, Kingswood, Premier and Statesman models as well as panel vans and utes. Contractors Transfield Services responded to a query from the PC Times with this statement: “As with all road work activity, the observance of the reduced speed limits play a significant role in keeping motorists and our construction staff safe from harm and as a means of motorists protecting their vehicles from damage, particularly to tyres, windscreens and paintwork as they travel through a construction zone. “The three-month construction work on this busy stretch of road does involve temporarily altering the usual condition and usage of the road which will cause some delays. We thank motorists and local residents for their continued patience as we complete the road upgrade and stress the importance of observing the temporary 30kph speed limit and traffic management controls set in place.” Pests threaten kokako numbers Treasured kokako birds in the Hunua Ranges have suffered a blow this season with the impact of high pest numbers hindering breeding and threatening the population. Auckland Council Biodiversity Manager Rachel Kelleher says results just in from the 2014-15 breeding season are much worse than expected. “Every year we closely monitor six pairs of kokako in the Hunua Kokako Management Area (KMA) and from that monitoring we get an indication of the breeding success in the wider population. “This year’s results are dismal with no fledging success at all and, of even greater concern, signs that adult birds have been lost,” she says. Monitoring this season was expanded to observe five additional pairs that have settled outside the managed area. “The growth of the kokako population in the KMA over the last 20 years has seen birds move outside the pestcontrolled area. “Unfortunately, four of the five pairs we’ve been following outside the KMA appear to be missing altogether,” she says. The increase in pest numbers in the Hunua Ranges has prompted Auckland Council to change its approach to pest management in the wider ranges area. An aerial pest control operation using cereal baits that contain sodium fluoroacetate (1080) will be carried out in late winter. Franklin Ward Councillor, Bill Cashmore, says: “These results are heart breaking but it is reassuring to know that help is on the horizon.” Wearable wonders Three call outs in one day for emergency services Beachlands’ emergency services faced three callouts in less than 24 hours earlier this week. POHUTUKAWA COAST TIMES (April 17th 2015) 7 Clevedon police urge rural residents to secure their property Police are appealing to rural residents in the Clevedon district to report suspicious activity and vehicles. Clevedon Community Constable Tracey Cathcart says burglaries have once again been a problem in the summer months. Tracey says they are a timely reminder that residents, particularly those in the rural areas, can’t afford to be complacent. And suspicious activity must be reported. “Don’t just leave a message on my answerphone, call 111 straight away,” says Tracey. Typically thieves are targeting properties on the main roads – the East Coast Rd (Orere to Kaiaua), Clevedon Kawakawa Rd, Monument Rd and Tourist Rd. They are kicking in either the front or back door and making off with property – often taking an entire draw from a chest of drawers. Tracey says Police have had some successes and a number of arrests have been made. There have also been a spate of cars being stolen by people outside the area and then dumped. Tracey says rural property owners should take the following precautions: • Get to know your neighbours, exchange phone numbers and discuss how you may be able to help each other in an emergency. • Let neighbours know if you are going away. • If you are on a farm and are going to investigate something suspicious, let someone know where you are going and how long you expect to be. Invite a neighbour to go with you and take a mobile phone or handheld radio. • Take notice of who is out and about, especially if they aren’t locals. • Lock your house, close access gates – particularly to the driveway/house – and keep an eye on neighbouring properties. • Clearly tag animals and keep accurate stock and produce records. Lock all rural buildings, houses, sheds etc. • When padlocking gates, keep the padlock facing the inside of the property. 42 Wakelin Road, Beachlands Phone 536 4990 www.barfoot.co.nz NEW PRICE D L SO Beachlands 20 Campbell Road PRICE REDUCED!!! The teams are two of three Beachlands Maraetai AFC sides competing in the AFF over 35 Division Masters League. Their first competitive game this year saw the in-house Ian ‘Pom’ Wilson Trophy up for grabs. The Legionnaires took the lead within 20 minutes when Rod Cole hammered the ball from thirty yards, leaving the keeper little chance as it tucked neatly into the net at the far post. Ten minutes into the second-half the Lions pulled a goal back. A dangerous ball lobbed into the box connected with the head of Brian Preston, who had a great attempt on target, but it required the extra push of Barry Williams who popped up at the back post to ensure the equaliser hit the net. Goal two came in very similar circumstances. With seventy minutes gone, a low driven ball bopped around inside the six yard box. Lion Jacob Nyathi attempted to bury it, but the ball rebounded off the Legionnaires defence into the path of Williams, who again smashed the ball into the net to make it 2-1. With ten minutes left on the clock a great piece of play down the right wing saw another ball land in the Legionnaires penalty area. It was dummied by Luca Milantoni after a call from Konrad Heinemann standing just outside the six yard box. Heinemann showed excellent composure and confidence in pulling the ball down, lining up his shot, and slotting home number three, killing the game 3-1. Lion’s manager Sasha Brinker says he is delighted the trophy is staying in their Trophy cabinet. “It was quite a tense game,” says Sasha. “If the Legionnaires had managed to score a second goal it would have been different.” Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Parish Welcomes you to Mass at 5pm Saturday • Children’s Liturgy and • Sacramental programmes • Returning or New Catholics programme Beachlands Hall, 49 Wakelin Road Lions player-manager Sasha Brinker (orange) challenges Legionnaires’ Photo: Claude Therond Rex Bignell as team mates look on Heaps of prizes in fishing comp Get ready to bait your hooks! The annual Beachlands Chartered Club Fishing Competition is on again this Saturday April 18. The contest is an institution on the Pohutukawa Coast, according to a spokesman for the organising committee Shane Norton of Coastal Baits2U. “I’ve been involved for 15 years and it’s been going a lot longer than that,” says Shane, who says this year’s contest again promises some great prizes. For the first time there will be a $1000 cash prize for the average weight snapper and a total of about $8000 in prizes and spot prizes, many donated by local businesses.
