Friends of PEC,
As we transitioned from winter into spring, trail
development, mining, and shale gas were just a few of
the topics that the Pennsylvania Environmental Council
was busy addressing throughout March.
From PEC's response to the Department of
Environmental Protection's (DEP) revised rulemaking for Rep. Bill Shuster addresses an audience
natural gas activity and PEC President/CEO Davitt
at REI's Distribution Facility.
Woodwell's testimonial to DEP's Citizens Advisory
Council on the most recent five year report on the effects of underground coal mining, we
remain a leading voice in Harrisburg.
We also continued work on regional trail networks. For example, we focused our efforts to
identify and allocate funding to allow the French Creek Valley Conservancy to secure the
"Black Bridge" for future trail initiatives. Additionally, Trails Program Manager Frank Maguire
traveled to REI's Distribution Facility to meet with economic development leaders, trail
advocates, and Rep. Bill Shuster to discuss the benefits that come from trails and the need
for federal spending to support them.

Print publications ranging from Northern Ohio, to Bradford, Pa., and Northeast Pennsylvania
all ran stories featuring our work this past month. PEC's continued work in illegal dumpsite
cleanups was featured in both The Bradford Era and Wilkes‐Barre's Times Leader, while our
involvement in a potential five‐state trail system was publicized in Ohio's Twinsburg Bulletin.
Our efforts in improving Pennsylvania's energy and climate received continued publicity
through articles on gas pipeline and mining issues.
While PEC's message spread through print and online media, we also shared our vision over
the radio waves as PEC's Patrick Starr was a guest on 900 AM WURD's "The Green Hour"
segment, hosted by Jerome Shabazz. Starr outlined PEC's initiatives in energy and climate,
trail work, improving Pennsylvania's water quality, its stance on shale gas regulation, and
much more.
