CHECK AND PREPARE OPENING
• Check the rough opening for
correct size
• Rough opening should be
frame height plus ½″ and
frame width plus ½″ to ¾″
• Make sure the rough opening
is square (corners are perfect
right angles), plumb (true
vertical alignment), and level
- as shown in illustration
• String the opening to ensure
the walls are in same plane

Best Practices WRB – House wrap
Preparing an opening with Tyvek® or another suitable WRB “water resistive
barrier” for door installation
A) Make an “I-Cut” in the WRB – First, make the horizontal cuts at the top and bottom of the door
frame and then cut down the center from the top to the bottom of the opening.
B) Cut two 45 degree slits a minimum of 8” from each corner of the header to create a flap above the
rough opening to expose sheathing. Temporarily secure flap with WRB tape.
C) Fold side flaps into rough opening, cutting off excess material and secure sides with WRB tape.
NOTE: Side flaps should cover interior facing of framing studs. Refer to house wrap manufacturers
installation instructions for more details.

Best Practices – Flashing Installation
Use a flashing material to seal the WRB surface before door installation.

The use of an adhesive or flexible flashing product should be used to seal the WRB
around the rough opening.
The flashing should be applied in an overlapping manner as shown below. Start at the
bottom below the opening and then proceed up the sides. Place head flashing over
top ends of side flashing.
Install door unit following steps as recommended in installation instructions.
Once the installation is completed, install a rigid drip cap or other suitable head
flashing over the brickmold or top of unit. Unfold the top WRB flap down over the drip
cap and apply sealant to the drip cap. Cover all seams with WRB tape.
Note: Refer to flashing manufacturers installation instructions for more details.

CAULK SILL BOTTOM AND SUB-FLOOR
• Use adequate caulk to seal door
• Reduce “callbacks” due to leaks
• Consider the use of a sill pan if
the exposure is severe
• Caulk behind the brickmold to seal
against the housewrap or sheathing
• Make sure sub-floor is level and
solid

• Use Elastomeric or Polyurethane
sealant
• If sub-floor is not level shim the
sill until level

When using a sill pan only caulk the

Caulk sill pan to subfloor; lay right and left ends tightly against
rough opening.
Check center section for proper length and cut as necessary;
be sure to allow at least 2” overlap.
Liberally coat the overlapped and
recessed areas with PVC CEMENT
ONLY; clamp together to ensure good
bond; also, spread bead of caulk
along glue joints.
To prevent air infiltration, caulk lower interior edge of the sill pan.
Do not caulk the bottom of the sill to the pan.

for plumb, and square before placing initial fasteners.

• Secure lock side with
screws, do not tighten down
at this time

• Make adjustments so that
margins between door and
jamb are all even (interior

• Margin on lock & jamb side is 1/8″ top
to bottom and 1/8″ on the header as
viewed from swing side of door
• Recheck entire unit to make sure it is
plumb and square

UNCLIP & OPEN DOOR. INSTALL HARDWARE
• Remove transport clip and install 2 - #10 x
21/2” hinge screws (supplied) using a #3
Phillips bit through the hinge jamb and
into the stud to prevent sagging
• Strike plate must be anchored with 2 - #8
x 21/2” screws (supplied) using a #2
Phillips bit through the jamb and into the
stud for full protection. Shim behind
strike plate to maintain even margin
• Install lock hardware per manufacturer’s
direction. Complete jamb fastening

Pre-drilling before installing hinge and strike
screws allows for ease of installation

• For adjustable sills turn screws
to adjust threshold cap up or
down for a snug seal with the
door sweep
• Most adjustable sills have 3/8″
adjustability in the cap (#3
Phillips Head)
• For sill prepared for anchor
screws, place #10 screw
(typically for outswing sills)
through sill into sub floor
PROTIP!
When adjustable sills are properly adjusted, it should be snug and
difficult to pull a dollar bill from under the door when it is closed, but the
bill can be removed without tearing. Perform the dollar bill test at each
adjustment screw location
