2015 Penn Masters Information Packet

The Field for the 19th Annual Penn Masters Golf Championship
Binghamton, NY
April 16 – 19, 2015
It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 19th Annual Penn Masters Golf Championship! This year’s
championship will be conducted from April 16-19, 2015 in Binghamton, NY. Here are the details for what promises to be the
event of the year!
Penn Masters headquarters will be located at the Double Tree by Hilton in downtown Binghamton. This upscale
hotel has 207 spacious rooms and is located in the heart of the business district. All guest rooms feature either a view of
downtown Binghamton or the Chenango and Susquehanna Rivers. Covered parking, WiFi and use of the Riverwalk Athletic
club will be complimentary to all Penn Masters guests.
The Riverwalk Athletic Club offers state-of-the-art fitness accommodations including free weights, an exercise
machine and multiple cardio options, as well as a full-sized saltwater indoor lap pool and whirlpool spa.
Dine at the River Bistro Lounge and Restaurant...Unwind with one-of-a-kind creations, enjoy a signature cocktail, a
local beer on tap, or a glass of wine in the lounge. The hotel offers room service 6:30am to 11:00pm daily. Relax in your
guest room and still enjoy a signature dish from the Bistro.
The Double Tree by Hilton offers a deluxe breakfast buffet that will start your day off right. The buffet has
something for everyone, from made to order omelets, bacon, sausage, pancakes, fresh fruits, juices and yogurt to big & crusty
bagels, to assorted cereals, waffles & pastries. This will surely satisfy all of your primal cravings each morning!
We have secured a field of 75 participants who will compete for the Brownie Jug, as the championship begins upon
your arrival at the Links at Hiawatha Landing on Thursday afternoon April 16th, where you’ll sharpen your game during the
opening practice round, where we will have a shotgun start at 2:00 pm on this 4 ½ star Golf Digest rated gem. Play will
commence from the white tees & plays to a par of 72. Ed Brown, our defending champion, begins his quest for a record 8th
Penn Masters Golf Championship. Variety & Beauty best describe the challenge that awaits you. This links-style 18-hole
course stretches more than 6,195 yards through the scenic southern tier countryside. Ranked as the 3rd best public access
course in New York State, the Links at Hiawatha Landing is an impeccably manicured course that will humble many in this
years’ field right out of the gate. A welcome gathering with complimentary dinner and open bar from 9 – 11 pm will follow
that evening at Dillinger’s Celtic Pub & Eatery in downtown Binghamton, within walking distance of the Double Tree.
The championship begins on Friday April 17th at the spectacular Conklin Players Club with a shotgun start
beginning at 1:00 pm. We’ll be tackling this spectacular mountain course from the White Tees… which winds its way over
6,128 yards over breathtaking mountain vistas, rolling hills and large undulating greens…This breathtaking course has been
nationally recognized with a prestigious rating of 4 ½ stars by Golf Digest and provides a stiff challenge to the most
experienced golfer.
Upon completion of round #1, we will begin what promises to be an entertaining, relaxing & fun filled evening with
our Champions Dinner, located inside the Double Tree’s “Zone 225 room” a wonderful hospitality sports bar themed room
that includes dedicated bar, couches, TV’s & golf simulator. We will sit down to a fabulous NY strip dinner, Hors d’ Oeuvres
and various sides beginning at 7:30 pm, with unlimited draft beer and dessert. We will again honor Ed Brown, our defending
champion, and relive the glory that encompassed his 7th Penn Masters triumph during the’14 championship, where he blew
the entire field away winning by 14 shots. We will formally present Ed the priceless “Brownie Jug”, a tribute to our late
father, Don Brown Sr., the heart and soul of the Penn Masters. We will also recognize our heroic past champions previously
immortalized on the jug…Dick Bourassa, George Blasiak, Ted Kelly, Chuck Jaquin, Bob Chiovaro, Brian McLauchlan , John
Walkerwicz & Jerry Schiavo.
Day 2, or “Moving Day” shapes up to be another demanding test of golf, rewarding all facets of both the long & short
game, while demanding accuracy, patience & shot making. The official 2nd round begins on Saturday April 18th with a shotgun
start at 1:00 pm at the En-Joie Golf Club, Home to the PGA Tour’s BC Open from 1972 through 2006 and the Dick’s Sporting
Goods Open since 2007. Be warned that En-Joie offers a very challenging round of golf with diabolically placed sand bunkers,
strategically located water hazards and tree lined fairways. Tested by the best players in the world over the past 40 years, EnJoie offers you the opportunity to “Play Where the Pros Play”. We’ll experience this captivating layout that is always kept in
immaculate shape, from the white tees measuring 6,250 yards and plays to a par of 72. Moving Day will offer a challenging &
difficult measure of one’s driving ability, while the slick contours of the putting surfaces require the ultimate touch with the flat
stick.
“Championship Sunday” promises to separate the men from the boys, when the fields “Low 16” will again tackle the
Links at Hiawatha Landing, where the monster comes alive, and this time from the daunting championship tees measuring
7,104 yards beginning promptly at 8:30 am on Sunday, April 19th. . Hiawatha Landing boasts an impeccably manicured course
with various tree-lined holes to keep your visual senses on overload. This final round masterpiece invites you to experience
every facet of this intricate game. Those without the heart, passion and skill will crumble during this final grueling test. The
demanding finishing holes reward those who find fairways & greens, & also the mettle to handle the pressure of golf’s ultimate
prize.
Again, welcome to the event that promises to be the golf experience of a lifetime...The 19th Annual Penn Masters Golf
Championship. Print out this information packet prior to departing for Binghamton...We’ll be seeing all of you very soon!
Don Brown Jr.
Chairman
DONALD BROWN SR. 1932-2006
"Brownie" played the final 9 holes of his illustrious golfing career during the 2006 opener at
Chenango Valley State Park. He barely had the strength to stand and breathe, but competed
to the bitter end, posting a remarkable score of 68.
He then paid a brilliant tribute to his beloved nephew, Chuck Jaquin,
during the Champions dinner. He collapsed five days later, never to walk
again.
He passed away peacefully, with his family by his side on June 6th, 2006,
thirty years to the day his father, Harold Brown, passed. Everyone in this
year's field can honor him by giving it all they've got on every shot,
displaying a passion for this great game, never quitting, competing to the
bitter end, playing by the rules, and by sharing some laughs on the course
with friends both old and new. His spirit will never die. This year's
champion will get his name inscribed on the "Brownie" Jug forever, what an honor...
