Our Grade 4-7 learners will be writing their final tests of the second term in week 9 and 10. Parental
support is of great importance during this period. Consider the following two Effective Study
Strategies by Stella Cottrell, to help your child maximize his/her study strategies:
Attitudes to learning
Most people, when asked, can recount an experience that undermined their confidence in their own learning.
Negative comments when we are young can have a long-term effect upon our view of ourselves as bright,
capable learners. However, self-confidence has a major impact upon our ability to perform well.
What kind of message were you given about your abilities to study when you were at school or college?
Are these messages helpful to you now?
What attitudes would be most useful to you succeeding at your studies now?
Optimum conditions for learning
We can improve the conditions for learning by being aware of some of the ways the brain works. Although we
do not need to know a great deal about the brain, understanding some basics can help us to make the most
of our minds. Some of the optimal conditions for learning are common sense and good for our general health.
For example, the brain works well when:

it is rested - sleep affects our performance.

it is hydrated - drinking water helps the electrical connections of the brain.

it is unstressed - when it is stressed, it can focus only on 'escape', not on such matters as reading journals
and writing assignments.

it enjoys itself - it is important to look for any angle that can stimulate our interest in what we are
learning. Sometimes this can take imagination if the subject itself seems boring.

it has seen something several times - little and often works better than trying to understand something in
one sitting.

Month for May. Brandon is the Best Player of the Season

Mr Bester resigned on 31 May with immediate effect.
Our way forward – Ms Colleen Newham will teach

and Ms Marinda de Bruin will be teaching English to our
Grade 6 and 7 learners. We thank these teachers for

LIBRARY NOTICE
Our Grade 1 learners are now allowed to take out (borrow) library books. Please take note that lost
or damaged books will need to be paid for. Late books after the due date will incur a R1.00 per day
fine payable in the library. Parents are asked to encourage learners to read more at home.
DEBATING
The debating team competed against PEMPS on Wednesday 20 May. The topic was Technology: A
negative impact on a child's development. PEPPS opposed the topic but unfortunately, PEMPS won
the debate, however, the debating team is going from strength to strength and working well as a
team. Thank you to the debaters for putting in such a good effort.

STORYTELLING
The English Department's annual hosting of the Storytelling evening was a testament to how well
education can work when all three the "corners" of the "triangle" work as a team. Staff worked hard
to provide guidance and assistance. Parents worked hard, motivating and supporting their children
throughout the preparation process and the children outdid themselves with their stories on the
evening.
The audience heard about Charlie and Lola and how poor Charlie had to struggle to get a whale
down the tub hole; a gigantic turnip and a rather exasperated farming family who will probably not
be planting turnips again next year! They heard about grandparents being, unceremoniously, stuffed
into baskets and ghost stories that turned their blood cold!
It was an evening that that showcased the talent and the grit of our learners in their development as
public speakers and it was truly special to see our learners' stories shine brightly among those of the
visiting schools, Mitchell House and PEMPS.
A hearty congratulations to everyone involved in making Storytelling such a special evening.

DRAMA CLUB -JUNIOR
Ponder on…
“Success is no accident. It is hard
work, perseverance, learning,
studying, sacrifice and most of all,
love of what you are doing.”

After weeks of a lot of hard work, determination and
overcoming challenges which seemed incredibly difficult to
overcome, we proved ourselves wrong by stepping up our
game and moving our concert to a venue that could allow
friends and family to witness our Junior Drama Club’s talent
first hand. Although we faced challenges through the night,
the children's ability to win the audience’s hearts outweighed
these challenges, which in the end turned out to be a
successful and memorable evening.
Mrs Horak’s husband said the following later that evening, "I enjoyed it a lot because it made me
realise that life shouldn't always be taken so seriously, thinking of all the responsibilities I have at work,
and even though there were challenges with the sound, the children still enjoyed themselves." We
should definitely take a moment to think about those words and know that we do it for the learners’
enjoyment.
We would like to thank the following parents who contributed to the success of the evening:
Mrs Erika Mengouchi for assisting in the making of the costumes, Miss Shakila Hassim (Mohamed) for
assisting with makeup and backstage support, Oos Skool for the venue, and a thank you to
everyone who supported us by coming to watch the concert.

DRAMA CLUB – SENIOR
Our Senior Drama Club presented their play to our parents and staff on 21 May 2015 in the Oos Skool
hall. A huge amount of time and effort went into practising the play and it paid off, as the evening
was a great success. The learners really enjoyed playing their roles in the drama ‘Long, long ago
Cinderella’. It is a modern tale about Cinderella; i-Pads, phones, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
were part of this modern version.
We are really looking forward to the drama sessions in the third term. We will be focusing on
Eisteddfod items only, so as to prepare our learners for the Eisteddfod in September.

BIG WALK
Congratulations to our Parents Association for once again planning and
running a successful Big Walk. Your efforts are appreciated! It was such an
enjoyable day!

Reading Corner
Recommended book for single moms (or dads) to read!
Are you stressed out and overwhelmed? Do you need to
organised? Whether you are a single, working or stay at
home mom, we all need help sometimes because being a
mom is both rewarding and challenging. There are 5 areas
a mom must get organised to stay sane: mom, family, diet,
homework and finances. By getting control over these 5
areas a mom can become more effective and get things
done quickly so that she can have more me-time and enjoy
more quality time with her family.
You will learn:
How to get organised so that you can have more ‘metime’. At times, it seems impossible to get a minute to
yourself but you can organise your life in such a way that
you can have time to yourself.
Learn strategies to increase your child’s learning, boost your
child’s confidence and make homework easier.
Homework can be very frustrating and hard to explain. Teach your child skills which will help learn
things easier and develop their critical thinking skills. These tools will help them even in college.
Why it is important to create family goals and how to put them in action.
Spend 1 hour in the kitchen and eat healthy all week. With obesity becoming a major problem, it is
important to keep healthy food on hand. Design a schedule so that you can achieve this.
Know the true value of money.
