DESCRIPTION
This S.T.A.B.L.E. refresher course is directed
toward those who are very familiar with the
information in the S.T.A.B.L.E. program but
would like to obtain a certificate indicating they
have refreshed the information within the last
two years. It is NOT recommended for staff
who have had only rare experiences with
newborns who need intensive care immediately
after birth. S.T.A.B.L.E. is a commercially
available program for nursing, medical, and
respiratory care staff. This program
complements the Neonatal Resuscitation
Program (aap.org). General information about
the S.T.A.B.L.E. program can be found at
www.stableprogram.org.
A pretest will be e-mailed to you for completion
prior to the program. Post tests for each session,
completed as a group, are part of the program.
Those who successfully complete the program
will be e-mailed an official card provided by the
S.T.A.B.L.E. program.
Only participants who work in a NICU or have
completed the full STABLE program at least
twice should consider attending this refresher
course.

Note: As for any conference, please dress in
layers and include a warm outer garment.

CREDITS
Mercy (OH-043/06-01-16) is an approved provider of
continuing nursing education by the Ohio Nurses
Association (OBN-001-91), an accredited approver
by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s
Commission on Accreditation.
To receive 4.5 hours of continuing education credit
learners must attend at least 80% of the program,
pass the post test, and complete and return the
evaluation form at the end of the program.

REGISTRATION
It is not required that each participant have a
textbook, however, the handouts for the class are
located in the course Learner’s Manual, which is
now an updated 6th edition. To obtain the
textbook, go to http://www.stableprogram.org.
The cost is $44.95 plus shipping.
A pretest will be e-mailed to you prior to the
conference. Bring it with you to the conference.
You will also need a calculator.
For staff of Consortium member hospitals, the
course fee is $15 if registered before April 9 and
$20 after. The fee includes continuing education
credit and coffee/water. The fee DOES NOT
INCLUDE the required textbook which you
must purchase or locate a loaner on your
own.

0900 Sugar and safe care: Infants at risk to
develop hypoglycemia, signs and symptoms if
hypoglycemia, initial IV therapy for sick
newborns, IV glucose treatment of
hypoglycemia, blood glucose evaluation
following treatment, indications for use of
umbilical catheters, principles for safe use of
umbilical catheters. Objectives: Define key
elements of the S.T.A.B.L.E. program. .
Recognize signs and symptoms of
hypoglycemia and treatment modalities.
1200 Blood Pressure: Causes, presentation,
and initial treatment of hypovolemic,
cardiogenic and septic shock, physical findings
and lab tests to help recognize and evaluate
shock in the newborn, indications for and safe
administration of Dopamine. Objective: Review
the treatment for shock in the newborn.
Temperature: Infants at increased risk for heat
loss, ways infants lose body heat, detrimental
effects of cold stress, precautions to observe
when rewarming severely hypothermic infants.
Objective: Describe how to prevent and treat
cold stress.

1020 Airway: Evaluation of respiratory
distress, indications for respiratory support,
blood gas evaluation, initial ventilator
parameters, chest x-ray interpretation, emergent
evacuation of a pneumothorax.
Objective: Identify interventions for
respiratory distress in the newborn.
