Recruited to the OPS several years ago, Ms. Clarke Julien worked in the areas of policy and project/change management including strategic roles in property tax and municipal finance reform; the Policy Innovation and Leadership initiative that focused on building policy capacity throughout the Ontario Public Service (OPS); key initiatives such as the City of Toronto Act, the Smart Growth Plan and Seaton Exchange dispute; and people change management for one of the largest I&IT projects looking at Ontario’s tax services. In addition to her policy and change management background, her career has also focused on training, facilitation, communications and strategic planning in the public service, not-for-profit and private sectors. With her post-secondary education in political science, international relations, and communications, Cordelia has worked both in the public and private sectors where she developed her expertise in the various fields. Ms. Clarke Julien has designations in project management and public relations, she holds an Honours BA in Political Science and Mass Communications from York University and a Master’s Degree in International Relations and Public Administration from McMaster University. Cordelia’s presentation will provide an update on major initiatives underway in the Ministry of Labour’s Prevention Office, including Mandatory Entry Level Construction Training, Working at Heights Training Standards and Mandatory Basic Occupational Health and Safety Awareness Training. Marni Tivy Ministry of Labour Health and Safety Policy Regulatory Updates Marni is a Senior Policy Advisor with the Ministry of Labour’s Health and Safety Policy Branch. She has extensive work experience in the area of occupational health and safety policy and regulation development as well as practical experience in the application of the legislation. Marni began her career with the Ministry as an Industrial Health and Safety Inspector and has worked on a wide variety of health and safety projects during her career with the Ministry. She is the lead advisor on the Ministry’s recent consultations on proposed changes to occupational exposure limits, new construction occupational health initiatives and the Ministry’s all-sector regulatory proposal with respect to noise. Marni holds a Masters of Engineering from the University of Toronto and a Bachelor of Science from Queen’s University. The Ministry of Labour is proposing to strength health and safety of workers with some new regulatory proposals. For example one proposal will address exposure to noise, biological and chemical agents and carbon monoxide release from internal combustion engines in the construction sector. Building on the Ministry's proposal to introduce noise requirements for construction workers, this package proposes to further extend noise protection requirements to all remaining Ontario workplaces, under the OHSA that are not covered by the Industrial, Oil and GasOffshore and Mining Plants regulations. Stacy Richardson, CRSP Foreign Body in Eye Stacy has been working at 3M Canada for over 15 years holding a number of technical positions of increasing responsibility over the years. She currently supports several Personal Protective Products including safety eyewear, safety coveralls, fall protection and head protection. She is currently the president of the London local chapter of the CSSE, is involved in the Threads of Life and Steps for Life. She is also a voting member of CSA Z94.4 Selection, Use and Care of Respirators. Stacy is a graduate of the Lambton College Industrial Hygiene Technology program and is currently finishing her BSc. Foreign bodies in the eye can be disabling, painful and totally preventable. It’s important to take care of our eyes and ensure that our vision lasts a lifetime. Stacy will review the most common types of eye injuries, explore why these occur and show some recommended practices and eyewear that can reduce or eliminate eye injuries in many cases. Mary Falconer Update and Prevention Around Three Biohazards for Outdoor Workers, Mosquitoes, Ticks and Giant Hogweed Mary has been a Registered Nurse since 1980 with a certification in Occupational Health Nursing as of 2005. Mary has been with the Occupational Health Clinics for Ontario Workers since 2001 as a part-time occupational health nurse. Beginning in the spring of 2011 she began work throughout Southwestern Ontario providing Health at Work presentations for migrant farm workers, seasonal workers and students working on farms. The biohazard presentation will begin with what West Nile Virus is, how it spreads, who is at risk, symptoms, protection from mosquitoes and reducing mosquito populations. The second segment of presentation will address tick bites and Lyme Disease in Ontario. Covering what Lyme disease is, how to prevent tick bites when working outdoors, how to remove a tick, recognizing blacklegged ticks, when to see your doctor, and how is Lyme disease treated. The third and final segment will help you recognize Giant Hogweed and understand its serious health hazards, and what to do if exposed. Emily Murphy Emily is a post-graduate student of Western University in the Occupational Health and Safety Management program. Emily has a B.A Honours in Kinesiology and P.E. from Wilfrid Laurier University. Emily is completing her internship at Municipality of Chatham-Kent by August 2015. Vaccination have been around for a long time and most people have received a vaccination at one or more points in their life. However, this has usually been somewhat of a personal choice. Recently some companies and institutions have made being vaccinated for certain biological agents mandatory. This presentation will look at both the pros and cons of instituting a mandatory vaccination policy as well as the worker’s rights. Jillian Spruce Jillian is a post-graduate student of Western University in the Occupational Health and Safety Management program. Jillian has an undergraduate degree in Political Science from Brock University. Jillian is completing her internship at Federal White Cement by August 2015. As the average age of the workforce increases there are a number of challenges and advantages that need to be addressed from a Health and Safety standpoint. Jillian will be speaking about the Greying Workforce and the special considerations that should be part of a robust health and safety program. Marc Cousineau, CIH, ROH Marc began his career at INCO Ltd in Sudbury at the Iron Ore Recovery Plant in Environmental Control. He assisted in the commissioning and operation of INCO's powder metallurgy rolling mill producing alloys for coinage. During these years his responsibilities increased as he accepted positions in industrial hygiene, operations and health and safety management. Marc joined a health and safety organization as a consultant conducting audits of safety programs, providing seminars on health and safety elements and conducting industrial hygiene investigations in Eastern and Northern Ontario. He was promoted to Senior Technical Consultant, Area Supervisor and finally assuming regional manager responsibilities. In 2000, Marc joined the Ontario Ministry of Labour as part of the occupational exposure limits initiative and has worked as an Industrial Hygienist in Northern, Eastern and Central Regions covering the industrial, construction, health care and mining sectors. He also had secondments as District Manager in Northern and Eastern Regions. As of January 2013, he was promoted to the position of Provincial Hygienist. As the provincial hygiene program lead of the Ministry of Labour, Marc provides leadership in strategic planning and delivery of occupational hygiene services in Ontario. His portfolio includes industrial hygiene aspects of the sector regulations, occupational exposure limits, designated substances, WHMIS, GHS preparations, industry-wide air quality surveys and developing occupational hygiene work plans consistent with the Ministry Safe at Work Ontario's objectives. WHMIS and GHS Update The Ministry of Labour is proposing to amend selected provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) that set out duties related to the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), and to amend certain requirements in the WHMIS Regulation made under the OHSA. The proposed amendments are part of a broader national and international initiative to implement a world-wide system of classifying and providing information about hazardous workplace chemicals, known as the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). A number of jurisdictions are in the process of implementing the GHS, including the United States, Australia, New Zealand, the European Union, China, Japan and South Korea. This is your opportunity to learn about amendments to WHMIS and the OHSA and how they will affect you. In addition, you will have the opportunity to get answers to questions and issues of most concern to you.
