April 6, 2015
Aloha Class of 2019!
We are looking forward to meeting each of you on Monday, August 17, 2015! The Daniel K. Inouye
College of Pharmacy (DKICP) P1 Orientation will begin at 8:30am at 722 S. A’ohoku Street (across
from the ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center). Registration will be in the building marked “Student Services &
Academic Affairs.” A campus map is attached.
ORIENTATION INFORMATION
You will receive your complete orientation schedule when you arrive on August 17th, however, to be
prepared please review the following information.
Mandatory First Year Pharmacy Student Orientation is all week: Monday, August 17th through
Thursday, August 20th. Although there will be free time built into the schedule, plan to be at orientation
from 8:00am - 5:00pm each day. The orientation program is for students only (not for family members)
however, there is an event your family members/significant other may attend with you:
Dean’s Welcome Reception: Monday, August 17, 2015 at 5:00pm. As the date approaches, an
official invitation will be sent via email to ask for your RSVP.
Professional attire will be required throughout the week. On Thursday, August 20, 2015 you will have
your picture taken with a white coat (coat will be provided). Men should wear a button down shirt and a
tie is recommended. Women should wear a dressy blouse/button down shirt or an appropriate dress. To
get an idea of what the pictures will look like, you may view our Ambassadors’ photos at
http://pharmacy.uhh.hawaii.edu/prospectivestudents/ambassadors.php.
During the first morning of orientation we will collect $16 from you for Professional Liability Insurance.
Please bring exact cash with you.
LAPTOPS
It is highly recommended that all students in the Class of 2019 purchase a laptop computer for use
during their four years of study in the PharmD program. Additionally, UHH-DKICP uses ExamSoft
(electronic testing software) and a laptop meeting the specifications below will be necessary for you to
be able to sit for your exams. (If you already own a laptop with these minimum specifications there is no
need to purchase a new one).
Please note:
• SofTest cannot be used on virtual operating systems such as Microsoft's Virtual Machine,
Parallels, VMware, VMware Fusion or any other virtual environments.
• The DKICP licensed version of ExamSoft will not operate on MAC tablets.
• ExamSoft does not support Tablet or Convertible devices other than Surface Pro 1, 2 & 3.

If you would like to purchase a computer or software from the UH Hilo Bookstore please visit:
http://www.uhbooks.hawaii.edu/computers/lists.asp. If they do not have what you need in stock, they
will order for you from the UH Manoa bookstore.
We highly recommend that you purchase your laptop before coming to Hilo in August. Purchasing from
the bookstore may be delayed by weeks or months.
Please note: It is your responsibility to maintain your computer; UHH DKICP does not provide
hardware or software technical support for student computers. You might want to consider an
extended warranty which covers you while you are a student in the program. Additionally, should
you be receiving financial aid, financial aid will be allocated upon request to cover the cost of one
computer during your four year program.

TEXTBOOKS
To view the required/recommended books for the courses above, you may visit the UH Hilo Bookstore’s
website: http://www.bookstore.hawaii.edu/HILO/SelectTermDept.aspx
REGISTRATION
Early registration for classes will begin on Sunday, April 19, 2015 at 12:00am. (Do not register for
PHPP 528. You will be assigned a class time for PHPP 528 and our office will register you for this
specific course.) If registering between April 6, 2015 and July 24, 2015, payment must be received by
4:00pm on July 24th otherwise your registration may be cancelled. If you were awarded financial aid,
you will not have your classes cancelled. Please note that you will proceed through your classes as a
cohort and therefore there is no competition for a seat in the classes.
TUITION PAYMENT
The deadline for tuition will depend when you register for classes and also if you are receiving financial
aid through UH Hilo. After registering for classes, you will be able to pay for your tuition online with
either a Visa or MasterCard. You may choose to pay with a check, money order or cash at the Cashier
Office. An installment payment plan is also available
(http://hilo.hawaii.edu/uhh/bo/cashier/InstallmentPaymentPlan.php). Please mark your calendars with
the respective payment deadlines as no letter or notice will be sent to you. If you are receiving financial
aid, your financial aid award will be applied to your tuition before the final deadline, September 14,
2015. Funds received in excess of institutional charges will be refunded to you. You will receive a
refund check at the mailing address currently on file with the university. To eliminate mailing time, you
may request that the refund be sent directly to your bank account. You may sign up for eRefunds via the
MyUH portal from https://myuh.hawaii.edu/cp/home/displaylogin. You are strongly encouraged to
participate in eRefunds.
HOUSING
If you are still looking for housing be sure to visit the off-campus housing website:
http://www.uhh.hawaii.edu/housing/offcampus/ and the DKICP Class of 2019’s Facebook page:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/722035484498453/. The DKICP Facebook page is a great way to get
in touch with other classmates especially if you are looking for a housemate. As housing ads come to
our office, we will post it online. Please note that we do not endorse any realtor, individuals, or
dwellings.
TRANSPORTATION/PARKING
Having reliable transportation is important. Hilo does not offer a public transport system that can get
you to your rotation sites and back. Most students have a car or moped to get themselves
around. Shipping cars is possible (cost is around $1000-$1500 from the mainland). Students also
Page 4 of 5
purchase cars once they arrive. In addition to car dealerships, listings may be found at Hawaii Tribune
Herald’s classifieds or Craigslist. UH Hilo parking permits for parking lots are available on a firstcome, first-served basis after registering for classes. A parking permit is not necessary as there is
ample free parking along A’ohoku Street.
CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK
As stated in the medical matriculation
letter (http://pharmacy.uhh.hawaii.edu/currentstudents/documents/firstyear/Letter2019.pdf) you will
need to report to Hilo Medical Center for both a criminal background check and a drug
screening. Please do not contact them. An HMC representative will contact each of you based on
your indicated arrival date and when they are ready to schedule these appointments. This will happen
once you are physically on island and may occur during orientation week or early in the Fall semester.
Please do not try to change or adjust your appointment time unless there is a serious emergency. Hilo
Medical Center is very busy and they need to process 80-90 students. We appreciate your willingness to
adapt to the schedule they provide.
CHANGE OF CONTACT INFORMATION
Please update your contact information including email, phone numbers, and mailing address on MyUH.
To change your mailing address please visit: https://myuh.hawaii.edu/cp/home/displaylogin. Enter your

Safety Considerations





You can help Campus Security help you by exercising
these common sense precautions:
Report any suspicious persons or activities; report all
incidents no matter how minor; report losses
immediately.
Be sure to lock and secure all windows and doors;
lock your cars and bikes; store valuables in the trunk.
Never loan keys to anyone (they are easily lost,
stolen, or duplicated).
Mark or engrave your belongings; don't leave
belongings and valuables unattended for any amount
of time
At night, travel and park in lighted areas; travel in
pairs if possible; be aware of your surroundings.
Emergency Call Boxes and Blue Light Phones
The University has dispersed throughout the campus
(yellow) emergency call boxes and blue light telephones for
student and faculty use in the event of an emergency and/or
the need for assistance.
Utilizing the emergency phone requires depressing the red
button on the call box and this will place a call directly to
Campus Security. The location of the call will be
ascertained and the nature of the emergency or assistance
will be addressed immediately.
Campus Security Escort Program
The University of Hawaii at Hilo offers the Escort Program
seven days a week between the hours of 6:30pm and
11:30pm. The Program is available to ensure the safety of
individual students, faculty and staff members. If someone
feels uncomfortable about walking across the University
Campus for any reason, they may contact the Security
Department at (974-7911) and they will be escorted to
their requested on-campus destination

DKICP students are encouraged to use the UHH Library or study
from home.
DKICP students may study 24 hours a day, seven days a week in the
breakout rooms and/or the LPLH student lounge. However, the
outside doors will be locked after business hours and access will
only be granted through key access! Students may open the outside
doors to let another student in however, students are NOT
permitted to place wastebaskets in the doorways or contrive any
other device or method for keeping the door open. For your
safety and the safety of other students do not let anyone into the

personally. Do not let anyone in the building even if they say they
are a DKICP student but you are not familiar with them. Students,

member from the class to whom the room is assigned arrives please
either vacate the room or ask permission to stay.
All students must clean up after themselves, throw trash in proper
receptacles outside, and clean up spills appropriately. The last person to
leave a room is required to lock the windows and turn off the lights.

DKICP Modular Room Use Policy

The Office of Student Services will maintain a schedule for the break out
rooms and the modular classrooms. These reservations supersede study
hours. Student officer meetings, student organization meetings, special
events, student interviews, and faculty requests will be accepted for
reservations. Please note: reservations by students for study or group projects will
not be accepted. Reservations for the breakout rooms or the classrooms can be
made by emailing the designated Office of Student Services staff member or
[email protected] at least 24 hours in advance.

Students are required to be professional and exhibit behavior which
is appropriate for an academic study environment. Any activities
which take place in the modular break out rooms which are
deemed unprofessional and inappropriate will compromise the use
of the Modular Campus for ALL of the students in the DKICP. Any
infraction to the above rules will result in the removal of key
privileges. Please maintain a safe and appropriate study
environment for yourself and all of your classmates.

Students are expected to report any infraction of this policy and they may use
any one of the following channels: Inform their Class Liaisons, inform the
Office of Student Services or inform Dr. Fisher ([email protected]). All
