What s ort of w would Mr. Ol ood liva select f or your nder wand? What sort of wood would Mr. Ollivander select for your wand? While much of the Harry Potter series concerns Harry’s extraordinary magical abilities and his uniqueness as “the Chosen One,” his creator, J. K. Rowling, makes very clear that Harry’s truly remarkable abilities involve choices and decisions available to all of us: how we treat our friends and family, how we manage human differences, how we deal with fear, and how we confront our own mortality and the mortality of those closest to us. As the wise mentor Albus Dumbledore reminds The Boy Who Lived, “It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.” Through examination of what the Sorting Hat would do with us and how we would cope in the Hogwarts environment, participants will explore our own wizardry. ABOUT THE FACILITATOR... Lana A. Whited is editor of The Ivory Tower and Harry Potter: Perspectives on a Literary Phenomenon (Missouri, 2002) and co-editor, with M. Katherine Grimes, of Critical Insights: Harry Potter (Salem Press, 2015). She is currently working on a Critical Insights volume on the Hunger Games series. Dr. Whited is professor of English and director of the Boone Honors Program at Ferrum College in Virginia (USA). She earned degrees at Emory & Henry College (B.A.), The College of William & Mary (M.A.), Hollins College (M.A.), and The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (Ph.D.). Begun in the fall of 2014, Saturdays @ Phoebe Needles are seminar programs designed to discuss everyday practical life issues from a faith perspective. In addition to a presentation from each speaker, there will be questions and conversation, lunch, and time for Christian fellowship, all in the beautiful surroundings of the Phoebe Needles Center. You are invited to arrive beginning at 9:30 a.m. for coffee and refreshments. The program will begin at 10:00 a.m., lunch will be served at Noon, and the seminar will conclude by 3:00 p.m. The cost of each program including lunch is $25.00. The programs focus on the practice of faith. Where is the living God today in the midst of these issues and in our lives? How does our faith influence our understanding and actions? Each presenter is well qualified and sensitive to how our faith in God comes to bear on how we think and respond to the decisions we face each day. Advance registration is required (on or before Noon on the Monday before each program). You may pay online using PayPal, or mail a check in advance of the program along with your registration.
